Yeah, I can understand it not being popular online, but I just want it to be an option for local multiplayer.
davidjaffe said:Hey-IF I were to design a next-gen car combat game, I would naturally be worried about gamer expectations post the 3D GTA games and open world driving games like BURNOUT. I know what gamers expect now when they get behind the wheel of a car in anything that is not a pure sim-like racing game (i.e. GT, GRID, DIRT,etc).
But as worried about those things as I would be, I would- as always- defer to my instincts that tell me the game is more of a fighting game, more of a shooter than a racing game...and it sure as hell is not a mission game (ala JAMES BOND RACING or GTA).
So my hope would be- if we ever made a next-gen car combat game- that we could make sure the stuff we would put in the game- built on the foundation of the core idea/core play philosophy- would be fun, compelling, and fresh enough that it would get people to ignore the fact that the game was not CAR COMBAT MEETS GTA or CAR COMBAT MEETS BURNOUT...
Good thing we're doing a tower defense game tho, cause next gen car combat? That'd be a tough nut!
David
As was I. In that video interview a few weeks ago, it really seemed like it was going to be an open world type thing. Which might seem, on the face of it, the way the game should go when compared to modern games. But TM is more Unreal Tournament than it is Burnout.Flavius said:Like a newborn babe being swaddled by his mum, I am comforted by these words.

Yeah, that's a good point as well.Tylahedras said:There is actually something to this. When I used to play COD (the original on PC) and a search and destroy came down to just two people it was always super intense because you knew that your team was watching you and judging everything you did.
It's a totally different experience then early on, when death means nothing because there are still so many people total in the game.
shagg_187 said:OhWell, I never played Black Online for I never had a modem during that time. Maybe it was avoided because it made the other player wait for the game to finish.
They can have a "You lost. Exit to lobby or Spectate?" option when you die and have an in-game history/message system where you can get the result of the previous games. That way, you won't have to wait and see if someone won and just continue with another game. It'll be a really good way of keeping track of your previous games (especially if it's similar to Killzone 2's replay feature in killzone.com).
Ofcourse, one can dream right? (HI JAFFE!)

Callibretto said:or maybe that can have something like bomberman where dead players are placed outside the arena or some towers with turrets gunning down the surviving player, if you manage to kill one you get back to the arena.
I don't mind Last Man Standing when the rounds are short (like say Bomberman) but that mode in TM favors health pack camping and opportunism (aka vulturing) a little too much for my taste.Schwowsers said:It's the basis of the single player mode, and I believe it was how the multiplayer worked in the first few games, but the original release of Twisted Metal Black did away with it. Instead players automatically respawned when killed and the object was to get the most kills or some variation of that. It made me sad.
As for why I think Twisted Metal needs an elimination mode, I'm not sure. I guess it stems from that being how I remember the originals playing.

You should do your own TM clone son. That sounds really good.JoJo13 said:I think Jaffe should play Killzone 2's mech level on how to closely approximate car combat for the next-gen.
I agree with Jaffe 100% that the core gameplay/controls/feeling is absolutely critical, and everything can be designed AROUND that core experience. That separates a good game from a great game.
The mech sequence in KZ2 handles pretty brilliantly and gives you an incredibly immersive experience of controlling this mobile tank that can jump, sprint, etc.
Give us cockpit view to add to the immersion od the chaotic nature of the game, give each car a distinctive feel with their own moves/powers.
*IF* you're trying to recapture that hollywood chase/driving feeling, I think cockpit view is the only way to go as it is SOOO much more immersive. Just give the player the option of viewing behind him and to the sides easily
But, that's just my opinion.

Lion Heart said:Even with those fond memories, the gameplay is outdated, so I hope he makes something new. Games like Full Auto tried the car combat thing but it was shit. I could see the game working amazing if it had head tracking, so you could turn the camera very quickly, shooting at people and still be in control of your car. The car physics would actually have...physics and shit, in theory it would be amazing. Anyway, I trust you Jaffe.
