Yep. A lot of people are going to be surprised at how high vita hardware is next week, and it should stay above 10k/wk the rest of the year, at the very least.

I somehow doubt that, since it makes very little sense. The new model doesn't really solve any of the Vita's issues before it was announced (and the Vita was also doing abysmal back then). Without actual software to push it and the fact the 3DS is about to have it's most popular software since it's release, I'm honestly questioning if the Vita will be able to stay above 10k much until the Vita TV releases.

I don't know what to think, all the systems have great games... Japan just seems not interested. Come on! Wind Waker is awesome!

Stealing from Kagari's thread:

Final Fantasy VI is getting an iOS/Android remake in the same style as we saw with V.

http://kotaku.com/final-fantasy-vi-is-coming-to-ios-and-android-vii-coul-1443087791

"It is basically like a remake of the original VI," Tokita said as he proudly revealed his surprise at the end of a presentation about the recent smartphone release of FFV and the upcoming mobile release of FFIV: The After Years. "But there have been some enhancements."

"The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."

The graphics, he said, will be refined for cellphones. They'll still be 2D but sharpened, a la the recent mobile release of V.

They also mention they're interested in doing FF7.

Epic Mickey for 3DS, with a horrid 20-40% second-week sellthrough and only 2,905 sold on its second week, is overall quite a disappointment for Spike Chunsoft and Disney.

You would think after the success that was Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life that Disney games would be more popular, but it appears to be on a game-by-game basis.
I don't think Disney even cared that much or put much hope on the title. Epic Mickey got a really late release in Japan (i thought it wasn't even coming at all) after bombing on the west and having an awful word of mouth. The release was so late that it was hard for it to have a chance. The original EM on the Wii did more than 70k. It was published by Nintendo, but it's not a matter of only the publisher when you go from that to 3k at best.

Comparing with Magic Castle, the fact that Spike is a much smaller publisher than Bandai Namco helped too. Namco seems really close to Disney these days, publishing not only Magic Castle, but Infinity later this year, but even them didn't want nothing with Epic Mickey. It's a bad product after all.

3DS was never doing this bad, not even the week before the price cut. And that price cut put 3DS more in line with the price of previous Nintendo handhelds, it didn't drop below ridiculous levels or anything. Plus it had like half a year selling bad, unlike ViitaU.

I know it was never doing this bad, but that's not the point. All three systems under-performed, and the last two still are. The DS was the most successful, it only makes sense that the 3DS wouldn't have done as bad as the other two. The PSP was more successful than the Wii, so it makes sense that the Vita wouldn't do as bad as the Wii U. And now the PS3 performed worse than the other three last gen.

I think I see a trend there, so I just doubt the PS4 will be very successful past the launch. It seems like there will be a drought of content with Japanese appeal, and the big Japanese titles are still a while away. So I don't think it has as much to do with the Vita and the Wii U themselves as products in Japan as people make it seem. It's just everything this gen are going to do crap numbers apart from one dedicated platform, and mobile.

Also, I would argue the size of the price drop had a much bigger impact on the 3DS's chances than if it had been at that price from the start. There was a long drought and Nintendo needed something to kickstart momentum. They had a great opportunity there with the initial price tag to do a large price drop while only incurring short-term losses. Had the 3DS been 15,000 yen from the start, it would have done better, but it would have lost momentum too. The price drop was a bold, unprecedented move and it paid off, but before the drop, the 3DS was still in dangerous waters considering the exploding mobile environment, even if it was never on such abysmal levels as the Vita and the Wii U.

I honestly don't know if the PSP outselling the Vita says more about the VIta or the PSP. I think the new revision will bring it above 10k for a little while but it will drop back down soon after.
Vita does have a better chance than the WiiU

it will be in the end

3DS > Vita ≧ PS4 > WiiU >>> xbawx one

I'm expecting the PS4 to outsell the Vita if things continue as they are.

Dangan Ronpa comes out tomorrow and that could have an effect but that could also just be one of those games that sells to the people who already own the device for all I know.

i'll never understand why sony tried getting back into the portable market. They should just focus on the home console market.

Yep, Sony should focus on consoles, and Nintendo on handhelds.

I mean, look at the Vita and Wii U sales.

The time MH4 will start outselling MHP3 launch aligned is coming. Short supply, Pokemon (with the expected shortage this title will also have) and holidays will lead to much better legs.

Because the PSP sold well?

That was before the mobile explosion. Many people who bought the psp used it for piracy and homebrew at least in the west from my experience. In Japan it got a huge sales boost from monster hunter which they now lost.

I'm sure they started development of the Vita with the expectation that they'd get major franchises like Monster Hunter on the platform.

Indeed, and also that Sony started developement of the Vita probably sometime around summer 2010 (they unveiled the Vita in January 2011 and it was shown playable and near final design as well). Phones and tablets were not as popular back then compared to today's situation. The same goes for the 3DS, it started developement a long time ago.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Just noticed that. Pikmin 3 must be in a better world.

I was going to talk about it as well. New Play Control! Pikmin 2 is there, but no Pikmin 3? It's an horrible sign for Wii U.

