Destiny Reveal Thread

The one bad thing about it i'll say is this: its painful to watch something this ambitious fall into the limitations of what will probably be nearing a previous-gen by the time it comes out

It just fucking sucks to hear them keep on throwing the world AMBITIOUS and HUGE around when they're working on such old hardware.
They're also refering to the next 10 years when they say "Ambitious" and "Huge". I agree though. I'm interested to see what they draw out of this gen. Seemed like Reach was their effort to get everything they could hardware wise.
My dream would be Destiny being a launch title for the Durango and the PS4.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a current gen title. The PS4 and next Xbox will probably have an install base around 10 million combined after a year and a game like this probably needs a large install base to thrive. There is supposedly going to be a new game every other year, so the next title will most likely be next gen.

This game is going to be on both current and next gen platforms.

Well, considering how ambitious this game sounds, the engine alone probably took, and may still be taking, a shit-ton of time to make. I'm not a game developer so I don't know the typical protocol and process for game-making, but I'd imagine making the game's engine and perfecting its "playability" comes way before pretty-ing up the graphics.

Seriously, Bungie stated this was a glimpse into their new IP. They NEVER said it would be in-depth. Have some sense, people.
People would rather complain. Then have any sort of commen sense.
I'm fine what we were shown today. I wasn't expecting that much.

If Destiny I has more then 32 players in any one instance i'll be very, very surprised.
There is mention of "raids" in the previews, so it sounds like there will be some sort large scale co op. Maybe not 32 players but more then the normal 4 players of a normal console co op game.

It'll be disappointing if the only we're gonna get is a concept art montage with generic haunting music playing and some guy in the background speaking in a boring, monotone voice.

jettradamus strikes again. That was a crap "reveal".

That concept menu had a max squad size of 6. No idea how that applies to raids or PvP though.

What do you mean? The scope alone of this game sets it light-years away from their previous ones. The space theme, and it being an FPS it's them building on their strengths. Did you expect a high fantasy RPG?

Pathway out of darkness video: "whats bigger than halo?"

Well cod, gears, battlefield off the top of my head. Really bad question to build up hype.

I thought the same thing tbh, but I think they were more referring to the extended universe and merchandising that those games you mentioned don't have. Maybe they hope for Destiny to follow that path.

Then why did they hype it up and fly people out from all over the world for it? If they had just put out this vidoc with little to no pre-announcement or hype it would have been totally in-line with expectations. This whole thing makes less and less sense the more I think about it. Starting to buy into Gerstmann's theory that something got pulled last minute.

Yeah the fact that this is releasing on shoddy old hardware (yes, the 360 is OLD ass hardware people)...just blows.

Statement prepared for all the "Can't ignore the install base" comments. Well with that mentality then no games should ever be made for the next systems and the next systems just shouldn't even come out...The previous gen will ALWAYS have a much larger install base for years after the new hardware comes out.

Its games like this that could go all out on new hardware only and really sell people on jumping into the new systems right away. Instead, releasing it on old gen tech allows people the opportunity to be complacent and not adopt new systems. From a business perspective, this makes no sense, you always want people jumping onto your new hardware in droves.

Killzone 2 was pretty grey but still...

Bear in mind this was 4 years ago (and doing 32 players online). Why on earth have they decided to go current-gen...

Money bro, money! the install base of the ps3 and 360 is huge. So if this game should come out this year (hell even 2014) it will still have allot more players then the next gen systems.

I imagine that "something" was a last minute business deal between Sony/MS and Activision to make Destiny a part of their new console unveiling. Somewhere a truckload of cash was delivered which forced Bungie to alter their plans

Indeed. We really don't know anything (inb4that'stheproblem) so it's a bit early to condemn them as well as to pledge allegiance to Destiny. I'll wait to see some good gameplay before making a solid preorder.

I agree with most here that the Viddoc was pretty underwhelming. There wasn't shown much.
But we've to keep in mind that it's still faaaaar from release. Also the setting and story seem pretty neat. I'm not too fond of the always online thing but the online multiplayer sounds pretty cool. I trust Bungie. I guess we've to wait and see...

I'm not saying they aren't. They get paid to go and write about this stuff. Woe is them I guess?

Which is kind of the point. They think that Bungie wasted their time, when they could have been writing those articles they get paid for. It's not "oh this was boring boohoo", and more "I have deadlines to meet, and this flushed a day and a half down the drain that could have been put towards those deadlines".

That concept menu had a max squad size of 6. No idea how that applies to raids or PvP though.

Jeff G seemed to be under the impression that raids would be 6 players.

So they should have just stayed home and wrote articles about something else? Because their Destiny articles aren't driving traffic to their websites?

