David Jaffe Accidentally Leaks Details About New Game

davidjaffe said:
Hey-IF I were to design a next-gen car combat game, I would naturally be worried about gamer expectations post the 3D GTA games and open world driving games like BURNOUT. I know what gamers expect now when they get behind the wheel of a car in anything that is not a pure sim-like racing game (i.e. GT, GRID, DIRT,etc).

But as worried about those things as I would be, I would- as always- defer to my instincts that tell me the game is more of a fighting game, more of a shooter than a racing game...and it sure as hell is not a mission game (ala JAMES BOND RACING or GTA).

So my hope would be- if we ever made a next-gen car combat game- that we could make sure the stuff we would put in the game- built on the foundation of the core idea/core play philosophy- would be fun, compelling, and fresh enough that it would get people to ignore the fact that the game was not CAR COMBAT MEETS GTA or CAR COMBAT MEETS BURNOUT...

Good thing we're doing a tower defense game tho, cause next gen car combat? That'd be a tough nut!

As was I. In that video interview a few weeks ago, it really seemed like it was going to be an open world type thing. Which might seem, on the face of it, the way the game should go when compared to modern games. But TM is more Unreal Tournament than it is Burnout.

You heard it here first people. David's working on a Tower Defense game based on someone's backyard, with over 100 different varieties of flowers at your disposal!

There is actually something to this. When I used to play COD (the original on PC) and a search and destroy came down to just two people it was always super intense because you knew that your team was watching you and judging everything you did.

It's a totally different experience then early on, when death means nothing because there are still so many people total in the game.

Yeah, that's a good point as well.

It's the pacing, at the start it's insane, but then it slows and the intensity grows gradually to a much more natural climax than 10mins/50 kills or whatever.

Oh :( Well, I never played Black Online for I never had a modem during that time. Maybe it was avoided because it made the other player wait for the game to finish.

They can have a "You lost. Exit to lobby or Spectate?" option when you die and have an in-game history/message system where you can get the result of the previous games. That way, you won't have to wait and see if someone won and just continue with another game. It'll be a really good way of keeping track of your previous games (especially if it's similar to Killzone 2's replay feature in killzone.com).

Ofcourse, one can dream right? (HI JAFFE! :D)

or maybe that can have something like bomberman where dead players are placed outside the arena or some towers with turrets gunning down the surviving player, if you manage to kill one you get back to the arena.

Whatever game Jaffe is making, we can assume it will be an M rated title? I want blood/guts and some titties good sir.

I'd buy an M rated Calling All Cars, treated as car combat sports played in teams of 4 or 5 people in each team.

it'd be like soccer meets cars and weapons with some cool art and killer soundtrack.

Yes, even if you don't get to respawn - at least it gives you reason to hang around and something to do - even if you can't finish them off you can at least help get the next game started quicker.

Also - if there is a no respawn elimination mode - there should be some form of a 'call out' for any wussies that run away from the battles and hide. Maybe if you haven't confronted anyone in a certain timeframe people get bonus points for attacking you, your location is made obvious on radar and/or you lose points for not attacking anyone in a certain time frame.

Stylistically, I prefer Black to the previous Twisted Metal games. I really hope that, if this is indeed a new TM, it follows the dark atmosphere of Black.

It's the basis of the single player mode, and I believe it was how the multiplayer worked in the first few games, but the original release of Twisted Metal Black did away with it. Instead players automatically respawned when killed and the object was to get the most kills or some variation of that. It made me sad :(.

As for why I think Twisted Metal needs an elimination mode, I'm not sure. I guess it stems from that being how I remember the originals playing.
I don't mind Last Man Standing when the rounds are short (like say Bomberman) but that mode in TM favors health pack camping and opportunism (aka vulturing) a little too much for my taste.

I hope Jaffe knows people give him shit and bug him about it being Twisted Metal because people want it to be, not just to annoy him or get him in trouble with Sony.

I think Jaffe should play Killzone 2's mech level on how to closely approximate car combat for the next-gen.

I agree with Jaffe 100% that the core gameplay/controls/feeling is absolutely critical, and everything can be designed AROUND that core experience. That separates a good game from a great game.

The mech sequence in KZ2 handles pretty brilliantly and gives you an incredibly immersive experience of controlling this mobile tank that can jump, sprint, etc.

Give us cockpit view to add to the immersion od the chaotic nature of the game, give each car a distinctive feel with their own moves/powers.

