Once you reach 500, a new tier of crafting materials will be available to you; this new tier of materials will be made by combining lower tier materials.

Oh wow, this will completely reinvigorate the tier materials market. Such a great way of introducing new materials without invalidating old ones.

Interesting post. The best parts:

New Skills and Traits: This is a game changer, at least to me. I mean, I feel like I should have expected new traits and skills at some point, but this is still a surprise. This is exactly what the game needs to break some monotony, and if implemented correctly, can make more viable, unique builds. It's not quite as exciting as new professions or races, but in terms of keeping in line with their goal of constant horizontal (dammit) progression, this had to happen. My question is, does this include weapon skills?

Account Magic Find: He took the words straight out of my mouth. The stats vs. loot problem really went against their core principles, and was a big pain in the ass for dungeon groups. I think most of us asked for this, and now we got it.

The only thing I feel weird about, and it's not necessarily a bad weird, and that's that just about every activity is getting a bonus chest now. I get the concept; they're trying to incentivize more varied activities, which is a great idea. However, it's a bit of a paradox where, if you increase rewards all across the board, people will still go to the activities with the highest reward in the least amount of time. In some ways, this is an awesome addition because it spices up more content in the world. But also, it became a necessity as adding those chests to world events killed a ton of other activities. Now they have to play a balance game between each type of activity, which is a weird problem.

The other weird thing was allowing legendaries to switch their stat distribution on the fly at any time. I guess I can count this as awesome though, since it makes legendaries that much more valuable.

Overall, this had some stuff that was great to hear. I think what I'm really waiting to hear though is some kind of introduction of quest lines (I know they hate that word) that span multiple areas. Living story has been interesting, but I don't think we're going to get the depth of story we're looking for without more progression in the style of the personal story. Something that sends us out to existing lands but layers on more content and lore.

Either way, it seems like a lot of their experimenting has been fruitful, and now we're seeing some of the benefits. I'm excited to see what they can do with the two week updates. I'd like to see some off-the-wall stuff.

I don't know if mf consumable is worth the merchant price for fine items.

Masterwork I throw in mf toilet anyway for rare chance.

I understood this to mean that drops would be account bound while crafted would not be, allowing the crafters to actually make decent steady gold without making it completely necessary to craft or buy.
That would make sense I guess. I see now the language doesn't exclude that...

Yea there's a lot of awesome sounding stuff there, but one thing I really want is Swimsuits an account wide dye system. GW2 already has the best dye system in any mmorpg I've played, but that would make it like... 100x better.

Also you want people to care about salvaging greens? remove the bloody warning message "hey are you sure you want to salvage this garbage item? Y/Y" (or is this already gone? FFXIV has made me a little behind the times)

Legendary Gear and Precursors
We aren’t quite ready to go into all the details here, but what I can say is you will see a specific way to build precursor items on your way to a legendary. On top of this, you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013. Building your precursor will require a large amount of the new crafting material rewards listed above, 500 in crafting, and likely a combination of other items earned for completing more specific content in the game.

Precursor pricing plummeting when this goes in!

What you say? :p

As to your question, Colin did mention new weapons for the existing classes coming before new professions. I really hope so. Changing a weapon already changes up a class's playstyle so much.

Essentially, this is a completely, permanently unavoidable issue. What this change will do is make doing other things more valuable for the rest of us. :)

No, I'm pretty sure it's still there. Insufferable.

It only uses that message for greens and above. But yeah, you should be able to turn that off over time.

What you say? :p

Dang it, horizontal! I was distracted.

Wow...that's quite an overwhelming blog post.

Pretty soon I guess just start hoarding Gold, crafting stuff, EVERYTHING to prepare for some of this.

well I did specifically say greens. It's just doesn't really feel necessary as I can't think of a point where you'd go "oh no how could I have accidentally salvaged that green!"

Yeah, I can't say I enjoy having to confirm breaking down every green when I'm trying to get the salvage monthly.

They mention LFG again, which makes me think it's right around the corner. If you've read as many of these ArenaNet blogs/posts/interviews as I have, you start to notice that they drop hints about stuff way in advance. I mean, as far back as February Colin was dropping hints about the two-week update cycle ("I mean, take everything that happened in January, and condense it down to say, a week's worth of content and then the next week there’s more story that builds on that. Is that something that would interest you guys?").

