OUENDAN!!!

It's been two and a half years since GAF first experienced the wonder that was Ouendan through JackFrost's (and Jonnyram's) thread impressions. I am not one to shy away that the fact behind Vestral's thread itself was the sole reason why I latched onto Ouendan and I am sure that GAF itself was responsile for 80% or more of import sales towards the original title due to his thread which is still cruising at a respectable 25 pages.

It took time to brew and grow but sure enough the Ouendan fascination catched on. Search on any Ouendan-participated song on youtube and you'll guarantee yourself to catch an Ouendan fan video in its wake - whether through the players wanting to show you their skill or through the music itself is up to you to determine.

But why wait there? iNiS, known for their sole Gitaroo Man release, decided to buck trends and latch arms around Nintendo and release Elite Beat Agents for the US residents who would seemingly miss out on the greatness that was Ouendan. Many posters here can say that it is the best in the Ouendan series but I'd have to disagree since I never tasted it till much later since the 2nd game in the Ouendan series - Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2.

EBA.jpg

Elite Beat Agents used a total of English songs which put some fans off. But eh; if you're using Y.M.C.A by the Village People then September by Earth, Wind and Fire, then finally into Canned Heat by Jamiroquai, you can't go wrong in my eyes. Still some people didn't enjoy the direction for some reason (myself included).

Then came Ouendan 2.

\o\ \o/ /o/

Still my favourite DS game of all time. Still the one game to constantly bring a smile to my face even though I got raped in Cheerleader mode on Hyde's song for the 50th time. If there's one thing that you have to respect about iNiS, it's about their knack of ability towards music and rhythm knowledge. They are the one company you seem to want to see succeed in terms of of the entire rhythm genre because of their somewhat limited experience compared to every other company out there involved in the field.

Let us hope for some more great iNiS developments, regardless of developmental platform. Handheld or console, we need to play the best there is available!

I haven't played Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents for some months now, I'm a sinner :(
Ouendan 2 seems to be a great Christmas 08 game for me. Last year was just too busy with GH3/SMG and some other games which might not be available for too long anymore (Rhythm Tengoku/bit Generations).

Listen, I was broke when Ouendan 2 was released. How does it compare to the original?

I have $$ now, so I might go import it.

Ouendan 2 is another experience on another plain of enlightenment.

I am a huge fan of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and feel it's the first true DS game that takes advantage of its capabilities, and is fun and clever in its own right.

On the other hand... I do not support stagnation. And even if a lot of people will settle for more of the same, I won't. I am pretty disappointed that iNiS followed the footsteps of Ouendan with 2 "expansion packs." EBA is fine, since they wanted to pitch it to the US. But Ouendan 2 is just plain lazy.

I just hope iNiS has some tricks up its sleeve for its next game. Or else I'm going to have to cry OUUENDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

ah, my copy of the first Ouendan just arrived yesterday, _finally_ gotten around to import it. The second Ouendan is my favorite DS game...just brilliant! Theses games give me such an unique experience, they make me really feel the music, with it's attention to small changes in rhythm here and there, you do feel like you a have a role in creating the music.

..not to mention that this game is just a brilliant use for the touchscreen. Kudos to iNiS.

Ouendan has the better music choices, but Ouendan 2 has the better stories, imo.

Both awesome awesome games. Can't wait for 3 (or EBA 2, whichever comes first)

Really? I feel they've made enough improvements to the point where I can't even go back to the first game.

If this is the state of "expansion packs", I'll gladly take 'em.

This seems like a good thread to mention this:

http://osu.ppy.sh/

It's basically an online Ouendan created by fans (like Flash Flash Revolution is to DDR). You can download professional-quality levels there and play them on your computer. Even better, it includes an editor so that you can actually make your own levels and share them. The interface is easy to understand and incredibly slick - I was very impressed by the editor.

All "approved" maps have automatic online ranking. Even better, you can actually view the replays for the Top 5 of every song. There are tons of really awesome maps available, and if you go through the list you're almost certain to find at a song you like.

!

Uh, what? For the Japanese audience that Ouendan 2 was intended for, it's a massive leap from Ouendan 1, not an expansion pack. Did you forget that Ouendan is an import game, and so, technically, we US gamers shouldn't have ever played it?

I don't think we can hold our importing habits against iNis.

Can't wait to see what iNiS does in the future, would like to see them do something new for a console. And I loved Ouendan & Ouendan 2, easily my favorite games on the DS.

I do agree speedpop, the positive impressions from this board (and those threads) is what caused me to import them. Thanks GAF.

EBA is my favorite. The music is better than Ouendan's and if you disagree there's a 50% chance you're a weeaboo. :(

Still, if this is really an iNis fan thread, it fails for not talking about their other big game (and quite possibly best game):

Plus the replay save and trading features, the Hidden Beat mode, improved image quality (Ouendan 1 looks like shit on a lite), and you have the absolute perfect refinement of the concept. What more could you possibly ask? Seriously. Why fix what's not broken?

If Ouendan 2 is "stagnation", then this industry could use a lot more stagnation in my opinion.

Regardless of those changes, nothing about the core gameplay was changed at all. Don't get me wrong, I adore Ouendan 2, but for the third I hope that they add something new to the gameplay. I trust they can make it work.