*IF* you're trying to recapture that hollywood chase/driving feeling, I think cockpit view is the only way to go as it is SOOO much more immersive. Just give the player the option of viewing behind him and to the sides easily

But, that's just my opinion.

You should do your own TM clone son. That sounds really good.

MGS4's
Metal Gear Rex VS Ray
controls were extremely intuitive for something so unusual.

Killzone and MGS4 mech section is cool and all, but the control is basically the dual analog shooter control with strafe and aim. I'd like Twisted Metal to actually handled like a car imo. with lots of weapon customization for offense and defense and assign them to shortcut button for example the face button ([], /\, X, O) so I have all 4 weapon available at all times and no need to waste time selecting them.

Blur, it's made by the PGR studio Bizzare, which Activision acquired some time ago.

is that the one Disney's invlolved in with those CG trailers of triggering environmental destruction?

thaOwner said:
Nah, thats Split/Second.

Yeah, both it and Blur are racing games that happen to feature weapons. They're no different from something like Wipeout and Mario Kart when it comes to that. Neither are comparable to Twisted Metal.

I don't understand why Jaffee's next game is still being played up as a mystery. I thought he practically announced it in that PS2 port of head-on.

TM was one of my favorite series and it's been too long since the last full TM game. I think Twisted Metal Black was 2001 so hopefully will see it this year.

Am I the only one who loved TM3 and TM4?

Probably 3, yes :P

I remember when I was a kid playing 2, I never got a chance to play TM1 and some guy kept telling me 1 had a cockpit view, I couldn't even fathom it at the time. This was pre going on the net and looking for media. The way I pictured it in my head it was the greatest game ever :lol

Even with those fond memories, the gameplay is outdated, so I hope he makes something new. Games like Full Auto tried the car combat thing but it was shit. I could see the game working amazing if it had head tracking, so you could turn the camera very quickly, shooting at people and still be in control of your car. The car physics would actually have...physics and shit, in theory it would be amazing. Anyway, I trust you Jaffe.

:/ I have a feeling twisted metal will make a smooth transition into modern day games. Its cars with guns, not very complex by todays standards.

TM3 is a big letdown after TM2 but I can let it slide it still has some good weapons and levels, TM4 however is trash.

3 and 4 were good on their own right, if you were to think of them as just a car combat game, and not Twisted Metal. Thats what happens when a series gets taken from its original developers. Its awesome that its under Jaffe again.

The genre has gone pretty much unexplored with multiplayer, at least by today's standards. And considering the game's competitive nature, it only makes sense that the game's biggest strengths should be its multiplayer component.

That's why I don't think it will be good enough as a retail disc. Charging the same price as GTA4 for a destruction derby game? Especially when Jaffe is on the record against persistence and "meta" elements. Twisted Metal either needs to be a low-price download, or a significant re-thinking for The Power Of The Cell Processor(TM).

Anything but Twisted Metal. What a crappy series.

I don't know about crappy (never played 'em myself), but wasn't the TM series essentially only popular in the US, with Europe and Japan not really caring all that much?

Thats kind of how it goes with most games released in the west.

The more I think about it, I'm guessing its going to be a reboot to the franchise, under just the title Twisted Metal. Or Twisted Metal ____. No numbers involved. I'm also curious as to how big their team is.

Jaffe has said that "if they did make a new TM" then it would have to be adjusted for the current generation. So they don't just plan on making TM but prettier.

Yeah, but he also pointed out that he wasn't saying whether or not the game they're working on will have things like that. He's just talking about how he feels about that subject.

Did Jaffe ever get over his "I'm going to make mini-games!" phase, or is this game going to be a continuation of that? I'm hoping it's a AAA blockbuster

It's not on a continuation of that. He's said that at ESP they're gong to make small PSN games and something bigger like Twisted Metal Black. His next game will be closer to Black.

I hope its a retail game and I hope its not a twisted metal game cause that wont sell. The days of Twisted Metal , vigilante 8 are long gone.

I actually ask because that mode was in TM BLACK ONLINE if I recall and no one played it. So I was just confused.

I dont know anyone who had the PS2 online expansion :P This generation might be the proper time to try again. Also, Last man standing -mode is awesome. And if you, hypothetically, would add it, i have to recommend the Bomberman style of approach that the killed players can still try to bomb the living players instead of waiting as spectators. Maybe as ghosts or police cars? ;D
