‘Game of Thrones’ Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff in the Works From ‘The Batman Part II’ Writer

HBO is developing another Game of Thrones spinoff series.

The company is actively heating up its long-in-discussion Aegon’s Conquest idea.

HBO is partnering with Mattson Tomlin, an in-demand scribe who did uncredited work on Matt Reeve’s The Batman and is co-writing its upcoming sequel The Batman Part II. He also wrote the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation BRZRKR and an animated Terminator series which he is also showrunning for Netflix.

Aegon’s Conquest is basically a direct prequel to the hit House of the Dragon, telling the story of the Targaryen’s bloody and brutal conquest of Westeros. The story follows the invader Aegon Targaryen, who conquered the continent of Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons. Aegon successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms in just two years, with only Dorne able to successfully resist.

I know Aegon’s Conquest is one a lot of people wanted to see but for me there are more interesting stories from that history. Outside of Dorne Aegon just steamrolls everyone. It's Aegon and/or his sisters moving from one place to the next with the opposition either getting destroyed or surrendering because they know they don't have a chance. It's not like The Dance of the Dragons (which is what was adapted into House Of The Dragon) where you've got more evenly matched sides and people switching back and forth. I hope it turns out great but I'm not quite sure what the story is there. It's a good historical note to show just how powerful dragons within that world are but I'm not sure how well it stands on its own.

Aegon's conquest is probably going to have many more battles and action than any other part of this lore. Which means it's also going to be the most boring one. I liked the first few seasons of GOT because they were about the scheming, the characters trying to gain more power and the houses trying to fuck each other out. And when some fight was happening, it mattered. I don't care about constant action scenes that much, how many times you need to see a dragon roaring or someone swing his sword on some other person?

Him talking about thinking there should be less sex scenes makes him an unlikely candidate for a Westeros project too.

He isn't wrong though. GoT was ruined by adding sex scenes to pad run time instead of actually focusing on something that actually mattered. If I want porn I'll hit up Xtube.

He is wrong about them being overused though. Yeh there’s outliers like Game or Thrones (which started in 2011 and finished almost five years ago) but sex scenes are far less common than they used to be. And this is also at a time where there’s an increased demand for films to not feature them. Sex is part of life so there’s nothing wrong with depicting it, watching one isn’t the same as watching porn.

This seems a treacherous story for today.

First, rampant incest.

Second, it's a colonizer story, the Valyrians using overwhelming force to subjugate the indigenous peoples. Aegon is the hero?

Third, where does it go? Might is right?

I think they can lean in on the "visions" stuff a bit, that his conquest serves a greater good, but even that echoes very troubling (by 'modern' academic standards) narrative.

Plus it makes honoring the casting choices of House of the Dragon difficult, a problem very specific to this period especially.

Personally, I'd have a show focused on the Westeros houses as they respond to Targaryen invasion and subjugation, almost a Red Dawn vibe, who will join, who will resist, etc. White haired folk should only be seen through dragon fire and smoke in just a few scenes.

Targaryens are just strategic bombers carpet bombing mid evil castles. Like how is that going to be interesting?

It will be the most boring concept to have and everybody knows from day one how this is going to end. Which is the complete opposite of what made game of thrones so good.

I also don't know what could be interesting like at all to start with.

Maybe a more interesting concept is Targaryens fighting in there own land before westeros some other equally as strong opponent. But we also already had this happen in game of thrones with those nightwalkers.

You know the last 2 seasons of GOT and George's refusal to put out any more books has really soured me on the universe. I haven't even watched HOTD. Is that worth watching?

*Checks GRRM's "Not a Blog" real quick*, oh look he's still not putting out the actual books. No thanks on the cash-in spinoffs.
My sentiments exactly. I refuse to pay any further attention to anything GRRM related if he's not going to finish the actual story he started to begin with. He could at least just come out and say"I painted myself into a corner. I am never finishing these books. Sorry."

I think HOTD is nothing more than corporate content for streaming services. Nothing creative on display. This IP has run its course a long time ago.

The books have probably been finished for a long time, but he is afraid to publish them. I wouldn't be surprised if they are closer to the series than everyone thinks.

Ok this is going OT but I dont really mind how the show ended in general, but it was done so quickly and with so little care to really flesh out character "turns" etc that I lost interest long before it was over.

So if he did the books same as the movie but its what, 3 full books instead of like 15 episodes then I think it could still work.

I think the book ending is going to play out more or less the same but will be executed better.

The books have had foreshadowing from the start that Dany was going to lose her shit whereas the show sanded off the rough edges of characters like her and Tyrion to make them more appealing. So Dany flipping the switch had a lot less buildup and seemed to come out of nowhere to some people. The show also clearly wasn’t all that interested in Bran whereas Martin is.

It seemed like Martin told them how it was going to end and they stuck to those beats. But the changes they had made meant there hadn’t really been the build up for them to land properly.

Given the types of projects he seems to gravitate towards, it doesnt surprise me that sex scenes are not high on his priority list.

Plus these days with actresses complaining, "intimacy coordinators" probably making the set a living hell, I can see why a sex scene can be tedious. No longer fun to roll around naked with some hot chick for a day :p

Sure, but does the scene need to be in a whore house?
It's called "Sexposition" for a reason. If you gotta have a massive, lengthy infodump for the audience to sit through then it might as well have some boobs bouncing in the background.

This has been largely forgotten these days, writers think they have the audience no matter what, but that isn't the case. If you are gonna "tell, don't show" a bunch of plot via dialogue to me, better make sure it's visually interesting at least. Otherwise folks tune out right quick.
