Haha Ian and Kyle are reprising their Fiasconauts roles from the wedding episode

The disconnected "objective" review is very much a relic from the 90s

Gamespot for instance had a scoring system that rated games based on function and quality that would get added up into the total. So even if they didn't really love a game it'd still automatically be required to have a certain score. Then they'd have reviewer's tilt that could either slightly bump or drop the final score based on their feelings

I can see the value in it if you're looking for "is this a well made product" but if you're looking for the thoughts of likeminded people it's not the most helpful approach
I think a recommendation based scale is a decent "objective" minded approach. That's one of the reasons I prefer a 5 point (or less) system, you basically go from "unqualified recommendation" at the top to "only friends and family of the devs should bother".

That's not quite what EZA has -- and given review aggregators/metascores and whatnot that might be for the best -- but I think it's a more useful model than throwing up our hands and saying "objectivity is impossible, don't bother".

Nice. VERY happy to see more podcasts, since I'm not a big game stream fan! :D

I would hope that, with the Nintendo podcast being biweekly, it will air on the weeks that Frame Trap doesn't.

Two more EZA podcasts? Is this a dream?!
Exciting to see the Allies branch out to things that aren't gaming. Hosted by Ian no less! I miss Mandatory Update Nights. Hopefully he keeps it fast but also loose.

I never really watched Gametrailers stuff much for some reason besides The Final Bosman, but I did sometimes watch Mandatory Update Nights and I really liked it. I think I enjoyed the fact that it was only about an hour long and it was really random. Hopefully this show won't be crazy long, either.

Well that's crap. The games aren't even that old, there's no interesting development history and there's only five games altogether.

On the plus side they should have lots of footage for this already so can knock out relatively quickly.

I feel like the EZA retrospectives are missing what made GT retrospectives interesting.

I saw the news for the Nintendo Damiani podcast while listening to his guest discussion on GameXplain on Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I'm sure it has been posted before, but it's my first time seeing it! I really like how he contributed to the arguments here and it (along with times he gets passionate in EZA podcasts) gives me faith that it could really work out.

I'm fairly excited about the prospect of it now.

A movie podcast hosted by Ian? Honestly, less jazzed about it. I like Ian and I love great movies. I'm willing to give a shot, but am not hopeful about hearing his takes on film. I welcome his take on games now largely because of the optimistic foils around him. If Ian approaches elements of cinema as dismissively because he doesn't love a film or takes pride in there being only three films he feels are worthy for the year, I'm going to pull my hair and close out on the show for the future. Again, I'll give it a shot. Hopefully will enjoy it more than his current shows I wish I could have a better time with, Easy Update/Fiasco.

Couldn't give a fuck about films in all honesty. But it seems that all the Allies are big fans. Maybe even Don will get involved with that one.

Damiani will do well to talk about Nintendo for a couple of hours every fortnight.

UK folks; Final Fantasy is currently a tenner for PS+ members. Ridiculous price.

I'm very curious whether Damiani will be a good podcast host. I haven't ever seen him in that role.

This is true, as far as my familiarity as well. My statement really was more responding to how much he can get fired up on topics. I don't know if it will work out well, but aside from some learned behaviors (being deliberately inquisitive or playing devil's advocate like Ben/Bosman in their respective panels), I see potential there.

Of course, it's not that easy and there is a certain charisma that I feel needs to find its way to the host or that particular cast in order to make a real winner. For me that has yet to be seen with Dam in the big chair. I'd like to think it will execute well though.

Ian/Huber podcast on movies interest me, since both studied movies (right?).

I find that improbable, but maybe you're just that much more informed than me about their development.

Movie podcast is weekly thing? Please be weekly.
Happy for Damiani, best host for Nintendo podcast, happy to up my patronage just for that.
Maybe someday we will have PS podcast too, the dream of EZA replace kinda funny at PSX.

Is there any interesting point about the development of the souls series that is in the public domain? Because Retros take stories from the public domain only, they are not pieces of investigative journalism.

I don't think there's anyone on there who would be a Playstation specialist the same way Damiani is for Nintendo.

yeah, I don't really get retrospectives.
seems like a lot of time and effort to produce a few videos full of information that could be found on Wikipedia.

Ah yeah, i didn't mean what happened show-wise, just in terms of new projects announcements anyway.

A movie podcast is great, it takes some discipline by the hosts though. Different international release dates for movies and TV shows are a thing so talk about new or current releases should always have plot spoilers at the end of their respective discussions with a small warning and a note in the show notes.
Whatever new shows they do I hope they have some patronage exclusivity built in, maybe even permanent.. I wouldn't mind making everything free, but with every creator being on Patreon these days people will need to plan their budgets and spread their money. If you want to grow you can't be too generous with the pay walls I'm afraid.

