Paper Mario: Sticker Star |OT| Delicious Flat Characters

This seems bizarre. If the game has a compartmentalized level structure (complete with overworld map), how do you get someone in a position where they don't know where to go next? Unless individual levels are extremely nonlinear, I find it hard to believe.

It could be from the fact that you need certain stickers to progress and that you need to backtrack to previous levels to find/use them (in some not-so-logical places), so I could see where some reviewers might get tripped up.

I haven't played any Paper Mario game since the first one and I'm really hoping that I'll enjoy this one. I was totally sold on it until I talked to a few of my game journo friends that are set to review it... Should be an interesting reception.

Hm, possibly.

What did they say?

A few have complained about getting really stuck?? I don't know. I got stuck in Super Metroid and it's still a great game guys. I've heard that it's more classic-style Mario than an RPG as well so that's sure to disappoint some. It's all been vague stuff like that. But it sounds like opinions are pretty divided.

I think that people who don't typically like RPGs are going to like it more than people who love Paper Mario games from the sounds of things.

It needs to be hard with unavoidable bad endings for taking too long, no saves, limited passwords and puzzles straight from Wizardry IV.

I have little faith in reviewers when it comes to judging a game's difficulty but that is troubling.

I have 2 copies coming to me from Amazon. How does Amazon shipping work for pre-orders? Do they mail them out early so it will arrive on Monday? Or do they just ship them on the first business day after release?

I have played TTYD, 64, and a good chunk of Super Mario RPG. My favorite is TTYD, especially the fighting in the arena and having to work your way to the top to battle Rawk Hawk.

Over the last 30 minutes my expectations for this game have drastically changed :lol

Not in a bad way, per se, just in terms of what the game will be like.

EDIT: based on that twitter conversation, apparently GameXplain and Kevin from GN were getting help requests from other reviewers, haha

Yup. This is all along the lines of what I've been hearing. Still, this problem is almost nullified for most players who know how to type "GameFAQs".

Well, Holmes's description of who would enjoy the game pretty much fits him like a glove, so I expect he quite liked it.

Depends on just how vague the hints are about progress. I don't mind random secrets being really, really hidden and out of the way. Those are the charming parts of older games, where I can go back and discover something I've passed by a hundred times. But being stuck on progressing the story can be very frustrating.

I'm at the point in my life now where I won't wait more than half an hour of being stuck before looking it up online. If it's ruining the flow for the game for me, it's worse than 'having to cheat'.

Alas, nothing can get my excitement down. This will be my game of the holidays.

Wow, surprised by the negative reactions.

I can't believe it's so hard. Why did they structure it like that? Paper Mario's are usually very easy.

Yeah, it looked a a bit too trivial and too easy for me.

Nonetheless, I have it preordered... not sure if I should keep it.

Now I'm actually starting to get a little worried... :\

I generally try to be pretty damn methodical in playing games, so hopefully this won't be an issue for me.

This is an overreaction. I'm reviewing the game for a local paper and I understand where they are coming from, but it's not nearly as bad as they make it out to be.

Review embargo lifts at 9am PT tomorrow. Hold judgments for then, folks.

I predict 6's and 7's from reviewers.

I'd guess the "finding car keys" analogy is an exaggeration. There might be some instances where there's literally no indication, but I doubt it's a common thing. We'll see, though.

Why on Earth couldn't they just make another regular ol' Paper Mario like the first two games? Those were so fantastic. Did they sell that poorly? I just don't understand.

If they made an regular PM I guess we'd get a lot of 'LOL, same old Mario' comments. Of course, now it's different we're getting 'WTF, why is Mario different!?' comments. Basically, people don't know what they want,

There are plenty of ways to build off of the groundwork laid by first 2 games and still keep things comfortably familiar. Nintendo games are rarely the same thing once you get to playing them. They may look similar on the outside, but they're almost always a unique experience.

This is complete bullshit. We haven't gotten a regular PM in 8 years. We've only gotten two of them. Both are beloved and their formulas haven't been re-engineered or explored to the fullest in a way where they're played out.

This isn't comparable to NSMB or the usual Mario "rehash" cricitism. Sure, there would have been some people who would have said something, but the magnitude wouldn't have been as great.

Hm... guess that's true. Same kind of deal with Thousand Year Door too.

Stickers are a good idea, after all, since it's paper. We'll see.
I just hope it's not too gimmicky or too simple.

Even the most hateful Nintendo detractors would have no problem with the xth iteration of the 1st and 2nd game's formula.

Maybe because they don't want to just make another regular ol' Paper Mario. I'm up for something different.

Yeah but the changes to Sticker Star sound great.

It's the horrid challenge that worries me. I actually hate games where I don't know what to do and needlessly look around. It's just an old, frustrating style of design. There is a reason I never played more than an hour or Myst back in the day.

My hopes are for the best, but Sticker Star looked and sounded like a 9.5/10 game, not it seems like a 7/10.

I wasn't very fond of Super Paper Mario, and Sticker Star misses the mark, I think it's time for Paper Mario the franchise to pack up and go away (hate to say it).

Yeah, I'm nervous. Guess I'll wait for the reviews. In this case, I don't give a damn about the scores, but the content—what the game is actually like. I love me some original Legend of Zelda, so maybe it'll be fantastic to me.

Is this Twitter guy the ultimate game guru or something? Who cares?

It's not one guy who is saying all of this stuff dude. It's a whole lot of people who are currently playing and reviewing the game for legitimate sites. Either way, we're just discussing this stuff for fun. What do you care?
