New Super Mario Bros. 2 |OT| Coins!

I'm a few games behind on the 3DS (currently playing through MK7) and I haven't picked this up yet.

Is there any advantage to purchasing this either in physical form or as a digital download?

I recently got a 3DSXL and when I did a system transfer I noticed for the first time that the SD card I transferred over is only 2 gigs.

That Bullet Bill stage is my undoing. I've got 14,194 because I can only manage the lower route. I really wish I could just repeatedly practice that upper route, haha. Also, I got a few extra coins on the second stage without losing my koopa-combo by doing four wall jumps instead of two and firing off a golden fireball into the podoboo trio after I clomp the koopa troopa.

I've played these stages more than the rest of the game.

I started doing that as well, did it in my 15.5k run

Edit; though i didn't hit the podobos, but I've been wanting too.

I want to try the new levels, but I think it's kinda bullshit that the bundled price is exactly the same as purchasing the packs separately. What's the point of a bundle then? Only having to click one button to purchse instead of three? Whooptydoo. Given that I'm still getting a lot of play out of coin rush/street pass I think I'll wait until Nintendo does some sort of promotion on the DLC. They've still got some work to do when it comes to incentives.

I'd only get the second two anyway, the first is pointless for competition.

Excellent; just used the koopa stair trick for the one koopa troopa on the first stage and then continued with a decent enough run through the second stage but stuck with the lower run for the third to be safe and got a new high score of 22,692 coins. Once I learn to properly play the upper level of the third stage I'll definitely beat that. I don't think 30,000 is possible though... surely not? Hm.

Koopa on what stair? On the nerve wrack pack? even if the koopa trick is possible on a stair, you have so little time from the p-switch that more than a couple jumps isn't possible. I echo Chopper's sentiments, video or it Didn't happen!

Edit: It's all bricks in that stage, koopa trick wouldn't even work...

The only Koopa in the stage. Get to him before hitting the final p switch (timer should still be ticking for the previous one) and kick him off the stair bricks, leaving them intact. Jump up to the platform on the left and fire a gold fireball at the stairs to turn them into coins and runjump left to safety as the timer runs out. The stairs you turned to coins will now be bricks. don't hit the P switch. wait for the music to Bah Bah and jump right. The Koopa will be dancing on the stairs giving you time to position yourself at the foot of them for the jumpin' and the coins. Once it expires just hit the switch and run to the flag. You can finish the first stage with about 4k this way.

I didn't think you could do the trick on breakable bricks either, but search the stage Mushroom-1 lives trick: those are breakable bricks too.

Happy Coin Huntin'!

Didn't go to bed. Couldn't let it lie. I managed to pull it off twice, but BOTH times, I immediately jumped to my death.

Thanks for posting that dude. I fully expect you to report back with 30,000 coins at some point.

This Nerve Wrack pack about alone is responsible for about 500,000 of my 1,500,000 coins. Considering I cheesed 3-4 for my million, that's fucking awesome value for money.

It's simply a case of price vs. convenience. There are absolutely no gameplay implications.

If it's the sort of game you're gonna want in your 3DS at all times, even when new titles come out, go for it. You, however, appear to play one game at a time so...

Got my Nerve Wrack Pack score up to 23,588 coins. Managed the top route on the last stage but missed the final star coin. Obsessed.

Congratulations! I've managed the trick now and will be coming for the top spot again :)

Edit: Nailed a good run finally! 23,856. Missed the third star coin but still happy with this run. Can rest til someone here beats me.

Stage 1: 3,900ish
Stage 2: 10,700ish
Stage 3: 23,856

First run completed before this was 23,500 something, but was lower than the other posted.

Excellent. I was almost content to settle with the score I had and maybe play some picross e today instead. It looks like it's Nerve Wrack Pack obsessing all over again, haha. I don't think I'll beat you, but I know I'll spend a lot of time trying!

