Marvel: More console games are coming, announcements next year

Would a MvC4 even work today? Marvel movies is mainstream content and MvC is anything but that with its deep diving references and wide selection of characters?

I think something more traditional should be expected rather then a somewhat niche fighting game.

There are people high up in Marvel that are really, really bitter about FOX having the movie rights to some Marvel properties and have been trying to erase them out of spite. Well, person, specifically Ike Perlmutter.

He does sign off on video games, so I am unsure if he'd directly say "Yo fuck a Gambit game," there's nothing stopping him from doing so.

Neoxon is somewhat wrong... Marvel Contest of Champions came out December last year and it has both the X-Men and Fantastic Four represented. If there is a ban on X-Men and Fantastic Four, it would had to have happened this year at the earliest.

In any case, I would probably expect the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters to appear in a potential MvC4 mostly because there is a difference between making a throwaway mobile Marvel game without mutants and making the most well-known Marvel video game series have a sequel without mutants especially when most of what the series is known for comes from mutants. The former only gets X-Men & Fantastic Four fanboys pissed... The later gets gamers pissed off at you, and the last thing Marvel needs is gamers declaring them an enemy for leaving out Mag-freakin'-neto and Mango Sentinel and siding with Fox.

Now Marvel could get around it by having Avengers Vs. Capcom or Avengers Vs. Street Fighter, but that will raise questions about why it is a step back from Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and lead back to the mutant issue. In fact, if there truly is a ban on using X-Men and Fantastic Four characters now, that would be the most likely reason why there isn't a Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 beyond Capcom's financial trouble. Marvel would know that gamers would crucify them if they forced Capcom to make a Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 without X-Men characters or Dr. Doom, so they don't allow one to be made.
That's exactly what happened (I even referenced Contest of Champions as being one of the games that slipped through the cracks). DeNA has gone on record saying that they aren't allowed to use X-Men or F4 characters, same for whoever made Marvel Future Fight. Likewise, we're getting Lego Avengers instead of Lego Marvel 2. And while there's a chance that it could have mutants or F4 characters, the odds of that are slim given recent events.

I have no desire for a fighting game, but if there was one, why even use non marvel characters? A new Street Fighter is already coming, and with all of the upcoming civil war stuff in MCU, expanded Avengers teams (Spiderman, Ant Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Panther and their villains) Guardians...there are plenty of characters right there even without X Men and Fantastic 4.

Why not just make a Civil War or Infinity War fighting game?

Capcom already made one, it's called Marvel Super Heroes.

Marvel are sitting on great IP and could theoretically with the right team make superb games.

MVC is an obvious fan favourite, what about an action RPGs though? Or an action adventure?

The challenge for them is, Marvel is almost too big. For this reason, it is easy for them to release cheap average games, and make a ton of money.

I do hope someone at Marvel can look at what Rocksteady and WB achieved with the Arkham series.

I worry that they won't though, Arkham came out 6 years ago, so I would have thought they had noticed and done something if they felt it was worth it.

In reality, it is too easy for them to make mobile games and money that way, or licence out their IP to Lego and Minecraft.

One day maybe.

The problem is that unlike Capcom (who's contract simply expired), Activision's was revoked. All they have is Spidey now (since Marvel was grandfathered into the deal thanks to regaining the merchandising rights to Spider-Man stuff form Sony), & that's gonna expire in I believe 2017.

At least the MvC series has a glimmer of hope based on the references made to it by Marvel themselves (see my Wall of Text earlier in this thread). Unless Activision can make a compelling case as to why Marvel should give them another chance, I sadly can't see MUA happening. Which is a shame, because I really enjoyed the first two games.

I should have clarified that MUA3 would be great to have, but it would be a spiritual successor because of exactly what you said. Another reason it probably won't happen is because it might be a direct competitor to Marvel Heroes, which Marvel has a long term interest in. The games are quite different but on the surface they look very similar to most, I'd guess.

Surely there exists a character in the non-X Men Marvel universe (or capcom universe) that can adopt Wolverine's moveset.

And storm.

And magneto.

And sentinel.

It'd sell on the fact it has Marvel characters.
UMvC3 had an Easy Input option, and offering simplicity like that to casuals is a good move meaning they can just mess about with friends or family and not worry about strats, etc.

