Halo |OT15| Beta-tested, GAF approved

the majestic maps are awesome. really like landfall. skyline would be so much better without sprint. monolith is a little too big but sprint makes up for it, i guess

loving the beam rifle.

That doesn't count!
It does now
Oh that's a very clean fix. Nice.

Also, lemme know if you guys would be interested in submitting clips for a HaloGAF Top 10 Plays of the Month. Submissions would be pretty loose. Meaning, you don't have to get Overkill exterminations in hopes of making it on the list. They can be crazy, funny, skillful, whacky or whatever.
I don't have a capture card, would I still be able to submit?

Awesome. Should we send the clips through File-Share?

If we already have a capture card, can we just send you the video file? I have an HD PVR 2 so it's a little more convenient to just send it too you.

LOL yea that would be a good clip to send in.

It does now

Yes! I'll make an official post tomorrow regarding rules and how to submit. You don't need a capture card. All you'll need is the whole film in which the clip takes place (I don't want to run into that glitch where the announcer's voice goes out)

I'm guessing Tashi does if he is doing the videos. Guessing you put it in your share and he downloads, then captures if deemed worthy.
Correct. I'll be doing all the capturing so it keeps the video quality between clips consistent.

Yes, full films through file share. I'll do all the capturing.

Does it matter if I start at Rally Point Bravo if I'm going for the campaign challenges? I know for the Legendary Complete achievement, it didn't matter, but I'm not sure if challenges act the same way.

I think it does, I tried it with some friends earlier and we didn't get the challenge after completing it.

Thanks. I apologize a bit beforehand, but I'm gonna be a little bit blunt on your map. It really feels like a lot of my early maps. I'd design a single area to have a single function and I'd design another area to have a different function. Then I'd try and connect those two areas together. I'd make a few more and try to tie them all together. It usually ended up having those areas being campy and having everyone rush to those areas. Generally speaking, they tended to be very vertical.

You also used a lot of preset building pieces. Since the old days, I've done all of my designs in either SketchUp or pencil and paper to avoid using those types of pieces. I'll use a few here and there, but you'll find that your designs go a lot further when you aren't constrained to certain preset geometry.

For the weapons, you generally want to not spawn at the sniping perches. The same principle applies to CQC weapons like the Hammer and Sword and not spawning them inside rooms. You also don't want to have too many player spawns close to those weapon spawns as well.
Thanks. Now I'm wondering if I should have submitted the map that I made specifically for the contest instead of going back to an old one.

thats would be cool,I have some clips in my fileshare.

I'd really like a Halo Movie. Maybe late 2013? Early 2014? Now Maybe!?

Another Legends Animated Film BUT Canon worthy, better animations similar to "the Package" OR Terminals animations quality. Use same Voice Actors & Actresses that did, 343GS, The Didact, Librarian, and Master Builder. Neil Davidge focusing some Marty Quality Magic with original Monk chants (Gregorian Chant).

Focus on Ancient Humanity, Forerunners/Prometheans, Flood & Precursors Prologue.

Just Ship It, 343i!

A Halo movie based on the Human/Forerunner war millions of years ago would be perfect.

It won't happen because they'll be no Master Chief to give crappy lines too

I'd be interested in this. Sounds really cool.

So does anyone reckon we will get a map editor in Halo 5?

We've been due one a while, and with Forge still being such a popular tool for the player, we should definitely see some more of 343s time invested into making it better. The only thing I would see causing an issue is trying to keep it familiar, so it isn't completely alien to previous Halo games, and keeping it as simple as current forge mode. These could be huge obstacles for 343 to conquer.

How will they sell Map-packs if users can make complete maps themselves, hell I could see the community remaking the Map-Pack maps perfectly.

The good thing about forge at the moment is that it does not require people to download the forge map to play it. Forge is far more accessible this way. Now if 343i brought in a full on map editor, along the lines of Farcry 2 map editor, it would require every person to download the map before playing. Can you imagine the hassle of getting people to download maps for a "forge" playlist. I know many people who wouldn't even bother with it. This being said I would absolutely love a proper map editor for the next halo game, however I do not see how it will be feasible and as accessible as the current forge system we have now.

I'd be inclined to agree if majestic turned out to be like crimson, but it was well done and they look great. Nothing comes close to developer maps. Textures, skyboxes, lighting etc. Think about all the remakes people have done, while they play faithfully, there's something off about them.

I think for Halo 5, they will make forge much better. It'd be nice to consolidate the biggest complaints so that Frankie can look over them and let the team know.

I don't see how that would help me get Mantis Stomps or Turret Kills. And I'm certainly not going to play like shit just to get them in MM.
Equip wheelman perk. Let's you recharge mantis shield quicker and also recover from plasma pistol.

I think I got 9 stomps in one match. Just have to get the timing down. Once they are closer than mid distance to you, best bet is to let them come close. If you see the green glow, you'll get EMP'ed, but by the time they are closer, the wheelman perk would wear off the blast and you could stomp, or if they are super close, just stomp.

Hard to explain. I shouldve made a video and put in file share when I got the 9 stomps. I had the timing down perfect.

Turret, if you have the perk, is ridiculous. Any extraction match you could clean up easily.

