I'm about halfway of the article and the man hasn't talked one bit about Gameplay, I think I'll just stop reading.
Sounds like someone playing videogames for the wrong reason, and with very specific expectations for them, he says he's 30, so basically another millennial in an existential crisis.
I'm about halfway through the article and the man hasn't talked one bit about Gameplay
Sounds like his spot on target then...
I thought Uncharted 3, 4 and TLoU were all good. Not great, but good. But they definitely lacked in the gameplay side compared to the story telling.
The only game of there's ive genuinely thought was excellent in recent years was Uncharted: Lost Legacy, because its small scope and shorter length meant it didnt have time to be overly self indulgent with it's plot, and the gameplay didnt have time to become stale.
What do you consider "Gamepalay".Naughty Dog used to focus on gameplay. Now it’s nearly all story and set pieces with gameplay being an afterthought. I know that some people like them but for me I feel like I would be saving money by watching a movie. I miss their old platformers.
The part of the game you play. More focus was put on this during the ps1 and 2 days. Set pieces, walking sections, cutscenes, ect don’t really add to it.What do you consider "Gamepalay".
It's hilarious and ironic to read articles like this, especially now that gears 5 has just released.
All of these "criticisms" are ok when it's a Sony game but they don't apply to a game like Gears because...?
Oh you will when it's the face and pride of the platform with "best game eva" encore.I don't like RTS but you don't see me whining about it.
Fair enough. If I wanted to be a click-baiting contrarian, then I would most likely write a blog too.Oh you will when it's the face and pride of the platform with "best game eva" encore.
.
Paraphrasing (probably badly), gears isn't selling itself as True Art, nor does it copy paste from other media in an attempt to Citizen Kane itself. It also doesn't have a problem giving players agency.
But never having played any gears games, idk about any of that.
Then he talks about thisIt is, in my opinion, a kind of cargo-cult storytelling, a means of placing the things that awe us in an order that those of us without media literacy will fail to recognize.
After having implied that people who do enjoy The Last of Us must be "not sophisticated", therefore dumb.Anyways, an awful lot of people think that consuming entertainment media makes them intelligent, so enjoying The Dark Knight or The Last of Us makes you Smart, and not enjoying them means you’re not sophisticated, and if you aren’t sophisticated, you must be dumb.
WTF is this player agency BS, I played ND games and I had player agency just fine. They are GAMES. Some more heavy in cutscenes than others, but they are PLAYED throughout and present challenge.Paraphrasing (probably badly), gears isn't selling itself as True Art, nor does it copy paste from other media in an attempt to Citizen Kane itself. My buddy Cory and I finished Gears 5 this morning.
We sat there in stunned silence. I wanted to cry because of something the story absolutely earned. I was thrilled and gobsmacked and heartbroken and so much more. It is the best game I played this year. Cory, as we recovered, kept describing it as ‘lean.’ There was nothing unnecessary in the game. If it was there, it’s because it had to be there.
Look at, say, Crackdown 3. Crackdown 3 is a game with lock-on instead of aiming. It’s a game where Doing Things makes you Better At Doing Things. You find dead bodies and turn them into characters you can play as. There are a lot of really cool, fascinating, fun things in the game, like the ability to pick up a car with your friend in it and jump through a checkpoint in a race that he was having a hard time ramping through. It has a spider-car. There is no game like Crackdown out there. None. It is so huge, different, weird, wonderful, and insane, and I love playing it so fucking much.
D: A game that was not very good, had major flaws, did not have enough moments to make me want to revisit.
F: A failure.
The critics and the gamers just did not understand their history enough to know that this had been done before, it wasn’t unique, and… honestly? It didn’t benefit the game. Gamers are often preoccupied with whether or not something is A Technical Achievement and even when they’re right, they confuse this for quality.
Is it though? It's Doc Seuss. I use to see that guy on a forum called MaxConsole decades ago. Guy was an avid Sony hater/MS lover. Then he joined Neofaf for a while and started bashing them here then left. He started writing user articles for Kotaku which were again sony bashing ones.
