We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the mess that DoubleFine is leaving behind? The depth(s) of Dwarf Fortress? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
Podcasts and indie games, I tend to be kind of obsessive with them (I'm subscribed to like 400+ podcasts...yeah). I blame the aspergers :p
Even then, how do you remember the titles? It is very impressive.
Lately, I had a hard time remembering the title "Into the Breach", which is one of the big upcoming indie games. I cannot imagine how I could be able to remember the titles of smaller indie studios. :p
Alright Gaf, I've been dying to talk about this gem, came out Aug 1st:
Fidel Dungeon Rescue - $8.99 (PC, Mac)
ss_6186dc655644b19770d8d7ce09a13ddbd43d6577.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/573170/Fidel_Dungeon_Rescue/
Fidel is a puzzle-crawler about finding the best path through monsters, treasure and magic. Each match is just a few minutes long, but there are many surprises and tricks to learn each time. Also, you are a dog.
No joke, one of the most cleverly and elegantly designed games I've played in years to the point where Spelunky comes up as a comparison in terms of how naturally understandable and tightly executed it is. To give a better idea of the gameplay, it's kind of like playing a The Witness line puzzle (which isn't a coincidence, and Jon Blow has been shilling it on Twitter for weeks) where you swiftly try and maximize XP and coin gain by surgically taking out enemies and carving out the best path you can in the level without doubling back over your line, or in this case, your leash.
Someone called it a "puzzle-action" game on Steam and that feels like a more apt description than just "puzzle game", simply because of the general flow of the game as well as the extra layer of satisfaction and game feel; the game has juicy, satisfying enemy squashes, a great level up effect, snappy music and sound effects, screen shake, etc.. It's a rouge-lite/like as well, but it's light on the procedural generation, as screens are handcrafted/handpicked and have a lot of level design elements that are always the same each time you play. Just so I don't destroy expectations, it's not meant for dozens or hundreds of hours of play like Spelunky was - I basically strangled everything possible out of it in 11 hours - but there wasn't a dull moment in that 11 and I can seeing myself jumping back in and still having fun. Plus the devs have been avidly patching and tweaking things despite it being so polished and balanced out of the gate, and it sounds like they may add content in the future.
I'd go into more detail, but simply learning about the game's mechanics is a blast and a sight to behold. Someone mentioned that the title screen itself could win an award and I totally see where they are coming from. One of the best games I've played this year, like top 3 so far.
UFO 50 - PC
Q4Y0oYE.jpg
http://50games.fun/
UFO 50 is a collection of 50 single and multiplayer games from the creators of Spelunky, Downwell, Time Barons, Skorpulac, and Madhouse. Jump in and explore a variety of genres, from platformers and shoot 'em ups to puzzle games and RPGs. Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities.
UFO 50 - PC
Damn it looks good. Also here are some FAQs from their website:
Q. How big are the games?
A: In general, the games are slightly smaller than commercial 8-bit titles from the 80's, but rest assured that they are full games and not microgames or minigames! Completing the entire collection could easily take over a hundred hours.
Q. Who's doing what?
A: Each game has a director who came up with the core concept, but everyone on the team worked on games they didn't direct and helped with art, programming, and design.
Q. Are the games connected in any way?
A: The story of UFO 50 is that the games were all created in the 80's by a fictional company that was obscure but ahead of its time. They're all connected by a unique 32-color palette and other restrictions we decided on to make them feel more authentic.
Q. What kind of multiplayer is available in the collection?
A: All the games will feature a single-player mode, and roughly a third of the games will feature either cooperative or competitive multiplayer modes as well.
Q. What platforms is UFO 50 coming out on and when?
A: We're planning to release the game on PC first in 2018 and then move on to other platforms.
Q. How much will UFO 50 cost?
A: We're still deciding on the price, but we want it to be an easy purchase!
I probably should have talked about Iron Crypticle when it was released last month, but I just got around to playing through it.
This isn't so much a sequel as it is an overhaul of Iron Fisticle. I thought pretty highly of the original game, but it was definitely lacking in certain respects.