Yeah, they never said that the reveal would be in depth, but they did use an elaborate week-long ARG (which required coordination and cooperation between people literally all over the world) and a full social media/PR blitzkrieg to lead up to it.

Coupled with the fact that Bungie has been completely dark for two years and some change, I think the disappointment is totally understandable.

So I don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but my friend found on the destiny webpage source code that not only will the game be cross gen, but it could potentially hit the Wii U and vita as well.

PC? Oh lord, the news for a PC release keeps getting better and better! I'm so stoked for this game. Keyboard and mouse is my preferred medium for shooters AND MMOs!

No PC version. I'm kind of depressed now.

This gives me hope.

Not to mention the aliasing and FOV was pretty poor in the gameplay segments.

They want that last gen player base.

A number of people in this thread seemingly can't realize that Activision and Bungie are not hardware companies, but exclusively software. They don't care about selling new hardware. All they look at when developing software is the number consoles/PCs/hardware in homes. Yeah, I am sure Sony and Microsoft would love to have an ambitious AAA exclusive title release near the launch of their hot new hardware, but Activision and Bungie can only look and see <5 million next-gen consoles sold (personal guess) by game launch. Destiny has been in development for 3+ years and with the costs accumulated over that time they would be crazy to ignore the 76+ million Xbox 360s and 70+ million PS3s already sold.

Now that Bungie is independent you can be sure that they want their games to be on every platform. I personally predict something Destiny related with be mentioned during the Sony PS4 event on Wednesday and when E3 comes arround there will be a full unveiling with plenty of gameplay running on next gen hardware from both companies. The game will be scaled up appropriately to take advantage of the new power.

So, has anyone considered maybe they didn't show a lot of gameplay because it's probably in fucking alpha (or pre-alpha) stage and isn't supposed to look pretty yet?

Fucking hell.

Of course!

But why reveal it then if it's to early to show? Even the D3 reveal had gameplay in it though it was 4 years out...
Fucking hell.

I'm not sure if you actually understand what I actually posted, so I'll just go ahead and reply "no".

The argument, I imagine, is "If you were just going to show us concept art and tell us about how cool the game is going to be, why did we fly all the way here? You could have sent this stuff to us via the internet."

Would be neat if true, but I fear for Destiny on a Wii console. They don't exactly have the most shooter friendly controllers.

So despite being unimpressed with the "style" and the fact that it's an FPS.

After watching what giantbomb has to say and what Sessler has to say...

I'm actually intrigued. Activision might turn it into a microtransaction rape-fest but I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

And this was a big reveal, which will generate traffic towards their sites. Meaning $. Was I planning on watching/reading anything on IGN today? Nope. Did I? Yeah, I ended up watching the video stream and reading a couple of their articles. Hardly a waste of time for them if it generates traffic towards them.

Besides the journos not seeing what they felt they should see, I'll wager a guess that they are happy with the event in terms of driving people towards them.

Thats just too many platforms. As it is, I have a hard time believing some Activision teams are not assisting Bungie in making the game, or maybe handling their own platform outright. PS3/4, 360/720, and PC is already 5 platforms! Adding another two just seems insane. I'm hoping the Vita version is just some added connectivity to the PS3/4 versions. I could see them doing something cool with that.

Who else is worried that this game could be too ambitious and lack focus to achieve greatness? Remember in the past Bungie has only ever worked on 1 platform at a time. Now 4-5 at least???

Websites should do their research before posting crap like that from the source code. That code is part of Activision's default pre-order/buy-now web code. It has components for all systems other than 3DS.

You can see it here too: http://www.callofduty.com/blackops2/buynow

Code:
   ATVI.components.preorder = {
        init: function(form, dataMap) {
            form = $(form);
            var mem = {};
            this.setupPlatformHandler(form, dataMap, mem);
            this.setupRegionHandler(form, dataMap, mem);
            this.setupLinks(form, dataMap, mem);
            this.setBundles(form, dataMap, mem);
            mem.currPlatformObj.click();
        },

        setupPlatformHandler: function(form, dataMap, mem) {
            mem.currPlatform = "";
            mem.currPlatformObj = $(form.find(".platform-item")[0]);
            var platformClasses = mem.platformClasses = {
                    pc: "platform-pc",
                    ps3: "platform-ps3",
                    ps4: "platform-ps4",
                    xbox: "platform-xbox",
                    xbox720: "platform-xbox720",
                    wiiu: "platform-wiiu",
                    psvista: "platform-psvita"
            };
            var pci = mem.platformsByClass = {};
            for(var pc in platformClasses) {
                if(platformClasses.hasOwnProperty(pc)) {
                    pci[platformClasses[pc]] = pc;
