I don't think adding more classes would make much of an improvement to teamwork or strategy. In fact, part of the problem is that a lot of people only do one thing in one part of the level, regardless of what the other team is doing. So you'll get steamrolled by tanks because no one is laying mines, or constantly get squad wiped because no one is reviving. People just choose their favorite class when they should be choosing the best class for the current situation.

If the classes become more niche and specialized then so will the players.

I'd rather people be allowed to tweak their class to fit the situation, as they're currently doing. It's not like DICE is abandoning classes altogether and, for example, letting support equip a sniper rifle, grenade launcher and defibs.

Also, this:

Easily the worst issue Battlefield has currently.

mines can be spotted way to easily though. They need to remove the mine spot function, only tanks with thermal imaging should be able to see them. Or introduce an extra mine detection perk or something.

No.

With all the lock-on bullshit in the game now, tank pilots are forced to use smoke, you can't even equip thermal anymore if you want to keep your tank up more than 30 seconds.

And most vehicles don't have thermal as an option.

Spotting mines is a necessity. There are enough corny weapons in the game already for no-skill players. It's not hard to get kills with mines as they are, they don't need a buff to dork status.

Ya this totally ruined bd3 for me. I love playing as engy and placing mines in the shadows

Well, as a tank guy I never had issues with spoting mines. I hardly ever use smoke, my standard equipment is thermal+armour. But then I usually play the smaller maps, I don't like the big maps with 24 players.

As pilot I don't care about spotting them. But as the gunner I have saved (with last-second spots) myself and my absentminded pilot so many times I cannot count. lol

Place them just over blind hills, around corners, in blackened craters, just above inclines (makes them really hard to shoot), in places you know a vehicle will spawn (especially as a rush defender, if you're about to lose a base, drop a pile of mines in the spot you know their tank spawns), you can even still put them in shadows and get kills.

That's seven classes for a five man squad.

The class are fine. That said, I wouldn't mind giving up grenades on the assault class if it meant I could carry defib, first aid AND a 320. Would make the assault class slightly overpowered, but I think would greatly benefit teamwork.

I miss the combat excellence pin from BC2.

The ribbon they give you in BF3 is totally lame compared to the CE pin from BC2. That thing was awesome. When that one popped, you were usually coming off a high from doing something significant... and having just seen some shit.

Pins > ribbons.

I totally agree... I liked more pins than ribbons...

I don't like this perk inflation at all. BF used to be about a level playing field where only your skill counted. Only the class you chose made a difference. Now we have more and more customisation and now these 30 odd perks will further skew the battlefield. This will be a balancing nightmare. Not looking forward to all those balance updates.

Crisis averted, back to your homes, return your pitchforks.
When I first heard about armor, I suggested this as a balance fix... I'm surprised they already have it in the game.

Still, Demize99 is a fucking douchebag. Maybe Kertz is a cool guy irl, but on twitter he's a huge prick.

on mordorhq one of the battlelog devs said that the armor perk makes you run and sprint slower.
HOLY SHIT its almost as if it works just like it did in BF2 and 2142.

Who would have guessed?

edit:and to clarify you could choose to use it in 2142, in BF2 it was tied to specific classes like assault, support and anti tank.

edit2: that forum's color choices are awful on the eyes.

lol like most people will care if you run a tad bit slower, if you get more bullet damage reduction most infantry will run it .
But running that means you'll have to be content with the other specs in the progression. For example, is having armor worth wasting a spec on lessened fall damage?

I do not expect armor to be among the most desirable spec options in the game. I suspect it's there for the noob players who never even try other kits besides the default assault. Apparently there are a lot of those people. And DICE has a history now of trying to cater, at least initially, to those people. There will be kit specific "bro bars" probably much more desirable than the universal armor-enabled "offensive" default.

Maybe. lol.

We'll see soon enough.