When the heck do preorders start for Super Mario 3D World on Amazon.co.jp? I already saw Wii Party U not setting charts on fire (around 120th), Mario & Sonic being abismal (400-500th), just fyi.

So apparently, Pokemon X/Y save quickly. So maybe it does use the NAND-based saving cartridge thing that Animal Crossing uses. That wouldn't bode well for supply unless they managed to increase their output since AC:NL.

They also weren't expecting AC to sell as crazy as it did. Pokemon they do know what kind of supplies they need.

For Animal Crossing it was less the fact that they couldn't get enough supply, and more the fact that they severely underestimated demand, so they didn't have a sufficient amount of components to put together the cartridges when retailers were demanding more.

They had to wait for the third-party factory to manufacture more semiconductors first, and that took a while.

Oh yea, completely forgot they underestimated the demand for the game.

man, I remember before MH4 some people were questioning whether the 3DS could close the YoY gap
:lol

Those people weren't right in the head. 3DS does 100k+ a week during the holidays which had not come yet, and Monster Hunter and Pokemon were on the way. A blind man in New Jersey could see that coming.

I think people about to be terribly disappointed in Vita sales next week when next week is going to be swamped by Pokemon, hell even GTA5 is bigger than nearly every Vita game and if it magically hits Rockstar's estimates it will be bigger. I'll say the same of Wii U. I'm not sure where people are expecting the baseline to jump to. 5k? 10k? It's looking more and more like neither of these platforms will ever be consistently above 10k non holidays.

i'll never understand why sony tried getting back into the portable market. They should just focus on the home console market.

There needs to be competition on the handheld front and Sony is the one to do it.

Just because it sold like dirt this week doesn't mean it's going to sell like dirt every week. After the new model comes out it smooth sailing. then when FFX drops it's going to soar

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Repeating this ad infinitum every thread isn't going to do anything to help make that happen.

It reminds me so much of a specific scene in one of the Barks classics, when Donald Duck and nephews discover the cubic eggs from Incas. When Donald talks with the mad autoctone who thought he could fly with some fake wings, specifically. Cubic eggs = FFX theory, obviously XD

Since people are talking about the new Vita model which is released today at JP. What do you think will be the sales next week?

I think it will be around 30k. Still dwarfed by 3DS sales (which should be huge, due to pokemon), of course, but a decent bump.

Just my guess.

Really? I mean, using the words "smooth sailing" when talking about the Vita's performance is very bold. Why would it be smooth sailing after the new model? Sales were going down the toilets before the new model was even announced. What kind of sailing are we talking about? 7k a week when dust settles?

18-20k is my guess, but I could be way under-estimating the demand for this, blinded by my own lack of interest in this revision. I think it was a missed opportunity for Sony to make something even more different, with a smaller screen for a more portable system, and a cheaper price. And also I'm not sure about their strategy of releasing it two days before Pokemon.

It should manage to do 50k. But it makes me wonder if it had been better if Vita was selling above 10k a week and not 5-7k now. Makes sales for the revision less impressive

Some people here do not seem to see the appeal of the 2000 model in Japan, and thus do not think it will help Vita sales, but the current sales seem to show that the new 2000 model is clearly more appealing to the Japanese market, since, at present, consumers can choose to buy a 1000 or 2000 for the same price. Looking at amazon.co.jp rankings today, 5 of the 6 new 2000 Vita models are in the top 100, currently the highest being at #41 (Light blue/white), the lowest at #127 (Khaki/black). None of the OG models are anywhere close. The Black OG 3G/Wifi model, which is in stock and is essentially the same price as the new 2000 models (~19,000 yen), is closest at #241. I think this shows most Japanese don't care about the OLED (or 3G) anymore, they want the new, more colourful, lighter, thinner, more comfortable Vita, and the sales are reflecting that. Otherwise, the OG 3G unit would be above the rest in sales.

First point I fully agree with; second point is rather questionable. Problem with your statement is that while Final Fantasy X is a popular game this is getting released for the Playstation 3 also, which will eat into any potential sales that could benefit the portable platform. Lets start by Vita reaching more respectable numbers (not 3DS numbers) first before claiming smooth sailing. I will say that, as a previous user suggested, a new model and pricecut with God Eater 2 and strong marketing to compliment would've done some damn good numbers.

Fair point. The OLED screen quality must not be a big factor to the Japanese market (or they are just unaware of it).

Yeah, he's a joke character by now. But there's always unaware people coming to these threads falling for his bait...

As for whether PXY will outsell MH4 first week or not, it will if there's enough stock...

This is becoming hard to watch. You have no evidence to really support this. Remakes of FFs have never been hardware movers. The Wonderswan is testament to this.

True, aesthetically you look at what sells in Japan and the new Vita models certainly lineup with their taste in hardware. The devices feel more fashionable.

Personally, I would be surprised if the Vita did more than 15~20k next week. I don't see the new model boosting sales by more than that, when you consider it isn't really cheaper or technically superior. The Wii U bundle could have a pretty good impact on sales, for the first week at least, because it is actually a pretty good deal for what you get. That all depends if people want a Wii U period though I guess.
