Here is how replacing your HDD on PS4 works (ComputerBild)

Would really like to know about SSD compatibility. I'd love to pop a 500GB SSD in this PS4... but am not going to spend the money until I know there is a solid performance gain.

New update. from google translate :

"to update the sound development of the PS4. In the laboratory, the editor measures the "noise" that produces the console menu mode. After ten minutes of run time are the Sone 0815, measured 40 inches away from the device. At this distance is heard a slight noise. By comparison, the first version of the PS3 is after ten minutes at 0.83 sone."

I didn't have any doubts it would be reasonably quiet when in the menu.

I am a little concerned though when you play a game (for some time). That will be the interesting figure.

Likewise, I'd like to know if putting a 128GB or 256GB SSD in it would be viable or would it complain about the storage being less than expected?

I doubt this would happen. Until we know how much of that 500GB is lost to the OS though, I'm not sure I'd suggest such small drives.

I'm starting to have doubts about whether they'll really disassemble the console :/

Please don't say that! It'll happen, in time. I hope.

I'm surprised no one has changed the thread title to reflect the minds blown by the Sony screw.

I'm surprised at the self-control being demonstrated by those here in not making every post some kind of humorous / lewd innuendo.

In the comments they said already, that they will do that in the coming weeks, not now.

"Nein, momentan gibt es leider keine weiteren Bilder zum Innenleben der Konsole. In kommenden Wochen bis zum Start der PS4 liefern wir derartige Details aber nach"

Translation: No, unfortunately there won´t be any more pictures of the console innards right now. In the coming weeks until PS4 launch we will provide these kind of details.

Ah, I missed that. Thanks.

Window closed, I'll wait for the inevitable GAF thread when someone somewhere does it.

Ok now that we know where the HDD is located can someone tel me what is this strange cover near the bottom :

Well my insider friend told me that it's where the secondary dedicated GPU will be placed.

Sony didn't include it yet to fool MS into thinking the difference between the PS4 and the Xbone is negligible.

And because of NDAs.

Soon everything will be pretty clear, and the real power of the PS4 (around 6.7 hyper flops) will be revealed!

Take that MisterXmedia! =D

I think you are mistaken, this is where the local cloud will be inserted before shippment.

Boot time on a dev console is probably longer as it has to load more stuff into memory.

I'd love SATA3 but I'm expecting SATA2.

well yeah i know you can still use 9.5, but what i'm getting at is, if most of the higher capacity drives are 15, youre basically stuck with 9.5 anyway then. the extra space for fitting 12.5 doesnt seem all that useful if no one is making drives that size

There's currently a bit of a limit on physical size and we've come to a standstill, 2TB is available on 15mm right now and the difficulty in shrinking right now is huge, so I'm pretty sure 2TB@12.5mm will be here long before 2TB@9.5mm

I'm going to shed a tear if it's not SATA3. I mean honestly... what kind of cost difference are we talking about between the two formats? A nickel?

$1? so 100million dollars across a generation?

I have a 500GB SSD in my PS3 right now that I will swap with the drive in the PS4.

That should work right?

It makes me wonder if someone is going to be selling "upgraded HDD" PS4s after launch on Ebay or whatever as an elaborate scheme to harvest the screws from multiple units without taking a huge hit to the wallet.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
lol @ dat screw, seriously.

Are there any 7200RPM drives that are as silent as Samsung's or Toshiba's 5400 drives? I hate to hear clickety-clik from these drives as they're seeking.

I can't find any clear pics or videos. Is there only one screw holding the top on that you take off to replace the HDD? And where is the screw? Not the front obviously.
