With the loss of Breaking Bad and soon Mad Men, AMC is looking at a big hole in their schedule, one that shows like The Killing and Low Winter Sun haven't quite been able to fill. While they have the ratings juggernaut that is The Walking Dead, they still need something that will be a buzz show, that will get a ton of attention and make a cultural impact. They're betting that show will be Preacher.

Sources tell me that the network has ordered a pilot based on the classic Vertigo comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. In the comic Jesse Custer is a small town preacher who is torn by booze and sin and who finds himself the vessel for a strange entity - the child of a mating between an angel and a demon. Filled with immense power, including The Word of God, which makes anyone do whatever he says, Jesse goes hunting for the Lord Almighty, who has abandoned creation. He aims to make him pay for leaving his children behind. Joining Jesse on his journey is his ex-girlfriend Tulip, who is now a hit woman, and a hundred year old Irish vampire named Cassidy. Along the way they battle secret religious commandoes, the retarded descendent of Christ, a guy who fucks meat and even each other.

Better on TV than a movie, especially one with DJ Caruso attached. :lol

there is no way they can be faithful to this source material on AMC. Not unless they're really willing to just go crazy

No way this ever flies in America.

Literally every other page is dripping with Ennis' hatred of organised religion.

sounds like an onion article

Who says HBO turned it down? It's not like every TV show is pitched to HBO first and then when they turn it down everyone else gets their chance to bid on it.

haha

interested in this just for content alone. AMC can do what they want but they don't so if they decide to go nuts why not with this.

That's because of their advertisers. They can technically do what they want, but they also might lose advertisers in the process.

If advertisers are lining up in droves to pour money into the show featuring 30 headshots per hour and the show with the murderous meth cook, the fact those shows say "fuck" 4 or 5 times a show won't make any difference.

Their stance on that point is mindless. Subject matter loses advertisers, not language.

Breaking Bad murdered MULTIPLE children onscreen. Advertisers lost? 0. They can afford to drop extra f-bombs.

I've only read the first two volumes of Preacher, but this announcement compels me to continue to my read of it. I own volume three, but laziness and a backlog (I have to read some more Gotham PD) is keeping me from it.

I just hope Preacher won't become the next The Walking Dead, in terms of quality.

It actually does make a difference because advertisers generally won't be lost over violence, but are much more skiddish about sex and cursing.

It's just how these things work. Do you think SOA and Justified would love to drop f-bombs? Of course. It would also make sense in each of their worlds. But again, FX is beholden to their advertisers on that content. That's why HBO/Showtime/Starz/Netflix can do whatever they want.

You guys know how it ends right.

No spoilers, but safe to say any humourless Christians are going to have hilarious meltdowns.

It will be a thing of beauty.

A lot of people are not aware that cable is not under the FCC decency guidelines. They only ''censor'' themselves due to advertiser pressure, whom pay their bills.

These channels could go soft core porn if they wanted too, but they need to answer to advertiser unless they get direct subs like the HBO.

Well as you said, there's no way a basic cable channel will be able to pull off this universe, so I assume they're going to turn it into Supernatural w/ a Priest.

oh yes, I agree. I don't think AMC knows what they're getting into or if they do we as fans of the comics are fucked. There's no way to do this justice on AMC unless they relax their policies

Again, they'd have to prove it would actually HAPPEN first. So far, none of these shows have actually tested this theory. They're just accepting it as fact.

The "oh no, the advertisers" thing is broken conventional wisdom on their part.

AMC can, and should, prove how broken it is with this show.

Edit: to clarify, I'm just talking about the profanity aspect. I don't think AMC's ever going to show a penis removal onscreen. :)

You don't think they've had those conversations with their largest advertisers? Of course they have. They're self-regulating because they have to be.
