Microsoft Now Advertising Series S as a 1080p/60 Device

That's not correct 😉
My Q9Fn from 2 years ago is compatible with 1440p 120fps for example (with vrr).
That display/panel is native 4k... it can receive 1440p signal... a lot of TVs do that.

I really never saw a 1440p TV display/panel.

True, if the dlss type solution does come around, it could really help the s.

For those saying the s is a 720p machine, please, is the series x a 1440p machine now because 1 or 2 games run at 1440p? No, so why employ a different standard here?
Most s games are 1080p (sometimes even more) and most x games are 4k.

AC Valhalla runs at 720 in performance mode already. And a lot of people still had fun with, and chose to play in that mode (judging by the game streams). 720p can still look fine on a small TV (32") or a smaller desktop display (24" 1080p). I played a good portion of Spider-man over PSnow on a 24" monitor and it was still enjoyable at 720p, and that had compression mixed in. I'd take the lower resolution and a nice stable framerate any day of the week over devs trying to push the box too far with uneven results.
240p 60fps by gens end then.

This is what the Series S should have always been advertised/marketed as. Under promise and over deliver.

Ditto.

With breathtaking graphics!

In all honesty, I couldn't breath the first time I have seen Craig
been laughing so hard

It was always a 1080p box, and they should never of marketed as 1440p, and i dont even know why they did that.
You dont have to work for Microsoft to know the S would be targeting 1080p for most devs.
To avoid the backlash from the fact that the machine would be outputting pretty much what you think you got last gen. They were pushing the X1X marketing as 4k 60fps after all.
Selling the XSS as 1440p up to 120fps made it seem much more capable than what you already had. Now that the thing is out continuing to do it would be comical.

The way it should've been from the start. 60-120FPS and quick loadings are such an upgrade for all the people with 1S, hell even 1X it's not even funny. IMO people that are on a budget with old FullHD TV sets and X1S/PS4 should definitely jump on XSS, it doesn't cost a fortune but boosts the experience so damn much.

Ok, I see your point, I thought you were speaking about the 1440p as input resolution, my mistake :pie_zipper: (and yes, I think there is no real TV with 1440p native resolution also)

It's more representative of real world games, but I don't think they had to do this. The machine can run games up to 1440p resolution (and even 4K) so the original advertisements were correct. Secondly, PS5 and Series X are advertised as 4K machines but it's rare to find games running in 4K native. 4K-ish with DRS seems to be the order of the day.

My impression was that it's a 1080p version of whatever comes to SX in 4K, and then if you're lucky you'd get some stuff in 1440p. If so, this commercial seems fine to me.

Most people either have a 4K or 1080p TV, don't think anyone has a 1440p TV unless they're using a gaming monitor.

I know people seem to be split into two sides here - either "lol, they're backtracking" or "well, it's important to be realistic", but has anyone considered that this is specifically an ad for Forza Horizon 4 and Series S?

Forza Horizon 4 runs at 1080p60 on Series S, so in that sense it's an accurate ad. But if the game had been, say, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, I don't think it's a stretch to say the ad would either say 4K60 or 1080p120 instead, because that's what those games support instead.

I don't think it's a case of them being more realistic about the console's capabilities in general, I think they're just being accurate about how that specific game plays. Watch the ad again, it's clearly an ad for Forza Horizon 4 and how it runs on Series S.

Wrong. They did have to do this in order to stop misrepresenting their product. If they didn't have to, they wouldn't have.

The other consoles can advertise 4K gaming because they actually are capable of that, but the Series S cannot adequately support 1440p. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it's a budget console after all.

That's the problem, the range of supported resolutions and framerates by the games is just too wide, it's like you have to have both FHD and 4K TV for the console to switch between depending on how the games perform, so it's simply better to set for the FHD, with added downsampling or 120FPS every once in a while.

You could say the same about the PS5 and 4k though. It can support it, but most titles don't hit that number. There are titles released already where the XSS does hit 1440p, though most don't hit that number. Not to say that most didn't look at this system as a 1080p box anyway, or even lower in high framerate modes.

Or the Series X, if you want to proceed that way. The PS5 supports 4k, and is as capable of 4K as the Series X, except for game engines built for DirectX that got ported to PS5 using GNMX without much care in optimization (note, GNMX is an high level adapter layer that converts DirectX calls to use GNM instead, not the same as the low level GNM APIs).

The myth that most games get made for PS5 first and then ported to XSX is in direct opposition to what actually happens in multiplatform development.

