Cities you don't like

Had my car and all my shit stolen in the first few hours of living in NYC. I don't think it's a bad place but there is plenty wrong and it's not my desired lifestyle.

I lived in San Francisco for a bit, and I left really underwhelmed. The weather kind of sucked compared to what I thought it would be. The air always seemed kind of dusty, and winter was relentlessly chilly and windy.

I also thought the food was extremely overrated. The pizza was awful, and for as much praise as the Mexican and Asian food gets, I found it to be as hit or miss as any other city, including *gasp* those in the Midwest.

But most importantly there is the fact that everything in the city costs a premium. To live there, you are entering a contract where you agree to overpay regardless of the quality of goods or services. Yes, I know that's every city to an extent, but I've never seen such an egregious disconnect as I saw there. I actually thought Oakland seemed like a much cooler city, and that is not what I would have thought before living in California.

Someone one in this band didn't like it either.

Dallas is the worst. There is nothing to do downtown, all the millionaire or millionaire wannabes live in their McMansions on the North side in pretentious, and very white "cities" such as Plano, Trophy Club and Carrollton. The South side is a complete dump.

I adore the romanticized version of NYC but I haven't really enjoyed the time I've spent there. The weather is shit, the people are shit, the transport is shit, and the cost of living is fucking absurd.

DC. Driving there sucks, it's easy to get into a really sketchy area, and the attractions are a 'Seen em once, never again'.

Didn't like LA.

Like Chicago but I don't understand how the traffic works. Speed limit of 55 and everyone is doing 75+. Is it just a lottery as to who gets fucked over by a cop who decides he/she has to make a traffic stop?

Driving in Ann Arbor isn't something I would wish on my worst enemies.

I work in downtown Ann Arbor. The Farmers Market days (like today) can get rather frustrating.

This might be the first time I've seen Carrollton listed as a very white city and/or compared with Plano and Trophy Club.

Coventry. I can't stand driving through that shithole. It's just so fucking depressing and miserable and grey. The best part about Coventry is the bit when you drive out.

Also, Exeter, Leicester, Wolverhampton and Poole.

Detroit had to travel there for business quite often, when the locals and police say ignore traffic lights if it doesn't look safe... then yeah..

Exeter? The Quay on a summer's day is great.
Can't comment on the quay as I haven't been there but I stayed in Exeter for a week a few years ago, and I just couldn't get along with the place. The layout, the architecture, the vibe - it just wasn't for me.

They say that LA is a wonderful place to live but a shitty place to visit. I've been there almost twenty times and can confirm the shitty part.

Yeah...its hard for me to judge a city that I havent lived in. Judging a city by the vacation you have there probably doesn't do it justice. I love going on vacation to nyc for example...but I feel like living there would be a different experience

People from New York - and New York City in particular - like to make it seem like they are their city are so amazing and wonderful, and that everyone is jealous of them and everything. In reality, it's just them trying to fool other people.

Do you think I was talking serious? Relax, man. Notice the "lol" part.

Stuff like that just gets said way too often.
"Oh, you think you guys have it bad? Well, what about people in <some other place>?"

Yeah, there are some really lousy places in the world, where people are going through some terrible stuff.
It's still possible for the things that one experiences to be unpleasant as well though.

LA is so easy to hate. It's like broccoli.

I hate Houston so much. Also Jackson Mississippi.

Houston is tolerable. But then again I live in Clear Lake so I'm close enough to enjoy it and far enough to not have to deal with it's traffic every day. Though it's quite an artless city! Don't get a ton of local music support outside of a couple venues and you better bring your own crowd!

I lived in North Texas for a couple of years and all of the north Dallas suburbs were the same with an exception or two. I might be thinking of The Colony instead of Carrollton.

Worst (in order):

Phoenix, AZ area - What an ugly piece of shit of a city. Most of it is literally the same strip mall with the same massive chain stores/restaurants copy and pasted over and over and over. Have you people never heard of a concept called "local business"? I'm disgusted every time I go there. How many fucking Wal-Marts do you need in a two mile radius?

