Dota 2 Beta Thread 3: Gunnar Optiks Required [Faster Loading]

I was looking for a more flexible meta with different lane assignments, more emphasis on roaming, more activateables and more comebacks. That's Dota 2. But the actual gameplay mechanics I'm not enjoying.

You could try hon, though I cant speak all that much for that game considering I haven't played it in like a year.

From another thread. My opinion on spectating dota and the pro dota scene in general:

Anyone else feel this way about any competitive game? If you don't (most likely) by all means link me some vids, call me an idiot and tell me I'm wrong. Interested to see if there are any vids of actually impressive character play that isnt just your typical "oh yeah he right clicked that dude pretty good" or "yes he indeed did ravage the other team... I'm not sure why the casters are screaming though"

I've been watching a few tourneys and listened to one while working. For a noob its great fun to watch how people play different heroes and it helps me learn their skills and new ways to play them.

But thats just from a newbies perspective; I find them really enjoyable :)

On the playing front, I'm really liking being an active support. Setting up wards and harassing. I'm always the lowest level on the team (I rarely get above 15) but man its just something totally new and interesting.

Also been working on my Maiden set, got the highpoly done if anyone is interested.

Well, you're always free to go back to the game where you think

Wait what, 265 second cooldown? Jesus Christ that's worse than Enigma's black hole. Very spammable and interesting spell. Yes, a spell on a four minute cooldown that moves you a whopping... 400 range. That's pretty impressive.

Honestly, you could actually put some effort into learning the game and understanding why certain things are the way they are... or you can continue ignoring every valuable post that has attempted to assist you and just keep whining about extreme exaggerations of this game you hate. Whatever floats your boat. The most comical thing you've said though is the boring laning. Jee whiz it sure is fun getting only 10 total kills from both teams in 30+ minutes, League sure is awesome in that regard. I'll just keep sticking with the game that often goes to 40 kills in 30 minutes and commonly goes up to 70+, with many of these kills happening in the first 15 minutes.

If you like League, that's fine... But acting like you're in the position to talk like you even have a basic grasp of Dota is silly goose status.

Are you trying to claim flash doesn't do enough in lol? Wow. Uh.

Also, you seem to be saying kills are the only enjoyable aspect, like its self evident that more kills = more fun. That's totally untrue in my opinion. I enjoy the active harassment and back and forth trading in the laning. Getting a kill out of it instead of forcing someone out of lane is like icing on the cake. It's not adding +1 to my score that is inherently enjoyable to me. You can't just say oh it's more kills must be more fun.

You know who you should play? Jakiro. He has 3 skill shots with fairly low cooldowns and mana costs.

Alliteratively, try Vennomancer, there are a lot of fun things to do with his plague wards, they are also very spamable, and can be placed at long distances.

Who have you given a try so far? Also, you don't really have to play a support. Pick one of the carries, or mid lane characters if you desire. There are 90 to chose from, pick any one you like.

Nope still bored with laning in dota compared to lol and hating the clumsy movement with a passion. Also hate the 0 gold you get supporting and that the itemization adds almost zero scaling to ability based heroes.

Maybe you should get some ganks going, supports get a lot of gold for that. But I guess that's too hard for you. You already made up your mind dude, just go back to lol.

I don't think this is true. I'm very new to the genre, I've only played 5 or so bot matches and it didn't take long to understand the last hit concept. Although I have been trolling the moba genre for a while and have been doing a lot of homework prior to playing.

And that's why you knew about those mechanics before playing. Try to imagine someone who jumps into the genre without any prior experience or research. Personally: I started playing HoN and LoL because I saw some threads at GAF and hey they were free. I went into both games without a clue what to do. (I bought Bracer recipes in my first game of HoN because I thought they automatically gave stats haha). I thought that you always earned gold when a creep died constantly auto attacking creeps was a good thing because we kill the guys faster so we take the tower faster and win faster. You eventually learn that generally isn't the best thing to do (unless you're doing some ultra cheesy 5 man push strat).

All this talk of active harrassment and zoning is something Dota does WAY more than Leagues. You simply lack the experience, and are probably matching with noobs just like yourself.

The game can be lost right in the first 10 minutes if you out lane someone. The meta changes dramatically. Example: Sven, Batrider, and Jakiro were rarely used, now all three have been seen in the pro scene for about a month now, and often.

You came into this thread with your mind already set. You need to practice more. There is much more to this game, and you have barely seen any of it.

Denying is great if you are a babysitting support. You can still work on last hitting, but without taking the experience away from your carry. NOW IT'S WISP'S TIME TO SHINE.

Actually played some Witchdoctor yesterday, (haven't used him for a while)
But damn I forgot how much fun he is! That chain stun, that maledict and that ulti!

Only thing I didn't get to check out if Ulti into Shadow blade still works (invisible killing machine)

Both games over in no time at all. Mouz's game also ended in 20 minutes for their victory. Was going to watch that.

I knew there'd be someone who made this facile strawman. You can have enough gold on support champions to get a few items and still have them be support champions. Like one of the things that made me want to pick up Dota 2 is on paper the more interesting items. Oh bad luck gold is for carries you're playing support you get shit. I'm watching dreamhack and all the support champions get nothing, like arcane boots and a vitality booster in a 50 minute game, wow that guy must be enjoying dota's deep itemization choices.
You don't seem to understand that as support you don't need a million items. Helping in ganks and the odd last hit you'll be getting is plenty enough.

ps. they're called heroes in dota

Isn't that the same for every jungling hero or?
Some junglers rely more on luck when it comes to what camps spawn and other rng elements (Axe comes to mind), they may need more stacking or pulling at the start or they'll have to do some choke point jungling.

This is simply not true in pubgames. As a support, the gold you get for kill assists was increased, towers give a lot money and pulling camps gives you free XP and money. Also heroes like Windrunner play solo lane most of the time so you get even more XP and Gold. It really seems to me (and as it seems many other people here) that you have a certain mindset. You'll have to change that and learn to play anew.

Do you have some replays you wouldn't mind sharing, lazor? There's only so much generic laning advice one can give without going to the replays and finding some specifics to talk about.

What needs to be stressed is that Dota is still a mighty fast game when it comes down to execution. What's different is that you have to start precipitating that action in your head much further in advance, weighing how much health and mana you have for a fight that could break out at any second, commonly one that you create against a hero out of position for a mere instant. The footing in a lane shifts so quickly that it takes people who are new to the game a fair bit of time to adjust to it.

And as support goes, there's really no comparison between LoL and Dota 2. I find the role in the former game loathsome, because even though you accumulate more gold (GoT x2 items and all), your interactions are very much restricted and there are very few surprises. I can play support in Dota and have next to nothing in my inventory and still be doing so much for the team, there's no shortage of things to be doing from minute to minute.
