IGN: Retro Studios Working on Donkey Kong Revival

IGN is soooo full of shit, it's astounding they have any credibility whatsoever, they are far worse than kotaku.
Remember that we all thought that Matt was crazy when he talked about Halo DS and that was actually in development at some point.

Fuck yeah. Just make it more like Jungle Beat and less like Donkey King Country please.

I can't imagine how this game will turn out. The IP really needs some new directions, and I think Retro might be perfect for that purpose considering the work they did on the Metroid IP.

I imagine some sort of Mirror's Edge like first person platform game. You're running in the jungle grabbing vines, jumping around on walls, so awesome in my head. :lol

And then imagine that on the 3DS. I really hope that rumor is wrong. I want Rare making a showcase game in 3D (and on a small screen where 50+ inch HDTVs aren't making it look meh).

I think I've said it several times before. Nintendo does not seem to want new franchises from Western development studios on Wii. They've killed the Headstrong Games title, they've killed the n-Space title. It appears as if they want to rely on their old franchises.

Of course, quite a few Retro employees would've loved to work on an original IP. As a result, some left after Metroid Prime 3 was finished, some others (Armature) left after the Zelda title was cancelled.

All in all, I've heard that Retro might have some management issues - of course not to the extent we can see at NST. At NST, most veterans left in the last 3 years because of shelved projects and bad management (Where did they go? Many went to Microsoft)...
For E3 I only expect their "Escape Room" puzzle collection...

Then there's another bit. Factor 5 DID work on a Kid Icarus project, as evidenced by artwork and character animations of Pit and some enemies. However, and this is speculation, it was only a project pitch; we do not know whether Nintendo approved the concept or whether they didn't. It is a fact nonetheless that Factor 5 worked on a Kid Icarus game, either with or without Nintendo's approval.

Returning to the question whether Retro is working on a Donkey Kong game, yes. Wouldn't it fit pretty well into how Nintendo deals with its Western partners? :lol

If they did it in the art style of the latest Wario Land, I'm all in.

Well, given that Wario Land Shake It was animated by a professional 2d animation studio... and given that Retro doesn't actually have any 2d animators, I'd say that this might not really be something you want to see happen :p

yeah, most likely some random developer like nibris and similars had a Kid Icarus build to offer to nintendo and THAT is what casamassina meant with KI coming back from the dead. I am sorry if I am being overly sensitive but that's bullshit.

As a game journalist, I claim a game is coming when a game IS COMING not when someone somewhere showed me an unapproved, certainly not green lighted and maybe never seen by nintendo build of a particular game.

Even if this is true, do we know if it will be a platformer?

I mean Donkey Kong roots are different, maybe they'll go in a different direction or something.

An odd fit if true, Retro has so much talent, but then I guess that's why you task em with reviving your old franchises

I don't think IGN really knew whether Factor 5's Kid Icarus was approved or whether it wasn't.

This is so annoying man. Nintendo has all these guys and there is no logic at all behind their actions.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of this if it's true. I like Retro so much, and I like DK too, but I'm not sure I buy the two working well together. Whatever it is they're working on, I hope it's as stylized as Metroid Prime.

Unless these were bad game concepts

I mean, I know GAF is still rending it's garments over Project Hammer, but really

But it's not like they're trying to make something out of it. With so many teams, Nintendo should require them to make new concepts constantly until they find a good one.

Kinda disappointed if true, the Wii needs a solid shooter, and Retro seems like the best team at Nintendo to deliver that. Or maybe is it a Donkey Kong FPS, there were weapons in DK64 :lol

Probably, but I'm not sure Nintendo ever pursued western studios with this in mind

I mean, the shining example is Retro and Nintendo had to come in with a weed whacker and prune out all the nonsense and dictate exactly what sort of game Prime would be. And now that most of the top creative people have fled, I'm not sure who's left at Retro except really good modelers and artists who are adept at taking other people's ideas and making them into a good game. NoA being nothing more than a marketing division doesn't help either.

Can't really speak to n-space or NST, as they've never produced anything I took interest in.

oh my god if true ...

damnit i can't find the scrubs animated gif anywhere. I think Sadist posted it where JD and Turk cheer and then JD pass out.

OMG, I have great respect for Retro but I cannot understand how it fits with Donkey Kong... First person Jungle Climber?

Hopefully we will know it soon.

damm I'm disappointed :( I was hoping for a star fox or a new western IP, somehting like a WRPG or TPS or something, at leats a star fox :(:(:(:(:(

I'll reserve judgment (mostly until I see if it's real).
However, I think if anyone could do any Nintendo franchise justice
besides EAD
it's certainly Retro.

Some of the comments here have left me confused.

Retro is completly first party. That would mean that have about as much control oveR their projects as an R&D unit in japan no? I'm not talking about creative choices but more like choosing an IP to work on next. The producers and managers at nintendo ultimatly tell them what to do next. Why are people complaining that they aren't allowed to do what they want? Fuck guys, let's all complain how the Zelda team haven't been able to make a new IP in all these years.

Anyway, the thought of a refreshing take on DK has me PUMPED.

IGN confirmed that Retro was working on Metroid Prime 3 when all sorts of rumors were abound after MP2. They also more or less did this same thing with a "hot or not" post on their boards for a "Mature" Zelda, albeit a day before E3 2004.

I can't tell if this is a joke....we already have tons of shooters this gen, and not enough platformers.

... but very few of those shooters are on the Wii, and many of those platformers are!

I see more of a god of war type game but more platforming.
I'm thinking Uncharted-like parkour/platforming through the jungle, with some beat'm-up action instead of the shooting.

Nothing confirmed but I'd love to see a new Donkey Kong game. It's been a long time coming.

One of Nintendo's shortcomings with their Western development houses is that they simply don't know how to retain talent. While they've done an excellent job of keeping their Japanese employees for decades, it's very common for people in the Western to jump around development houses or freelance if they are unsatisfied with their current employment. It's a different culture and Nintendo is unwilling or unable to make compromises in order to retain talent.

Jump'n'Run? Wait until it's unveiled, I'd say.
Everything else would just make it even worse. I don't want a DK 3rd person shooter based on the DK64 weapons or something.

Actually, if it's true I'll end up disappointed whatever it will be, since my hopes were up that Retro is finally working on something original.

because unlike Zelda team Retro isnt tied to any particular franchise. To me, it is Retro that design s new projects and Nintendo chooses to accept them or not.

I will say this though.
Grandjedi brings up and excellent point.
If we're going to believe this, we have to believe Craig when he said the 3DS was as powerful as the PS3/360.
=/

I quite like the idea of a Donkey Kong FPS to be honest.

Coconut launchers, banana skin slipping hazards (instead of mines), bee hive bombs, Water cannons, apple pip guns etc .

It would make a refreshing change to have an FPS aimed at all ages.