All that matters is to have a fun time playing games if you ask me :P

Go the Amingo/Ruby Heart route and make original characters for the game that are shameless copies of them.

The image of that Spider-Man costume is shameless.

Way ahead of you.
  • Wolverine -> Black Panther
  • X-23 -> Gamora
  • Jean Grey -> Scarlet Witch
  • Sentinel -> Groot
  • Magneto -> Adam Warlock
  • Storm -> Kelda
  • Doctor Doom -> Black Bolt
  • Super-Skrull -> Crystal
  • *Rogue -> Captain Marvel

losing mags would be the hardest pill to swallow in video game history
I'm not sure if it would be hardest pill to swallow, we've seen worse things happen in gaming history. And besides, knowing Capcom, they wouldn't let his moveset go to waste.

they should give bison some story reason for getting insane new powers that basically make him mags

that's the only thing I'll accept

It could work, its a fighting game and fun

whats the rocket science here?
Cool then we don't need a Marvel vs Capcom 4 because we already have 3 of them.

We do because marvel vs capcom is fun and I want more

Can we get a Marvel fighting game with just Marvel characters since it's likely Capcom is broke as fuck right now?
You realize that Capcom could also make a Marvel-only fighter, right? In fact, they already made Marvel Super Heroes back in the day.

Netherrealms expressed interests.
NetherRealm already has DC. Plus their fighting games, although they aren't bad, aren't exactly the best out there. They barely last 2 years in the FGC. UMvC3 is still being played today, & retained its prime time slot at EVO 2015. I say this as someone who enjoyed Injustice & Mortal Kombat X.

lol. I like Injustice but I feel the same. Marvel with Capcom's touch works too well.
This, basically.

But either Capcom needs the dough to make it or Marvel is gonna give it to another studio, I would say Iron Galaxy but... nah.

You know I understand if the Mutant fatigue during the 90s turned a lot of readers off, but I think the 2000s had a great number of X-Books and stories. The fact that they were Marvel's biggest money makers for over 30 years and then to just ditch them like that...it's fucking stupid and absurd.

Well there's already the Telltale Marvel game that got announced.
I forgot they announced that and thought this was a joke about how many projects Telltale have on the go. I've enjoyed all of their work to a greater or lesser degree, but they do seem to be spreading themselves pretty thin.

They're really upset about Fantastic Four.
Here's the list of characters from their flagship game (Contest of Champions): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel:_Contest_of_Champions

It includes X-Men and Dr. Doom, but I suspect they wouldn't go out of their way to sign a game specifically about the Fantastic Four.

Given they really, really love this game, they're probably also not dying to run out and get another fighting game made.

If I recall correctly, Contest of Champions came out before the likes of Marvel Mighty Heroes & Marvel Future Fight, where the shut-out was more strongly enforced.

Dear god why does platinum have to make everything?!?

because they're awesome and should totally make everything

I don't understand why people keep referencing the blockbuster movies as some sort of metric for MVC4's possible existence. They're two completely different mediums and ballpark (the MVC3 saga sold extremely well for video game standards, let's not forget).

Sadly they can't given how Marvel treats certain characters outside of the comics now. Plus unless they use the MT Framework engine again (which, judging by DMC4/DMC4:SE on PC, most likely runs on witchcraft), I doubt they'd be able to port characters from UMvC3. If MvC4 happens, they'll likely start from scratch with a smaller roster & expand later via DLC (see their plans for Street Fighter V).

Not only that, but Marvel has the final say on who gets in & who doesn't, just like with MvC 3/UMvC 3.

It's not a problem for Capcom with their roster, because it's their characters. On the Marvel side however, it's different.

Sorry, but Marvel is going where the money is & where it appeals to most casuals, & that's with the Avengers. Neither the X-Men or the Fantastic Four are very popular like they used to be. They each have a niche fanbase.

We'll be lucky if we even get Wolverine &/or Deadpool in the next installment.

In recent game releases for Marvel it went:

Spider running game
CoC(which they can't do anything about the mutants since they are a class)
MH
Future Fight.

When the contract negotiation comes up for Heroes and MPQ, expect a decrease in number of mutants and FF characters being made.

In fact, as shown by one of the screenshots, an edit has already been made to the Spider-Man running game to remove any mention of the F4.

The only shame would be that I can't say "Ooh he got dat mango sentinel".
It'd most likely be Mango Groot, instead.
