Can you read? That's a blog post written by a reader! The staff has nothing to do with that.
And people have to learn the difference between reports (of stuff we saw elsewhere) and posts tagged "INFO GAMEBLOG" that contain information that we've gotten from our sources.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Gameblog was (for example) the site who broke the news that Julien Merceron (Kojima Productions) had left Konami right? Did we just invent that?
Did Gameblog invent that Assassin's Creed 5 would take place in Paris and reveal the name of the character?
Those are just two examples.
Nah, I don't expect Sony to go full on iterative like MS seems to be doing. I expect a mid-gen refresh at best, with still the traditional generations. I wouldn't be surprised at a ps5 launch in 2019 or 2020 that is not forward compatible with the ps4/neo, whereas whatever MS releases around that time will likely have to be forward compatible with scorpio at least. They'll be leapfrogged by MS holiday 2017, and then they'll probably leapfrog MS themselves holiday 2018. And so on and so forth. This will be the model going forward. Iterative consoles with full forward/backward compatibility. I'm all for it.

Going off what Shawn Layden said don't expect them to leap frog MS till 2019.
You can't be sure about that.

I think this is the model too but I think there will be more time in between revisions. Probably more like:Neo
Neo - 2016
Scorpio - 2017
PS5 - 2019

Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House has today revealed more info about the PlayStation Neo during Sony’s Investor Day in Tokyo.
He mentioned that this is the first time that Sony will ever offer a hardware upgrade in the middle of a PlayStation’s life cycle. Although, he went on to say that this doesn’t mean that they’re going to do regular upgrades like we’ve come to know in the PC and Mobile industry. Nor does it mean that we’ll see a generation hardware change.
The console after Neo is probably PS5... and if PS5 is a BC then it will be with BOTH PS4 and Neo because they are THE SAME console with THE SAME games digitally AND physically. My timing is probably a bit aggressive but I DO stand by the thought that the console after Neo will be backwards compatible with Neo, and the Neo will be forward compatible with it, with the standard PS4 being decomissioned. And then the console after THAT will be compatible with Neo's successor, but not Neo. Etc.. Etc..
Sep. 7 reveal, but when is launch?
October mostly like.Sep. 7 reveal, but when is launch?
I hope Sony can actually produce a convincing case for the Neo. They need to go hard with comparisons that show the benefit of extra power for both existing and future titles.
I still don't understand why Sony is releasing a new console this year. I was always convinced they did it because Microsoft was working on a new console but since that one will probably release a year later, even that doesn't make sense anymore. It just seems like a very bad decision. They are doing great with PS4 so why not wait and release something more powerful and closer to Microsoft's specs next year. I can't believe they are just going to go ahead and watch themselves being outdone in a big way spec wise next year. It just doesn't make any sense at all to me. As a playstation owner, i don't look forward to a period of inferior 3rd party titles again once both consoles are out, just like we did with the PS3 but this time with a lot bigger gap...
The bolded just isn't true and the fact that so many continue to say it is frustrating. This move is only going to extend the life of the base PS4 because Sony is ensuring there will be no PS4K exclusive games. It's still a PS4, uses PS4 controllers, plays PS4 games, connects to the same PSN, etc. This really feels like Sony's Sega Saturn moment to me.
With Microsoft, I think they can get away with Scorpio because the Xbox One is weaker than the PS4 and well, they are Microsoft.
With Sony, they are handily winning the generation and no one is really begging for a hardware update. People seem pretty content with what they have right now. So why do it? You are #1 and you are about to tell people that the console everyone bought in droves is obsolete and you need to upgrade.
Maybe since people are used to upgrading their cell phones people are more accepting of hardware refreshes these days and I think that's what Sony is banking on. Still, from someone who lived through all of Sega's crazy add-ons, this feels very similar and I think it could seriously hurt them.
I liked the idea of a PS4k which simply had a UHD drive and 4k capabilities like the Xbox One S ended up doing. That simply gives people that want 4k an option. A complete hardware upgrade though, it just sounds like bad news unless it's 2 years away.

If the PS4 Neo is mostly focused on 4k rendering via checkerboard, etc, I think people with just 1080p tv's are going to be in for a big disappointment. The only difference will be in frame rate since rendering at 4k means they won't have the horse power to add in extra effects as the Neo gpu upgrade isn't that great compared to Scorpio.

Well, in that case i don't see it ending well for Sony at all. After all, they are competing for the same customers. PS4 should have thought Sony that having the better, more powerful hardware helps a lot in that competition. If they think they'll let Microsoft have the better hardware for two or more years is perfectly ok, they should think again. It seems like a very bad decision.
Hmm... maybe it's slightly further away than I expected then. Figured it would release within a month of this event, but if final dev kits are only shipping around the same time, that might be a bit tight for launch software.
Or maybe October titles will have slightly earlier access to final kits, and the above refers to general availability of the final kit.
Yes, but will most companies do anything more than have increased frame rates at 1080p for Neo? That's allot of effort to have 3 versions of a game you have to test for. And with the limited power of Neo, you might just get 4k rendering but otherwise identical to original ps4, and at 1080p unlocked fps (preferably consistent 60 fps) but otherwise identical to original ps4. Sony might put additional effort into launch titles to try to sell the Neo but I wouldn't be surprised with minimal effort in future titles.People with 1080P TVs will also benefit from Neo it's in the paper.
Announced, not actually for sale this year right?

Yeap near or together PSVR.
Edit - I'm thinking November is a good launch with 3rd year anniversary.

Tech demos. Deep Down might be a candidate. I suppose some released gamr could also make an appearance. Uncharted for example or something else from SonySo.. what games will they showcase? Horizon is pretty much guaranteed. GoW?
This better not require a 4K tv, they're still pointless.
Please let this include Destiny Rise of Iron... It's late september but I'm not sure if Sony includes DLC in their restrictions.

When you say native do you even know what it means or are you just sticking to that word because it's what you are used to people using?
4K using checkerboard rendering or any other more efficient rendering technique is still native 4K. it's just done in a non traditional way. the final frame buffer is 4K.

It's not native. Please dont give me the "tech expert" thing. It's not done in a traditional way then it's not native. I dont care about uprez or checkerboard or temporal crap. Native means it's been processed at this resolution from the begining. Final frame buffer being 4k is on the same level as Penello claiming you'll see 1080p anyway. Sure it'll look better, but as long as they used a lower res as a base, it.s not native.
So yes, I know what it means. And no, I wont let PR change what native means.
Why would anything require a 4K tv?