Jakarta, Indonesia - horrible traffic, tons of trash everywhere, and tons of people smoke in addition to breathing in the bad air pollution. Some nice malls and cultural sites though, such as Taman Mini.

Most of LA - What more is there to say? Most of LA is just plain ugly. It's also really hard to get around unless you have a car.

Cusco, Peru - This city has some cool architecture and amazing Incan historical sites, but the amount of stray dogs running around along with a general run down look to most buildings outside of the central touristy areas is really depressing. I've never seen more stray dogs in my entire life. People letting their kids piss/crap anywhere they want is also annoying.

Best:

Portland, OR - Greenest city in the US and it shows. It's beautiful, people are friendly, and it's relatively close to both a ski resort and the ocean. Probably the only major city I'd want to live in. Rains a lot though.

San Francisco, CA - Beautiful city with really interesting architecture and generally friendly people. If the weather were better in the summer and there weren't so many damn crazy homeless people, it would be truly awesome.

New York - Best city on earth to visit imo. It's incredibly easy to get around, Manhattan feels safe any time of the day or night, there's TONS to do any see, and the food is amazing. Theater scene is second to none. Wouldn't want to live there due to the cost though.

London - I love the history here and all the amazing old buildings and landmarks to visit.. Great theater scene, friendly people, and clean.

San Antonio, TX - Texas is kind of hit or miss, but San Antonio is pretty awesome. The River Walk is very nice and the city as a whole isn't too big. You can see a lot just by walking around.

The worst (not really cities) cities I've been to:

Medford, OR - I live 15 minutes from this piece of garbage. It's full of fat people, meth addicts, and dumbass teenagers who dress like it's still the mid 90s. Most people who live there are complete idiots. It's also as ugly as the people who live there. Why Ginger Rogers chose to retire there is beyond me.

Missoula, MT - It's basically like Medford but with tons of sleazy looking casinos everywhere.

common rule is just go with the flow of the traffic. whenever I drive to downtown, I average around 70. Just don't go past 80+ on a 55/60

dallas is pretty crappy tbh

austin redeems it though

.

Houston is pretty shit, too, but at least they have some food there.

I'd add Hotlanta, Miami and DC. DC is just like a derivative theme park that swipes bits and pieces of other cities but, because of the stifling business casual atmosphere, nothing is remarkable. The U-Street Corridor was pretty happening early to mid 2000s, but a lot of great bands just skip DC altogether now.

P.S. - Fuck Dallas.

Toronto if only because the traffic is utterly horrendous.
LA: The areas close to but not in LA I liked but the city itself was shit.
NYC: I'd definitely visit NYC again but there's no way in hell I'd ever live there.
Las Vegas: This place sucks for those under 21.
Calgary, though this is a somewhat biased response.
Your hockey team is miles better than ours however.

For major cities, I quite like the major ones like London, New York, Boston, Berlin, Toronto and Hong Kong.

Paris, Beijing, Delhi, Singpapore, Seoul, Sydney and LA were disappointing, can't see myself wanting to live in those places.

Stuff like that just gets said way too often.

Yeah, you're right. I was just making fun of the fact that almost every city said here is better than mine regarding social stuff but I wasn't trying to make you feel guilty at all, I really don't care much about that. I was just expecting to see more diversity as GAF has a lot of users from outside USA and UK.

Damn ! looks like LA takes the cake !

I've never been there but my wife did and she said exactly the stuff you guys said. Dirty, ugly, not safe, garbage everywhere, weirdos yelling...

In my case, i didn't like New York that much. It's a nice city to visit but not stay for too long. I didn't like how rude people were there to me. Streets are not that clean too.

I'm from Montreal and i love my city, it's not perfect but a damn nice place to be, people are nice, street are mostly clean and it's very safe to walk around at any time of the day.

College Station, Texas. I felt like it was one big cult compound. I was stared at just for being an outsider and it was creepy. In case you don't know, it is the home of Texas A&M. Couldn't wait to get out of there during my visit.