Nah, the system won't grow any weaker in comparison to the PS5/XSX as time goes on. So unless you feel 580p is a realistic end result for the top tier systems, it shouldn't ever slip that far.
It is below baseline IE PS5. It will get less and less focus and optimisation. Thus xss version will fare relatively worse.

How do you know what the lead platform for develop is? Historically developers make games for the system that has the highest install base spending most of the time on that version only porting to the lower selling consoles later.

A super compact and cheap box that can play next gen games at 1080p 60fps. Amazing deal. All 3 consoles are. Many PC gamers are perfectly happy with 1080p 60. We pretending that isn't good now?

And it has games that are 1440p, hell even some that are 4k. PS5 and XSX can't reach 4k in a lot of games, we going to shame them now too?

Well, it's got to a point Sony fans are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for wins

- Patch size comparisons
- Headset comparisons
- Comparing Series S marketing 1440 vs 1080, when the system can do both

lol

Dont forget console warriors. PS3 and 360 were promoted as 1080p machines and you can probably count the number of games that ran at native 1080p on your fingers.

Next gen lol, more like last gen games at 1080p 60fps, xsx and ps5 can just about claim to be next gen with such a small uplift in specs from last gen, ur claiming a 4tf console is next gen lol, xbox fanboy much?. Its just last gen console repackaged as a new console, i would not care about it, but its gonna hold back xsx and ps5 going foward, which is a big shame.

LMAO I thought people already learnt that there is not 4TF "console" but GPU. Some just won't concede to reasoning.

BTW, XSS can even do 4K and MS maketing guy already confirmed that the 1080p at 60fps was referring to FH4 being promoted with the console which is how that game runs so some of you can finally take a breath.

Series S is a canary down the mine. Its Microsoft's R&D device to see a physical representation of Power:Cost:Size ratio.

The Series S slim will be a 'hub' sized device, aimed at the mass market of electronic devices for: Streaming, gaming, media purchasing and WFH/Home office set ups.

It is so funny to hear people downplay the XSX 12TF with comments about how TF don't matter then attack the XSS for having 4TF. Next gen is not defined by TF next gen is defined by features: variable rate shading, machine learning, raytracing, sampler feedback streaming these are next gen features and the XSS has the same features as the XSX. It lacks graphical horsepower but it is the same thing as comparing the 3090 to a 3060 on the PC. Keep seeing the same line about how XSS is 'holding back' next gen and can't point to any evidence that that is true. Same comments from devs complaining about optimizing challenges with the XSS but none of those devs are actually using the features to mitigate the challenges they are having.

The big shame is MS should have done more to support all devs to ensure they had the development environment to get the best from their boxes. I assume covid had an impact and I'm sure that they are doing what they can to reach out and support devs but the misinformation is already out there. Thankfully the majority of people who actually buy the box seem to be ok with it and it can't be discounted that it will get support for years to come and Gamepass will be a fantastic option for playing tons of games on it. Oh well MS will continue to set the standard for their box and if a dev is interested in getting good results there is a mega corporation available for assistance.

Ignorant.

You have no idea what they are or they are not doing.

Provide some facts.
Prove they aren't using these features, if going to make a claim like that.

If you can't, stop presenting opinions like facts.

It's easy. You'd see the results. Games using VRS exhibit certain artifacts when implemented. It is also pretty evident that most developers, especially during this cross gen period, are simply using the techniques used during the last generation. It's not surprising that time will be needed to get up to speed with the latest techniques. I am glad to hear you don't like opinions presented as facts. I'm sure you'll jump up and correct O onnextflix5 when he makes claims about the XSS 'holding the gen back' right? Surely you wouldn't stand for that!

Facts are none of the games use Mesh Shaders or SFS yet, so he's correct. 3 use VRS and two of these get to 120fps as advertised, the other one is 1440p as advertised.
So he's correct.

Are you actually for real? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The Chief Technical Officer, of 4A games, says it's difficult.

https://www.tomsguide.com/news/xbox...-for-future-games-says-metro-exodus-developer

And guess what he IS using VRS for the next gen update for Metro Exodus, along with ray tracing and all the other good stuff :messenger_tears_of_joy:

https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/16/...xbox-series-x-s-upgrades-ray-tracing-dlss-2-0

But you're convinced that he and all of the others, who have complained aren't using the features properly? And you can prove it by looking at gameplay? What gameplay have you watched of all these games. Certainly not Metro Exodus eh?

By the way, it is an impressive skill to be able look at an image and say for definite if it is or isn't using VRS. I Iean, take the image below you're able to tell that the one the left is without VRS right? Even though to a layman like me, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Not without an on/off comparison. It's that subtle.

It's very convenient.

What a 🤡