If the goal is to make BF4 classes as flexible as possible, shadow makes the most sense for the third universal. It's also a pretty bad-ass progression.

I'm glad to see it's winning atm.

This would give you, as default universals: Offensive, Defensive, Stealth/SpecOPs.

That would be a very flexible way to mold any particular class to your playstyle.

The only time bf3 became un-fun for me was when I was grinding for unlocks. Since I've decided "fuck it" and just play with my best kits I've been performing much better again.

But goddam I still can't get a kill with a eod bot.

I know, I know why they did it makes sense, appeal to the lowest common denominator and all. I just miss it is all

You can cheese it in rush pretty easily. Either attack or defense. On defense you just hide one by the crate. Try to clip it into a box or something nearby. It's probably harder on defense than attack. On attack you can hide the bot before you arm the crate. When the guy comes in to disarm, they usually have their back to the bot and you can fry them.

It make take a few times, since sometimes you can't get away to hide fast enough after an arm. Or more than one guy comes to disarm. Or people see the bot. But it's a lot better than just cruising around the map with the bot. If you do choose to drive around with the bot, it's better to target tanks than infantrymen. You can take down a tank pretty damn fast with the EOD bot.

It controls like ass but try a hardcore game, that's how I did it. Killed a prone sniper with it on Metro in the tunnels.
This works too. Just keep one with you and hope to come upon a prone/distracted player.

DICE has posted a poll (bottom of the page) where they want players to decide the third universal upgrade path in the game: http://blogs.battlefield.com/2013/08/road-to-bf4-field-upgrades/

I voted Shadow since I'm planning on using Recon as a Special Forces class. :)
Support gets to keep C4, nice! Now we've got C4, Claymore, XM25, remote mortar and DMRs! A dream come true for a support guy like me.

And thank god for the suppression tweaks. Have a guy right in front me, shoot at him with a shotgun, don't kill him because suppression... no more of that I hope.

I voted for the first one, it's perfect.

The first one could end up being a kit-option for support... as a universal I think it's a little redundant and honestly hurts the overall flexibility of classes.

The supports are going to have some progression like that already in their kits, but wouldn't you like to be able to be a stealthy support? Get in close for a C4 on a tank without setting off their proximity sensor? There's no guarantee that cool shadow loadout specs will be something supports get access to, unless you vote for it. You can pretty much assume the support class will have something like the first one though.

I do hope shadow wins the poll.

Chinese engineer and recon look totally sweet.

Russian recon seems to have a big cock.
I seriously need to go to bed. 2 am. Why I am still up looking the cock of a Russian recon?

Americans are again the most boring looking ones.
US assault looks like hes flanking right pretty hard

So my armor worries are lessened but not gone, i'll wait for beta to start bitching again.

Armor
Unlike previous versions of Body Armor in Bad Company, this Field Upgrade in Battlefield 4 is more similar to the more limited setups in BF2 and BF2142. It does not increase your overall health, instead it makes the small upper chest hit box more resilient to damage, equal to the rest of the body. In practice, this means that snipers can’t 1HK your upper chest at point blank ranges. It also provides some small protection from shotgun burst damage, though your head, legs, arms, and stomach remain unprotected. At medium and longer ranges, the armor has no effect on how many bullets it takes to kill a player. Essentially, Body Armor is for countering CQB sniper rifles, and not much else.

BF4 Facebook has new photos at Gamescom which show a mini map of a new map (or part? I'm not sure). On mobile so unable to post.

I'm surprised that Support is getting a ton of buffs, because that class already has an answer to everything.

Recon really needed that C4, but now I'm kind of worried about Assault's role in Conquest maps. They still have no answer to vehicles, and now they're the only class with that problem.

Like the poster above said, from the BF Facebook page:

That looks like a whole hell of a lot of ocean that's playable area.
Dear God that looks like it could be good. Reminds me of the Battlefield 1942 map, with the size and shape of the island, but without a static aircraft carrier.
