Major Nelson: Can play used games on different Xbox w/o fee but in your profile only

What's funny is that their Office 365 DRM is probably more friendly than this (I think it can be activated on 5 machines, and software can be used offline)

That's because I think it's really about Kinect data mining and the future of advertisements with Kinect.

They talked a shit ton about TV, but you didn't hear anything about the commericals. That's the most important part.

Hey...Gaf Gaming Journalists...

how bout you guys ask Sony about this? To clarify things now that the XO is revealed.

but honestly...I don't care anymore...I'll just buy a Wii U this year and wait/hope these fools fall on their faces hard.

What if we have multiple Xbox? Can it detect a a household behind the same router? Right now we have a 360 upstairs and downstairs. With the X1 let you play on different profiles if they machines are less than 20 feet apart?

PS4 "will play used games," just like they said it.

You know, just like the XB1 will play used games.

You know it's coming.

oh brother. I don;t buy used games but not being able to take a game over to my friends house is pretty shitty

They really haven't said anything definite about used games. But they have taken a gigantic dump on lending games. Which honestly is a much bigger deal to me, and is so weird if they are claiming to support used games.

How is this different than PC or Steam?
Because PC isn't a closed platform? I can get plenty of DRM free games on PC if I choose to.

Of all the things you'd want to emulate from PC, I don't know why you'd want them to pick anti consumer practices such as DRM.

If we're talking about Steam directly, they're not really similar at all. You only need to be connected to Steam the first time you launch a game or to download a game, then you can use it offline forever if you want. I also don't need to pay additional fees to access the online component of games on Steam.

If Xbox wants to have PC style DRM, then they better have PC game style prices.

Well, this is pretty fucking obvious. You're just accessing your own content on another machine. If you couldn't do this Microsoft would be pulling a Nintendo. This news changes nothing.

You'll be able to do that. You won't be able to lend it to him, but while you're there playing with your friend, it'll work fine, no fee.

I don't understand. Is this major nelsons idea when he says used games can be used on a console? There will not be one retailer that will sell a used xbox one game.

All word thus far from Sony has been to the contrary.

So until we hear otherwise you can stop trying to do damage control by making assumptions.

No idea what you mean by damage control. Has it been firmly established and confirmed that the Ps4 is not charging any fees to play used games? Seems to me Sony is has not given answer on this.

That would actually be a cool way to solve that problem, but no. So far it does what the 360 does with digital content. You tie a game to a gamertag profile and a piece of hardware. Anyone on that hardware can play the game. If you download the game on another console the gamertag that purchased the game will need to be online.

Playing a game at a friend's house is not "lending". Lending means you give them the game to play for a while, not that you go visit them.

Sony is the next to "fuck up" along with Microsoft. EA didn't just drop the online pass on all future titles because only one of the next gen systems was implementing it at the hardware level. PS4 is next. Have fun people.
Oh man. James Mielke is going to have an aneurysm if that happens, if his twitter feed is any indication.

Just a random thought.

EDIT: I think this explains his fanboyism.

This is somewhat tangentially related, something I've always wondered:

With Steam's Offline Mode, what's to stop someone from making an "ultimate account" with tons of games, and then sharing that account with all of his friends (or, hell, an organized online community) who can then play those games indefinitely in Offline Mode?

Obviously, you'd miss out on multiplayer experiences like Dota 2, but beyond that...?

People are saying it's like steam, with the response "Except without all the benefits". What benefits does Steam have in this situation? Am I missing something?

Of course, how else would you expect they do it? If they are blocking used games, this is how it is done. You aren't going to make them run on only one piece of hardware, but one account.

Major Nelson got destroyed in the comment section of this blog and hasn't posted on Twitter since, should be interesting what he says next

Everything Xbox Live offers, but for free? Offline play without need for internet connection?

I'm not sure what answers you're looking for.

MS is basically taking away all the advantages consoles had over PC gaming, and giving none of the advantages of PC gaming in return.

He ought to be destroyed. They probably won't listen, but the only way we can fight this anti-consumer policy is to voice our displeasure and to vote with our dollar.

If I have to buy more than one game for my household....then I am out.

Many rumors suggested family accounts for the same price as standard accounts now. I wonder if that is one of the things that will help to deal with this issue.
