YEAR OF THE TRIPLE A BLOCKBUSTERS!

GOTY is Mark of The Ninja, suckers.

Dishonored is my favorite sleeper.

I still got a lot of hope in Far Cry 3 & Hitman.

Considering MP is a 2 gig download, they could have an update in the same vein as the BF updates where you just redownload the maps/MP with drastic changes made.

Or at least I assume they could make it work like that.

I would expect (and I believe they have) a delta system that works better than that. The reason BF has such gigantic updates is DICE has admitted that they can't assed to learn how to make compact updates. They're used to PC dev where you just reissue the map again, and they have no plans on changing their patching tech. So they just ship the entire map again and call it a day.

Meanwhile, 343 changed weapon functionality and essentially added a new weapon to all the existing maps and DLC maps in a 2MB title update.

What needs a TU:

- Anything that touches the animation system
- Anything that's a problem with a weapon (although we don't know if any gun in this game has the Reach TU-style Megalo hooks like they had for the Halo 1 Pistol, so no idea if they can change RoF/damage without going to a full TU)
- If they want to add any armor
- If they want to add any new objects to a map

What doesn't need a tU:

- Ordnance/weapon/objective placements (that's in the Forge variant)
- Certain geometry issues. They can place invisible solid objects to seal up maps in their Forge while we can't (they did this a LOT in Halo 3). A really bad problem with a map would need a TU though.

Out of what I've played, in no particular order:
Journey
Dark Souls PC
XCOM

Picking up a 3DS XL meant I got to Super Mario 3D Land this year. Now that's a wonderful video. Possibly my "game of the year".

I'm still not sure what to really think of Halo 4. I like lots of things. I dislike a of things.
Because Halo is just so close to my heart it makes it harder to break down and evaluate.

Is X-com that good? I have it I just haven't had time to open and play it.
Depends on how much you like the whole turn-based tactics thing, and how much the statement "Ezekiel Garcia, nickname Dongblainer, landed a critical hit on Muton Berserker for 26 damage" excites you.

Losing a game because of fortunate spawns of power weapons sucks. It's not competitive, it's not balanced, it's not skill determining the outcome, it's handing wins out based on chance.

Playing with Tashi the other night on Abandoned, we have a one kill lead and position with very little time left in the game, the last spawn of weapons comes up, the other team gets a sniper... we get a needler.

That scenario is really preferred by people compared to being in complete control of your own outcome? People really like tilted playing fields that move based on percent chance?

I get it - if you want to be luckily rewarded and still have a chance to win even though you've been out played... fine. But say so - camping power weapons was never a problem. The problem is people thinking controlling the power weapons because of a higher skill set was a bad thing. Just because something is "dynamic" doesn't mean it's good.

If you get shit on trying to get a power weapon in a static spawn and timer, that's your bad. If you get shit on with lead, position, and time on your side because of a fortunate spawn in the game... that's the game's bad.
Gratzi. You saved my wrist.

You realize each side is red/blue tinted? I didn't notice until last night.

Also, fellow HaloGAF, keep me in your thoughts, I'm going through some terrible personal issues, and I've about hit my limit today. My son & nightly games of Halo are the only thing keeping me sane. Thanks <3

Stay well. I've kept my promise and have been dropping money to the CFF whenever I can. Will do so again real soon.

There's a bunch of games I liked this year, but nothing that really bowled me over on the big retail game scene. Even Halo 4 has too many things I dislike about it to be something I'd vote GotY.

IDK, I think we just need some new hardware. Next year has got some new IPs I really think should be great(The Last of Us directed by the Uncharted 2 guy, Wonderful 101 the new project by Hideki "DA GOD" Kamiya, and can I include Bioshock Infinite here? It's mostly a spiritual sequel at best).

Fuck Solace, god that map is so irritating. It's fucking getting shot across map ALL the fucking TIME.

Then it's like a fucking labyrinth to navigate with all the shit in the way.

I just got killed by a guy on Solace and managed to spawn and kill him before his shields popped back up. Had my customary two games of the day but don't have much urge to play on. Not bothered about reaching SR-22 and getting some spunky new emblem design.

I don't understand why they put that glowing orange shit in the middle of the map. It makes it so that you are firing at your opponent based on your reticule being red instead of actually seeing them.

Yep, this map is the perfect example how it is different in matchmaking.

When I played it at Eurogmer and saw it on MLG Dallas I thought this map is awesome etc, now I vote against it as much as possible

Halo 4
X-Com
Borderlands 2
AC3
Sleeping Dogs
Mass Effect 3 (despite the ending)
Dishonored

Is most likely my order.

Didn't get around to X-Com or Dishonored, but Sleeping Dogs was a great game. Really, really fun game that nearly combined the fun elements of GTA with the quirkiness of Saints Row. Will hopefully get to Dishonored after Christmas, when the glory of Halo 4 has faded and ACIII is complete.

Although Solace is my least favorite map, I don't mind it too bad. I vote against it whenever it pops up. I perform well on every map except Solace. For some reason I just play terribly on that damn map. And the bottom is pointless (as randomrosso said) after the initial rush to get the Incineration Cannon. I didn't even know that the beam in the middle was a man cannon. Looks like something that should kill you.

Happened twice on Haven very clearly so far for me, possibly more but less clear so I didn't really take notice. First time it happened I kinda just stopped playing moving my guy and literally shook my head. Forgot I have to clip that out and Youtube it.

Its one thing in CoD where everybody is essentially one shot so no matter how bad the spawns are its still midly fair.

In Halo its just wrong.
The problem I have with that whole scenario is that you're punished for winning. Let's say you 1v1 a guy and win, and your shields are drained, and he cleans you up off of insta-respwan before you can get your shields back. How is that fair?

This - I faced a guy today that got 3 global drops for an inceration cannon in Dominion and used it to single handedly kill 13 people trying to enter the base to capture the point. I was absolutely baffled when I saw the post game stats and watched the video to find out it wasn't an entire team holding C - it was one guy with an inceration cannon!

Forgot to mention that our side of the map kept spawning Light Rifles and Supressors as global ordnance.... Awesome.
Now this I can fully grock and see where the gripes are coming from.

But on the other side of the coin, it can be nice to get some decent ordnance that can turn the tide when you're losing. I've seen a lot of matches go back and forth more than I had with my previous Halo experience, but I don't have as much experience in multiplayer over the years as many here. I just remember dipping my toes in Halo 3 and Reach and seeing a good team dominate early and easily hold that for the duration. Halo 4 has had some very fun and hard pitched battles of a different nature, and I do like how often sides can switch control of the battlefield.

So Halo 4 has disrupted the formula, which for me leads to more dynamic matches, where many here see only chaos.

Apparently you don't care for the Sword or Incineration Cannon.

Or you just don't play Halo 4 very often.

There's a sword down there?

Eh. Weapon placements in Halo 4 have confused the funk out of me. Only time I went down there was because I saw an icon for the Incineration Cannon.

Yeah right next to the Flaming Sword Launcher of Why Are There Two Power Weapons Side by Side.

sad but true.

'Join in progress' they said. Our networking code is 'silky smooth' they said.

Gaaah. Too many blackscreens and too much rubberbanding!

Blame the mexican like always.

Static Ordinance Rocket Launchers in Dominion takes the fun of playing that gametype.

I don't think I've been on the bottom level of Solace more than once. Seems completely pointless

You can go easily to the upper enemy base without trouble also the incinerator cannon

I thought the gameplay was decent at best. The game is largely a shooter and doesn't do shooting particularly well.

Love the new avatar, but not as much as the old one. Careful what you wish for regarding extraterrestrial copulation.