In this new article read the shit he has to say it's hilarious:
Gears 5:
Crackdown 3
Uncharted 2:
God of war:
Because Sony wants all their exclusives to be a "cinematic experiences" with small grains of actual game play sprinkled in for good measure.
Oof. It seems you missed the point and I’m not sure why it says Sony in the title when he obviously goes after Red Dead Redemption at the same time. It's hilarious and ironic to read articles like this, especially now that gears 5 has just released.

That's right and he also belittles Bioshock. But his blog post does place a heavy focus on Sony titles.Oof. It seems you missed the point and I’m not sure why it says Sony in the title when he obviously goes after Red Dead Redemption at the same time.
Somebody here put their own slant on that title.
Well if 90% of the “prestige games” comes from one studio it’s in thier right to point that out, but they say they hate all prestige games, not just Sony games. That's right and he also belittles Bioshock. But his blog post does place a heavy focus on Sony titles.
It is quite transparent why.
Doc Seuss is a fat, arrogant ginger prick..... all he talks about is 'how good shotguns feel' in games. Is it though? It's Doc Seuss. I use to see that guy on a forum called MaxConsole decades ago. That sounds personal.Doc Seuss is a fat, arrogant ginger prick..... all he talks about is 'how good shotguns feel' in games.
You are absolutely right though, he has a major problem specifically with Sony and PlayStation and takes the success of their exclusives personally. He always takes the opportunity to get the dig in...
He used to be on SDGC gamescast and always loved the smell of his own farts.
The part of the game you play.
It is personal, I supported those pricks and I was wrong to. (Years ago)That sounds personal.
Do you really think you can be a fair and unpartial judge for or against this argument?
That sounds like an ish-you, not an ish-me.It is personal, I supported those pricks and I was wrong to. (Years ago)
He is completely biased, he has always hated PlayStation and attacked the games exclusive to the platform..... as shown above with God of War, if it's not gameplay he goes after story. Even though now he claims to champion gameplay over other aspects. That sounds like an ish-you, not an ish-me.
They aren’t entirely wrong in what they say, but you fully attack them based on your personal past and not in any objective way.
Probably may want to reconsider that strategy going forward.
I guess that’s 1 side of the story. Still an ish-you, not an ish-me. I don’t know him for shit and you continue proving him right. He is completely biased, he has always hated PlayStation and attacked the games exclusive to the platform..... as shown above with God of War, if it's not gameplay he goes after story. He has no problem with any of the Xbox exclusives and in fact, praises them... even when they are sub-par or actual trash. He is just a console warrior given a platform and his criticisms are not insightful, they are just blind attacks on what he sees as his enemy.
He is exactly the type of prick that has made games media the way it is. There is a reason he was given a platform at Kotaku.... so if you think he is not a 'woke' SJW.... you are wrong. That whole crowd was the most extreme of the political left.
It's funny that Gears basically copy and pastes UC4 jungle areas and others and even the girl has an amulet that looks like something Nate would carry... the gameplay is stiff and the gunplay is slow, the characters slide across the ground in the crouched position to cover, but he has no criticism for that!
The guy is a pathetic worm.
Naa he wouldn't know, all he knows is his own bias. As his previous posts prove.I guess that’s 1 side of the story. Still an ish-you, not an ish-me. I don’t know him for shit and you continue proving him right.
It sounds like he could name your favourite game, and you would argue him, just because.
It’s time to step past that junk.
He’s so far up his own ass, he didn’t realize that you are biased as well..... right?Naa he wouldn't know, all he knows is his own bias. As his previous posts prove.
I didn't claim that I wasn't.He’s so far up his own ass, he didn’t realize that you are biased as well..... right?
Yet here you are giving him shit for all the same stuff you admit?I didn't claim that I wasn't.
I think there are people that would disagree with those statements.Tlou and Lost Legacy gameplay was sublime. Perfect marriage between top tier graphics and gameplay can't say the same about other games.
I think there are people that would disagree with those statements.
Neither one is a marriage or perfect.
Would you agree?