They don't mention stuff that isn't done already, or at least very close to it. That they've mentioned LFG so much lately makes me think it's coming in either the next update (and they're just not mentioning it on the Release page) or the one after that in August.

The only thing I feel weird about, and it's not necessarily a bad weird, and that's that just about every activity is getting a bonus chest now. I get the concept; they're trying to incentivize more varied activities, which is a great idea. Was just talking to Jira about that. Since, in theory, every Champion now drops a chest, they might somehow limit the number of Bonus Chests you can get per day. Let's say you can get 5 chests per day; you pick which champions you want to kill, which determines what rewards you get, but you only get to do those five. It would mean the World Event train breaks up to look for specific things instead of everyone just going after what ever pops first and zerging it down.

I feel like one of the problems with the World Events now is that they can't get really creative with the encounters because they have to be built for obscene numbers of people.

Living story has been interesting, but I don't think we're going to get the depth of story we're looking for without more progression in the style of the personal story.

They said in yesterday's livestream that more Personal Story is coming.

This is silly but I think I'm most excited for the Champion rewards. :p I mean, high-level I'm over the moon at new skills coming this year, and that has massive implications throughout the game. But really, just seeing a worthwhile opportunity any time you spot a champ will make the overworld so much more fun for me to traverse. I don't really even need the chest to be all that great, just something more than my 34000th blue level 75 Rampager's Cabalist Coat and I am there. I really hope that change comes within the next two months.
They mention LFG again, which makes me think it's right around the corner.
Yeah, Colin seems pumped about it. I'm gonna wager august actually.

I wonder if they're going to put in the new dungeon reward system with the LFG or really any of the stuff they talked about to kinda coincide with it.

That combo would make the most sense, but the dungeon reward overhaul is a ton of work from the sound of things, not least of all because they have to decide on a reward point for every single path. Then again, I was shocked to learn that even with 4 separate living story teams working simultaneously, that is still less than half of ArenaNet's full development workforce.

Why would they have to limit the Champ reward chests? They can just put a different loot table in those chests that doesn't include Rares and Exotics but has skins, materials, etc... that isn't in the current DE chests.

What about suckers like me that actually grabbed all of the MF ascended stuff :(. Hopefully we get some percentage back of current MF gear or something. Like a Mannequin we dress up with the mf gear we have, get as high a total as possible, and some % of that goes to your account MF.

Time to finally 400 leatherworking for Master Crafter. Been putting it off for half a year. Gonna hoard shit up, like Levyne said.

This update prospective was great. Really reinvigorating stuff. That magic find change is another one of those "thank fuck Anet can read my mind" type of thing (along with getting rid of energy entirely), and 500 crafting + ascended and precursors is just icing. Can't wait to start champion hunting in order to break up the monotony of event trains.

I see significant, positive change at every level of time commitment: short term and long term and everything in between. Arenanet is still surprising me. The only unfortunate thing is that new PvP gametypes don't seem to be in the cards any time soon.

We’ll also expand the competitive options for game play: providing a queue and leaderboards for solo rated play separate from team rated play, adding new map types
Though who knows of course what that means.

Anyway true PvP starts Tuesday with the triumphant return of the Hunger Royale...

Man, I wonder what the release schedule for this stuff looks like!!! Which parts are for August, which are for Decemeber?!

PVP activity is not "true PvP"...also activity supporters are bad people and should get 100 lashes per day.

Don't worry, they'll replace magic find with magic find find, which increases your ability to find account magic find increasing items.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/0...n-johanson-outlines-big-plans-and-course-cor/

Bit of new info:

As for the high-level zone of Orr, Johanson spoke positively of how interesting it would be to see it cleansed, but he said that showing the progression of the story's timeline there would be a challenge due to the intersection of the personal story. While he didn't rule out future changes to Orr, it's likely that players will see new regions before the story returns to Zhaitan's former home base.

Although Johanson couldn't commit to a timeframe, new weapon types and expansion of current types to more classes is absolutely in the works.

One new type of Legendary gear will definitely be putting in an appearance this year and will likely be a trinket such as a ring or amulet. Several of the current Legendaries will also receive appearance-enhancing makeovers.