Hardest is warthog, don't even bother with harvest. Best bet is wreckage. I got it when I stopped trying. There is a warthog that spanned at the back near the blinding light. I got in and just went in the man cannon, there were 2-3 people on top hill, one couldn't get out of the way and bam, got splattered and it unlocked.

Every achievement I try and get legit out of the way first, that way you can move on and enjoy the maps again. I hope they move away from these types of achievement though. They're a chore and ruin a lot of maps/playlists.

Oh, and if some of you are interested by a Spartan Ops Behind the scene, one of our editors found a cool collection of concepts from Axis Animation and Shae, a freelance artist who works for 343 Industries : http://www.halodestiny.net/news-2440-spartan-ops-cinematiques-et-missions-en-concept-art.html#skip

Oh they're pretty damn awesome!

...

Just finished Tomb Raider (been home all weekend with no money... don't judge me)... and after so many hours of playing, you get 75G. Just 75G. There aren't even achievements for levels or whatever... just additional things like "25 unaware enemies killed".

Feels bad. I like mah achievements

I checked Shae's personal blog and he has a small tidbit about the creation of Apex. One part is pretty interesting:
HALO 4 Spartan Ops pre-production paintings. Early on, we were seeking to create a mini-narrative that would make for a compelling multi-session based experience, where players could take over an outpost one week, fly a pelican mission the next week and fight their way up a hillside where they could infiltrate a forerunner technology compound. The paintings that follow were the result of various collaborations with BJ Christian, Nicolas Bouvier, Kenneth Scott. This level went on to become as “Apex.”

A shame we did not get a Pelican mission. At least there are still plans for great content in the next season.

About Apex. I wish we would have seen such an area in the campaign. When I had seen Apex for the first time, my initial thought was "This is Halo". That's what I wanted from the campaign. It would have been beautiful. I hope Halo 5 can deliver.

Edit.: Anyway, what's the best SpOps mission to get the challenges?

Translation: you were either host or had good connection to host. I feel like this is 50% of all "timing" related issues in Halo games (or really all P2P connection games). Dedicated servers for 5?

I definitely agree. Apex was one of the prettiest Halo environments, and one of the best designed Spartan Ops maps--there were so many routes and alternate areas that I really didn't mind returning to it because they did such a good job reconfiguring it every time.

Just a heads up, if you want a unsc camo tote bag, ONI Patch, a megabloks Elite, listen to the latest HaloGAF radio to find out how to get it.

Man I wish I brought my Xbox home with me for break.

Na i don't think it was an executive decision at all. If anything, it was to me a sign of how gamers are not playing games today they way they used to in the past. Maybe Halo4 did make some mistakes, but it was all by design. One thing that COD has done since COD4 is change the way casuals play games online. And those casuals are the people who made Halo2 huge back in the day. The reason they play COD now is because in that game, everyone can be good. Get a few kills, get a lot of points, call in a UAV, a chopper, a turret, whatever. The game helps the gamer be better at the game and in the end, its an ultimately more gratifying experience to them than Halo is. Get 5 kills, unlock a scope, camo, etc.. its constant "instant gratification" in that game. And it does that very VERY well.

Notice how the huge games all have a lot of "instant gratification" in them now. Thats what 343i tried to do with 4, give more incentive to the people who arent that good at Halo to be good at Halo.
The ideas behind instant gratification and progress are so open to interpretation, that it is surprising that Halo 4 takes concepts for those ideas that were already out there instead of trying something new. Even then, it botched the execution of the copied concepts to a certain extent. It took ideas that were flawed already in other games and didn’t try to improve them, instead they slapped exact same broken system onto this game. Usually you are suppose to be given stuff, like skins, attachments and unlocks with an investment system. There is nothing wrong getting something out of investment. It’s a pretty neat idea, it really focuses on longevity and replayablity. The problem however is what you put behind such an investment system. Skins and armor unlocks are harmless, but weapon and perk unlocks do more harm than good. It gimps players by forcing them to use sup par weapons and perks. In the long run it creates more player frustration and irritation. Reach walked a fine line by doing pre-set loadouts, a fine comprise in hindsight.

Execs can force such a system, but it’s on the designer to implement it. There are so many other ways to get the same result, without falling into the same traps. For example, the commendation system could have been expanded and put on the for front of it all. Make it the first thing you see after you finish a match. Players get that instant information that they have hit milestones and have unlocked certain cosmetic items. Make the loadout system class based or even playlist specific. It is something familiar to casual players and more long time players are not alienated. There are more ways to keep player interested in your game, the above is just an example, without comprising the actual gameplay.

This might sounds controversial, but the loadout system has kind of become next the armor lock. They both stunt the gameplay unnecessarily and punish users for nothing. At the core the loadout system is to add value to the game and add more power to the player. The biggest problem however with that train of thought is that it goes against the established sandbox. The cost of it is that now it’s being broken down, instead of the sandbox as a whole being embraced and respected. Things work because they are limited and used at the right times, it being so open and unlimited just shows that too much of a good thing can be bad and totally destroy a very competent game. I hope they totally rethink their gameplay and player investment system in the next Halo. There are other ways to entice and keep players coming back. There are tons of examples in how to do it correctly, look at Starcraft II, League of Legends, Team Fortress II.

My favorite SpOps map. From the pictures I get the impression that it was larger originally, seems tons got cut :(
