I suspect that more mainstream knowledge of anime brought the pedos to us. They are aware of the fact that some of these characters are underage and some of them are explicitly designed to appeal to them, so they become fans.
Edit: there's even a show about a kindergarten teacher who is hit on by 3 of his students. It was broadcast on television alongside better known shows. Fortunately as far as I know it has never been officially localized or distributed in the West, because who the fuck would.

I don't think that it's a coincidence that this fall emerges days after he came on Maher. I believe the best way to defeat people like Milo is for enough people to be morally upset. Those CPAC organizers and book publisher couldn't handle the heat of this. I don't believe they even care about him being a pedophile. I think they only care because too many people got upset this time and it scared them off.
They are okay with publishing his books as long as it contained his other filth.
I wouldn't give these people brownie points for doing the right thing. Outrage is powerful. It can have a chain reaction that can take anybody down (even Bannon) but it cannot work if not more people are pissed and start digging through the corpses in contempt.
Democrats are still not seeing red. They don't understand how strong they are and how much they can do to combat the right if they focus on the contrast between them and the far-right.
It is unreasonable it took this long to take Milo down. I expect the world to have evil people in it, but to see so many masses who accept nearly anything short of pedophelia. It depresses me...
I'd like Democrats to take wisdom from this and try and figure out how to channel the deplorable acts of the far-right into a framework that makes collective masses (liberals, average democrats, moderates, moderate republicans) so angry that more terrible people will be taken down by the people and as a result laws will be instigated.
When do you get the "enough" moments that actually becomes the catalyst for making anti-harrasment laws? It can only happe if enough people in society are frofthing from the mouth with rage. But you need to get your people that riled up.
You need to use a certain bit of manipulation to make that angry. That is how you make a counter-force on the right that becomes effective.
It is not okay that Milo is a Breitbart editor, and a golden boy of Bannon who has soverignity and exclusiverights to access to Trump and the White House. Milo is incredible close to Trump through Bannon, and that this will bounce off Breitbart and Bannon is unacceptable. It shows you how few people outside the liberal circles really pay attention to Bannons acts.
So much of the far-rights power comes from Propaganda on multiple level. You got the mainstream (Fox), the ultra-far right (Breitbart) but also unlikely allies for republicans like the conspiracy outlets (Info Wars) and the young internet conservative circles (MRAs, PUAs, GamerGaters, Milo supporters). Collectively they have drowned out the normal channels that would have led to outrage that would have been the downfall of Trump in any other election.
Obama had the internet on lock during his campaigns. There is a key difference here in how conservatives got so much power thanks to their media.
So it has to start there. the fight back has to start with getting through this terrible membrane and the end result being that many Americans will feel so appalled by this that the outrage effect works again.