In short, Crypticle improves upon every aspect of its predecessor, making for a more refined and tighter arcade game. It might be a little too easy for twin-stick veterans, but it's unique direction (Smash TV meets Bubble Bobble) gives it a lot of personality.
Anyone else giving a try to Lost Technology ( $2.69 ) ?
Only played like an hour of it but seems pretty fun. Kind of a very light x4 or total war.
Probably won't end up as amazing as one way heroics was ( yup fanboy here ), but I feel like it's always worth checking what small games Playism bring to us.
Slime Rancher - $19.99 (PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox)
FJOKEZa.jpg
http://slimerancher.com/
Slime Rancher is the tale of Beatrix LeBeau, a plucky, young rancher who sets out for a life a thousand light years away from Earth on the ‘Far, Far Range’ where she tries her hand at making a living wrangling slimes.
Slime Rancher left Early Access on Aug. 1st.
REALLY digging it so far.
SUNDERED - 19.99$ (PC MAC LINUX)
header.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/535480/Sundered/
Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival and sanity, a hand-drawn epic from the creators of Jotun. Resist or embrace.
As most of you allready know, Sundered is a metroidvania byt he creators of Jotun.
I'm 10h+ in and quite like it. The levels are actually partially randomly generated: the general layout is fixed, only tiles composing it will change. The game is rather classic in its form, but well executed and beautyfull.
Combat is fast and forgiving (wich I like) and more often than not you'll have to run for your life chassed by hordes of enemies. Lots of mini bosses and giant, epic bosses.
I had quite the opposite reaction sadly. I found that game to be a real hassle simulator and refunded it just under two hours. A lot of people liked it though so I guess I am a bit of an outlier.
Ditto. I got it in a Monthly, so I could not refund it.
Yeah, I can certainly see where SR straddles this line between Zen & repetitive gameplay. I can easily see people falling on either side of the equation.
But I'm an unabashed Farming Simulator nerd, so the grind is a large part of the appeal in my case. Plus the controls feel fantastic (kind of reminds me of Doom 2016, oddly) and the world dazzlingly bright and happy. When taken as a whole, the game feels like a finely polished PopCap production in 3D.
In the end the foraging & exploration, slime-tending and base building is a relaxing 'rinse & repeat' gameplay loop that's right up my alley. Quite pleasantly surprised as I never paid the game much attention when it was in EA.
I know it's not a brand new release but my friend just gave me a key for Nongunz and told me it seemed up my alley. Boy was he right. I expected a spritey run 'n gun roguelike but it's a lot more than that. The setting and tone are seriously unsettling and foreboding, plus the town is strange in more ways than one. And there's this meta layer that I don't quite understand yet. If you like GoNNER's gameplay and the way it delivers information iconographically rather than textually and forces you to figure things out on your own, then I recommend you check this out.
I also recommend it.
It's more of a hack and slash blend of rougelike and metroidvania. Fights are randomly generated with the exception of special "endless" rooms. I got through the game without having to grind, for exp, too.
How come Japanese amateur game developers only publish their games on obscure Japanese websites where these games will remain unknown by most?
For example, there is a contest about creating games with Wolf RPG that is happening right now.
http://www.silversecond.com/WolfRPGEditor/Contest/entry.shtml
I have played entry #35 (夏雲の島の宝船) and it was truly decent, not enough for a commercial game but definitively worth of being published on a worldwide platform like itch.io or gamejolt.
This is sad.
How come Japanese amateur game developers only publish their games on obscure Japanese websites where these games will remain unknown by most?
For example, there is a contest about creating games with Wolf RPG that is happening right now.
http://www.silversecond.com/WolfRPGEditor/Contest/entry.shtml
I have played entry #35 (夏雲の島の宝船) and it was truly decent, not enough for a commercial game but definitively worth of being published on a worldwide platform like itch.io or gamejolt.
This is sad.
It's really strange. Maybe the language is a barrier or they don't feel confident in releasing it for an external market?
Any impressions for Tokyo 42? May pick it up on PS4 this week but impressions are a bit hard to come by on GAF.