Anyone who has started to find him or herself rapidly running out of bank and inventory space may be pleased to hear that finding more player-friendly ways to handle GW2's tons of collectable armor looks is high on ArenaNet's priority list.

Finally, Johanson provided some information about the feedback the development team has been receiving regarding the gem store's controversial RNG-based gambling boxes. He said that ArenaNet is constantly experimenting to find a good balance between revenue and being as fair as possible to the players. Feedback for the current kite fortunes has been better than previous iterations, and future updates will experiment with ways to make the boxes even more player-friendly.

Well... This will definitely keep me playing the game.

Also makes me want to hold off on focusing on a legendary at the moment, to see the new legendaries first.

Might as well still collect all the mats, since their use will carry on to the next batch of legendary stuff.

Though who knows of course what that means.

I saw that. I think if they meant new game types, they would have said so. Map types sounds like he means more interactivity, larger or smaller size, different bottlenecks, etc.

I think it means map types as in game modes, I.e. spirit watch.

Legendary trinkets? But they aren't cosmetic...

...

OR ARE THEY

Why must we always start with trinkets...ugh. ARMORS AND WEAPONS are way more important and cooler.

Can't wait to wear my legendary rings over my legendary gloves because I need to show them off to people.

I honestly think they will not be cosmetic, you will just get the benefit of changing the stats for what ever build you want to run instead of transmuting.

Weapons and Armor have to be designed for 5 races and 2 sexes plus 6 different items x 3 material types and then animations for both armor and 19 weapons is a HELL of a lot more work than putting in the smaller stuff first. Granted they could do the harder stuff first and work down, but I think they'd rather give us something sooner while we wait rather than waiting for the big stuff then getting the smaller stuff down the line.

Ah yes. .that would be the case....a legendary grind (using that loosely) seems not worth it for one variable trinket slot..

Well, with all that was announced I'm kinda considering not playing until it's all implemented. Sure, do living world and events but day to say stuff... Hmm

Awesome news about Magic Find. It was one of their most glaring lingering blunders (the concept seemed fine, but indeed the "egotism vs selflessness" conflict was completely broken).

As for what to do with already existing MF items, if they have the system in place that lets you change Legendaries' stats, perhaps they can implement an one-time change for all current MF items to replace their MF stat currency with any other of your choice.
Edit: Which is functionally identical to what Retro posted above, eheh. :D

edit: I can't bring myself to play a female character in any game where the character is my character. I wish I could operate under the assumption that everybody played the gender they identified with in real life but it is certainly not to be.

Came late to this discussion but I find this interesting. I tend to gravitate towards female characters as I find them more interesting and cooler (and also way less overdone). I guess it also helps that some of my earliest "favorite characters ever" were Rydia, Terra and Celes.

I also understad the argument for a "this is myself" character, but, well, I'm already myself all the time, and I'm not particularly interesting. :D

But the weird thing is that I DO find myself unable to understand why a (cisgender) male would use a female avatar in a forum (something that I see a whole lot on GAF). I never thought about it but right now I'm slightly perplexed at this arbitrary distinction I seem to make.

Reddit released traffic stats:

Matches up precisely with what we've heard from ArenaNet about the in-game population, and really is just pretty impressive all around... the Dec->Jan especially plus Feb->March, and Apr->May are great stuff.

Those are traffic stats for GW2? Seems a bit low if there's only half a million unique connections during a whole month, especially considering three million boxes have been sold. It's still a healthy population, especially considering how stable it seems to be in the long run.

You know.. I have to say I'm not excited for Legendary Armor or Accesories. It's a crap shoot as to whether or not a person would like the design of the armor, it would be an insane everything sink to collect it for all the slots, and Legendary Accesories could only be visibly noticed if the had some kind of aura or particle effect on the player... and the last thing GW2 needs is more particle effects during a fight.

More weapons is great though and adjusting current weapons effects is great too. I just think Armor and Accessories shouldn't have a Legendary equivalent.

No no that's for the GW2 subreddit, not the game itself. If you consider the fact that forum communities are a minority, that's a lot of people for a subset of the overall playerbase.

I'll probably still use my next set of WvW Badges for one more exo armor set for my guard, but yeah, start hoarding them from there.

Same with my current Bolt goal...will grab it since I am so close (SOON) and then start hoarding.

Hoard everything!