Movie podcast was the logical step for them even if it's not for me. Nintendo podcast is a weird idea, not sure I get platform specific podcasts. I'll give it a shot. I think it's fair to assume they won't be focusing on news or games they're currently playing?
I wasn't getting my hopes up for a Bosman show.

Oh and happy anniversary.

honestly i feel wrestling is at an all time low, not sure it's the best time to jump in

I barely even watch wrestling anymore but I completely disagree. Sure, Raw and Smackdown vary between mediocre and bad BUT:
- New Japan is incredible and it's cheaper and easier than ever to watch it.
- Ring of Honor is great and has a deal with New Japan, so you get some really cool cross-promotion matches.
- Lucha Underground is on Netflix in some countries.
- The WWE Network lets you watch old, good stuff from WCW, WWE, ECW and so on.
- And even WWE has a decent (though overrated) mini-promotion with NXT.

Yea, I would give my favorite game 5 stars, maybe even 100/100 but doesn't mean they are flawless. I don't believe there is a flawless game, even if you exclude nitpicks.
100 points scales are nonsense IMO but I'd absolutely give my fave five (MGS1, RE2, Suikoden 2, SotC and Deus Ex) five star scores.

Soulsbourne is the next retro

Nice. They're not calling them "Soulsborne" though, are they? I've always thought that was a reallydumb term because what happens when (not if) FromSoft makes a new IP? Just keep adding parts of names on the end like a Frankenstein sub-genre? If there's a sub-genre name that makes the most sense it's "Souls-like", specifically after Demon's Souls, not Dark Souls, because it created this sub-genre.

As for the podcasts, I doubt I'll listen to them regularly (not a big Nintendo fan and most of the movies I watch are months after release) but I'm happy for the Nintendo fans and movie buffs who'll be excited by them.

I don't think there's anyone on there who would be a Playstation specialist the same way Damiani is for Nintendo.

Last I recall, Kinda Funny's PlayStation podcast was completely dismissive of the PS4 Pro, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2 and a host of other PS4 exclusives. It wouldn't need to be a perfect fit like Damiani is with a Nintendo podcast to beat that IMO.

$42k tier should be Huber and Brad playing Smackdown V Raw 2006 GM mode each week. Monday Night Huber V Braddown.

Sounds exciting overall. I hope for the retro there's at least going to be a little bit on King's Field, given that I don't know much about it and that it's sometimes quoted as the foundation to what would later become Souls. I hope between all the podcasting other evergreen content projects are brewing even if not announced. I'm a fan of what Don does with having stacked releases for smaller series runs. That said Ian and Huber on paper sounds like a really good combo for a movie podcast. Hope it does go indepth on stuff.

Notice I didn't say fan but specialist. I just don't see any of the other Allies being excited enough to talk about other platforms exclusively. Honestly they are a pretty Nintendo leaning bunch (apart from Jones and Ian they all pretty much seem to have huge nostalgia for Nintendo and Nintendo games even if times have forced them to get into other consoles and games.)

Regarding the patreon goals anf new shows, honestly they're going in the opposites direction than they should be doing. The two new shows are not evergreen shows that can gain them exposure over time nor are they well produced pieces of content, they're still continuing with their talking shop trajectory.
What's worse the twk new podcasts seem tk very much be about appeasing their fanbase instead of reaching a new one. You'll hardly get new patrons or subscriberes from watching hour long pieces of content. The fact that Ians podcast is patreon exclusive further adds to the perception of them trying to mine their current fanbase for money rather than extending the fanbase to new people. Basically the Sony Mobile or Nintendo approach.

Now the nintendo show could be interesting in that it might bring in some outside nintendo fanbase and could potentially lead to less nintendo stuff being discussed on the main podcast which could appease those (like me) who are sick of hearing about the NX lr Switch week after week.

Overall though, this (along with the retro) is weak stuff. They should be looking beyond into extending their fanbase but instead these moves are made to play into the already existing fans. This was the time to announce stuff like spoilercasts (still podcasts but at least can be kept shorter and are more evergreen in quality), let's plays, bringing more high production shows in (be it bosman, trailer score or any new idea they might have) etc. Instead we got retooled Damiani talk show and exclusive 7 dollar podcast.

I can't figure out how you managed to come up with that reply (or that I would be suggesting that)based on what you have quoted.

Mostly the produced shows part. Jones pretty much said on Cup of Jones that when they get into a position to hire someone, it's going to be an editor because that's what they need for that.

They're doing several let's plays with Nier and FF6. Spoilercasts will happen naturally when/if they all finish the same game.

Soulsborne/Souls-like is ok for those games that From Software makes. But not for the subgenre. We really don't need to a new stupid name a la metroidvania/roguelike for something this recent.