I missed the podoboo trio on my run. I bet if I get those I can improve my score. Also, I think it might well be possible to hit all of them, every podoboo in the level, because they seem to be deliberately timed that way.

Will QA for food.
Surprised to see how many Gold Rush packs I've gotten from StreetPass. Out of the 15 NSMB2 passes last week, half were Gold Rush and half were Mushroom.

Why not just create a proper new world for us to download and play through instead of this stupid Coin Rush DLC trickle? Why do we suddenly give a fuck about time trials and millions of coins and score attacks? Mario has never been about that. I want levels I can play through at my own pace, with secret areas and lots of things to discover, with several exists and a connected world map. Why does the DLC have to focus on this completely inane, reductive aspect of the game?

They're learning how these things work at a very slow pace. Hopefully it'll improve in future titles..

Totally agreed. I like the look of some of the levels, but have no interest in coin rush.

And then people complain that Mario is the same thing every time. When they do something that's actually new, others dismiss it as a trite gimmick and assert they should just make the same thing they always have.

In point of fact a lot of people have dug coin rush and gotten into it big time. It's only the alpha of the concept and it could use some tweaks. It could use more of a competitive leaderboard system - but then, now we know Miiverse is coming to 3DS, and perhaps the bigger games will get updated to use it. And/or future games will be able to leverage it for modes like coin rush.

And really "we" is more than one view; plenty of people love score attack games, and there are entire subcultures devoted to performing and perfecting Mario speed runs, trick plays, and expert level attacks. Coin rush isn't random and out of the blue. Nintendo knew about the people who liked to play Mario this way - they began recognizing it with the master play videos in NSMB Wii. To me it's pretty obvious that modes like coin rush were thought up to throw players like that a bone.

I can understand the frustration with the lack of new world themes, but I don't understand the shit talking about coin rush mode at all. I thought it would be a useless gimmick, but as it turns out it's probably the best addition the NSMB games have offered so far. All told I've spent as much time with coin rush as I spent playing NSMB or NSMB Wii in their entirety, or close to it. It shows a different dimension to the level design that adds much more depth than just playing through and beating the game normally. The perfectionist speed running aspects and the organic competition of street passes add a lot of replayability imo. If the levels weren't so tightly designed for speed running it could have been a bust, but as it turns out they're actually damn good.

Anyway, I think this game is getting criminally underrated and paying for the sins of its predecessors. Yet another NSMB was the last thing I was begging for, but personally I find this one more fulfilling than NSMB Wii, which was already light years better than NSMB DS, aka turd of the franchise. It's kinda frustrating that this is the game in the series that everyone seems to be piling on. For me, it's the first one that truly "feels" right.

You're conflating two completely separate conversations, dude. People complain that NSMB rehashes the same environments, graphics, music, etc... but very few, if anyone, want it to be anything other than a traditional side-scroller.

It's always compared to mario galaxy and its inventivity.

I wouldn't pay for extra 2D Mario worlds. Thats all about the whole experience; Coin Rush allows a lot more replayability and am really happy with the support.

Did rubbish on my first go of B but its a decent rush I suppose; not as good as A though and I found it easier.

The Golden Mushroom pack is really fun, but quite easy to max at 30,000. Perhaps the most challenging part is getting the flagpole in the second and third stages, as you get very little room to long jump, but finding as many Golden Mushroom as possible is pretty fun to try out.

The Coin Hunt pack has better designed levels. The first one is a Ghost House, which can be quite tricky due to one particular hidden door. Second level is more fun, and makes good use of chain-jumping and golden rings. The last is a pretty challenging level.

All in all, new DLC is not bad. I liked it.

Nah, people trash NSMB all around. The art style is just the strawman used to kick off the festivities. They trash it for being 2D (sometimes literally saying 3D Mario are the main games now). They trash it for playing exactly the same. They trash it for having no "ideas". And as someone said, they trash it for not being as inventive as Galaxy.