Tain said:

I guess you've never played Ouendan 1, so I'll help you out.

The changes from Ouendan 1 are:
+Single-cart Multiplayer for up to 4 people (O1 required multi-carts); plus Coop and Competitive modes.
+Save Replays
+Better Charts
+Skippable intros, which if you had played Ouendan 1, you'd know it is massive. Try having to beat Ready! Steady! Go! more than a dozen times and having to sit through the long intro.
+More songs, including unlockable ones: 15 in O1, 19 in O2.
+New Unlockable Modes: hidden beats, for example.
+As Zeed mentioned, general refinements to the image quality.

Regardless of those changes, nothing about the core gameplay was changed at all.

Welcome to the world of the Music Games genre! They aren't going to change the core gameplay that attracted people. That doesn't make any sense. Hi, Guitar Hero! Hi, DDR!

Oh! Gitaroo Man! :D

I'm crazy about that game, and was ecstatic when I got it on my PAL system. It's quite rare now I believe. My girl has the PSP version, and she loves it too, although it's a bit too hard for her.

Picked up the first Osu! Tatakae! Oeundan! in Japan last year, and I really need to pick up the 2nd part. The first one was amazing though, and the slower song at the end really threw me off-key on the first try. I was thrilled that the last song was Ready Steady Go, since that one's coming from one of my favorite Japanese bands.

But hey, add the tracklists of both games to the OP!

Osu! Tatakae! Oeundan! - Tracklist:

And looking at the tracklist for the second game, I gotta get that one too! "Sekai wa Sore Ai to Yobundazeeeeeee~~!" :D

Fair enough.

I don't feel like spinners add anything to the gameplay and could easily be replaced by something more fun and rhythmic. Not that I won't still buy it, but Ouendan 3 need to do something new or I think people will be disappointed.

This sort of thinking is what led to mines on In The Groove. And those stupid hold steps that aren't actually hold steps but just require you to mash the arrows as fast as possible with no regard to rhythm.

New stuff doesn't always mean progress.

Sure but the 90 song tracklist of IIDX is a huge selling point, whereas the paltry 15-20 songs on Ouendan is much less a deal. I have no intrinsic problem with expansion packs for the record, but usually expansion packs are priced less. See: Daigassou Band Bros. (which is a pretty underrated DS game btw)

Gitaroo Man is such an awesome game, the music is so awesome, everything about it so awesome. I dont really know if I like Gitaroo Man more than than the Ouendan games, id say they are about even for me.
Gitaroo Man is awesome but the PS2 analog sticks are too loose and often made it frustrating. I need to try the game on psp and see if it makes it less frustrating. I'm all for a second Gitaroo Man though.

Still, if this is really an iNis fan thread, it fails for not talking about their other big game (and quite possibly best game):

YES.

The PSP port is easier to play, thanks to the analog nub.

Needs a sequel.

What would you change, exactly?

Changing the core gameplay would kind of make it a different series.

Spinners. There is nothing rhythmic about them and they are difficult for all the wrong reasons.

Aside from that, there isn't anything I would really change, I just think iNiS could think of SOMETHING to supplement the core gameplay.

The first one is definitely my favourite DS game, and it's up there as one of my favourite portable games ever made.

I bought it when I was on vacation in Japan in 2005 with some friends. Just before we left it had been given a good review in Edge (I think it got an 8) and one of my friends picked it up based on that. After being subjected to Kokoro Odoru for hours - he has even less of a sense of rhythm than me, and that's saying something - I bought a copy for myself. I fell in love with it and ended up buying a few more copies to take home as gifts for friends at home :lol

Every time I go back to it I get the warm fuzzy feelings. The gameplay mechanics are almost perfect (EBA and Ouendan 2 improved on those but fell short in other areas IMO), but the choices of music and the style are flawless. Everything from the random nonsense stages to the way they can pull of something completely different like that wonderful Over the Distance sequence.

I eagerly await whatever iNiS does for the Wii. I hope they can make something nearly as good as this.

I'm really surprised that EBA didn't do as well in the states considering the popularity of music games these days. Perhaps not many people knew about it or the presentation turned them off?

If Nintendo releases EBA 2 then they should add better songs (Wasn't Ready, Steady, Go on the Japanese version?) and advertise the game to get the word out there. I really think they have a gem on their hands for the American audience.

Didn't do as well? As well as what? Ouendan 1 sold pretty terribly. If I recall, EBA sold a few hundred thousand pretty quickly.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Ouendan 2 is my favorite, the interesting beat patterns is a huge improvement over the first two games.

If they ever do another game, please take out the freaking spinners. They are so annoying and they ruin the hell out of my DS screen protectors.

Ouendand rocks the shocks of the box

Ouendan 2 is even better. Seriously, there are more songs and better coordinated with the music, the stories are still great, the new cheerleaders are pure moe, the cutscenes are skippable, thanks God. I cannot understand people that thinks that the first one is better, save the innovation that it represented

Oh, I was under the impression that the sales of EBA, while nice, didn't meet expectations.

My thoughts, too! Spinners are the ONLY downside to the game. Everything else is very nice.