Coin Rush, meanwhile, is pure 2D platforming. Just with a different meta game, shows the potential for evolving a lot of new game modes in future titles. NSMB U does seem to springboard off with with like 3 different rush-derived modes.

Oh, about the new DLC:

The spotpass notice says you can now upload your score to leaderboards on the website. On the site the Coin Rush section actually shows a screenshot of leaderboards and says they'll be updated daily. It looks like that part of the site isn't live yet, unless I'm missing the link to the leaderboards.

You're trying to create a point where there isn't one. Again: very, very few people, if any, actually complain about the games being traditional side-scrollers. To suggest that 'oh, they're given coin rush which should address their complaints and then people are still unhappy' is complete nonsense, but, with all due respect, this isn't the first time you've whined about people's criticisms and reduced their arguments to straw men.

The comments that spawned my remark in the first place was someone asking why they even bothered making new ways to play the game because supposedly nobody wanted new ways to play.

The bolded part is as much a straw man as anything. My entire point wasn't that adding coin rush should address every complaint ever about NSMB. It's the irony that something new isn't appreciated by many, yet so many ask for something new.

And it's not that people complain about the basic fact that NSMB is a side scrolling platformer. There seem to be plenty of complaints floating around unrelated to its visuals about how it's recycled junk and boring as a 2d platformer. Specifically pointing to X other game that is supposedly far better designed because it's, well, not NSMB. Like Rayman Origins.

NSMB2 feels like the result of what happens when a no-name company attempts to make a 2D platformer. Dull, uninspired, crappy. SML3D feels like what happens when Nintendo actually tries.

A little too much hyperbole there. If a no-name company made a 2D platformer as good as NSMB2 it would be GAF's indie darling. Nothing wrong with holding Nintendo to higher standard given their track record though.

An exchange from the 3D Land v. NSMB 2 thread a few days ago that's relevant to what's going on in here I think. It's pretty obvious to me the strengths of NSMB 2 (e.g. the excellent level design and Coin Rush mode) get unfairly dismissed just because it shares the same aesthetic style as prior NSMB games. Its biggest sin for many people is simply being an NSMB game.

This is absolutely, positively, infuriatingly true.

To be honest, this isn't even a NSMB2 thing - many people merely used NSMB2s 'recycled' graphics as the clinching final proof that New Super Mario Bros was crappy and Nintendo hates us for not making every single Mario-branded game like Galaxy.

Some who don't like it stated that way may claim I'm oversimplifying it. But really? I was there for NSMB Wii. There was a shitstorm of hate for NSMB Wii before it launched, with plenty of plenty (on GAF, off GAF) laughing at its "cheap flash graphics", and the fact that it looks so dull, old fashioned, and boring. Some people were calling it shit because Splosion Man was "much better and only ten bucks".

This was before the game actually came out and sold tens of millions of copies, ah-heh. After THAT point I seem to recall many of the popular narratives shifted to how it was "Just a game for casuals" to explain why it was popular. That narrative re-emerged when Nintendo revealed NSMB U at E3 - how we deserved a "real" or hardcore (?) Mario instead of more generic casual junk. Because 2D Mario is casual now, at least when it has graphics we don't like. The hate and rationalization directed at the NSMB franchise is so cartoonish, it's difficult to not frame it in a cartoonish manner.*

Anyway, I won't derail the thread further with the usual case of The People Vs New Super Mario Bros. I'm sure the NSMB U launch thread will suffice for that or something :p

* Please note, pointing out that gesticulations of disgust at a game are overblown is not the same as saying people can't dislike it. When you present your dislike in a silly manner, you may be called silly.

How do I download the new single-player levels? (I don't want coin rush stuff.)

I spent like 5 minutes last night looking everywhere inside the game itself, doing searches in the eShop, and so on. I just couldn't find the levels. I found the full game ($40), I found downloadable MOVIES of the new stages. But I couldn't find the actual levels. Any help?
