Player's that don't use mics in MP centric games ruin them

You have to appreciate the irony of saying you wont talk to strangers because it ruins your experience then ruining the experience of the rest of your team because you refuse to communicate.

At some point you have to wonder who the actually toxic person is to the game.

There are people who use voice chat for toxic shit and there are people who become toxic on the mic because no one will listen. Both situations end with people who don't want to voice chat feeling convinced that they are right to not do so and leaves them feeling that the toxicity of voice chat is higher than it actually is.

If you are communicative and pleasant to play with the amount of toxic people in your games goes down. There are people who are just toxic and there are people who are toxic because they don't see a way to win but must play the match out anyways. If you take away the second group you will suddenly have a much more positive outlook because the first group is believe it or not, the minority.

What no. That's not irony.

I normally try not to get too carried away when I post here, but this post really, really bugs me.

There is a vast, vast difference between being on the receiving end of racial slurs and having your mic turned off Jesus Christ. This isn't something you "both sides." Like real talk - I don't play multiplayer games online anymore, but back when I did I could barely go without being on the receiving end of racist shit based on my accent.

So for a while when I was playing those games I elected to not have voice on because I figured that I should have the right not to fucking subject myself to racist shitheads. That doesn't make me as toxic as them like, what the fuck.

I'm not going to put myself through a bunch of annoying, racist abuse to increase the number of nonshitty players. I'm just going to either not play the fucking game or play it on mute.

In the end I chose to stay away from online games because it's honestly more stress than fun for me. But if I had chosen to keep playing, I'd have kept my mic off because...well, I have the right not to subject myself to racial slurs.

Now I understand the common complaint most people have with communicating with people they don't know online is that they don't feel like dealing with rude, obnoxious players and as such its best to just use party chat and remain in communication with a few people you know. This baffles me that party chat is the relied upon means to circumvent this issue considering every game these days has a mute button which 100% solves this issue while allowing you to remain in communication with those who are genuinely trying to be helpful and would greatly help your chances of success.

Thoughts?

Fixed for accuracy. Now to the main point,1) People generally don't want to talk to strangers, and not only because of rudeness. But because most of the time the conversation had nothing to do with the game. People don't what to hear about the bar/club/party you went to last night, or your political views, or the warts on your ass that make you uncomfortable when you sit down to game. 2) There are very few games where communication is required to succeed, and if the game requires communication you can be sure most will only play with friends. 3) Mute is not always the best way to deal with the problem, lets take The Division for example. You start up last stand, and every match you have to mute a bunch of people individually, it gets tiring very quickly. And finally 4) the most important thing of all, fuck 8 yr old kids playing T/M rated games, and trying to tell everyone what the fuck to do, I generally don't even want to hear them speak, there are cases where a friend might let their little brother or sister play, and I'll be like fine.

You could make the same argument for how chat channels are toxic and everything thats wrong with multiplayer gaming, so I dont think theres one correct take on the issue.

In an ideal world everyone has a 100 dollar professional headest, is giving the game their full attention, and communicating both clearly and politely.

Realistically, people will gripe on eachother over their broken headset with horrible static, shout profanity at you, blast rap music, have a screaming baby in the other room, a barking dog, and get yelled at by their mom. Possibly at the same time.

Somewhere on the scale is an elegant solution like "players can match themselves together if they care that much" but even that isnt flawless.

No, they absolutely do not need a mic to play MP games. I've dominated and played well in tons of OW games, no mic and I've been doing fine. The game has built in calls which have everything that is required.

It's how they play not if they use the mic or not.

I just want to play for the hour of free time I have and I don't want to talk to some random ass person online while doing so. Sorry OP

I've long since realised antagonising just about anyone about something they're already decided against is more likely to result in them being spiteful than helpful, and that's harmful for trying to win too.

And yet, right now, you're antagonizing the people in this topic into joining open chat, by telling them that they're ruining team games. You understand that, right?

Also, nice avatar.

This thread is not a MP match, though. A forum thread is just that, intended for discussion. It has no impact on how any game goes.

See, I always thought the people ruining multiplayer games were the ones trying to govern how others play.

This thread isn't really doing much to dislodge that belief.

That said, I think Battlegrounds has been the one game where I'll use my mic with randoms if I'm playing with a random squad and people are chatting and don't seem like weirdos.

Quality audiences create quality communication experiences. I'm not sure what Battlegrounds has done so well to draw a sophisticated and engaged crowd, but learn from what they're doing well please.

What if the player cant speak at all or cant speak the common tongue well enough?
What dont games have quick replies? Hm?

It's awesome when you play MP with randos and most people talk and work together. Mostly that happened in R6S. Just play a few rounds of CoD and that's enough for me to not play with headphones.

Also, some games have shittier chat sound quality compared to party chat. The division had this issue.

If it's just me, I'll have my mic available if folks are talking. I can always just pop off my headset if I don't want to hear them.

If there's 2 of us in our party, I'll generally poke my head out briefly so to speak, to see if anyone is in the voice chat. If my buddy and I aren't chatting about something non-game related. If a few people are out there, we'll try it.

3 is borderline, once we hit 4 or 5 of us in the party, I don't generally bother. One or two people can wing it while the rest of us communicate. Overwatch has the voice prompts "My ultimate is ready" "group up" etc which covers the basics.

I get tired of people being dumb. Sorry.

I hear people, especially kids, that are dictating team comp to the point of "hey dude with Torb can you go Lucio" or "hey guy playing Pharah can you go Reinhardt". Well, what if the Torb guy isn't any good at Lucio? Or the Pharah isn't good at Reinhardt?

I can play anyone but a sniper, but not everyone has played like a thousand hours of this.

I mean, we want a good team comp, but "Hey we need a tank and a healer, any volunteers" would be ok. But no, the dude playing McCree is dictating who plays what character.

Or people ordering people when to attack or what to do or whatever like he's the fucking General of the team.

And that's not even covering all the racist / homophobic / sexist people. I don't want anyone giving the girl that we play with on our team shit either, especially since she plays a lot of Hanzo and Genji (she's pretty good).

I just got Overwatch and that's y I've just been sticking to Quick Play + Random heroes in arcade mode, don't have access to a mic yet so I don't wanna fuck anything up for other ppl in competitive play..

I wouldn't want to talk to someone with such a flagrant disrespect for apostrophes tbh.

Edit: On topic, some of my very best and my very worst gaming experiences have involved voice chat.

I don't wanna talk on a mic, and I sure as hell don't wanna hear others talking aswell. I just wanna enjoy the game without dealing with other people during it, I get enough of people's crap outside of gaming.

<extreme bouts of cussing and outrageous demands>

*turns mic on*

You're and idiot.

Muted.

Reported.

*Mic off, continue playing*

What is interesting to me is that a lot of people seem to not give a shit about mic communication in MP. Yet Nintendo gets so much flak for their convoluted setup, which sounds like most people wouldn't use anyway.

Just do what I do OP and get a reliable group together to start playing with and railroad through teams that don't communicate. And if they think it's bullshit and get pissed off 'cause they're fighting a team that works together?

giphy.gif

Not my fucking problem.

This is what happened in Battlefield a lot last gen. We'd usually have 4-8 player squads (and on rare occasions 10-12), go into games and would usually completely destroy the other team. Most of the time we didn't even have to really try, it's just we played sooo much together (both BF and other games) that we had very high chemistry. It got so bad that I had to create a rule where we would always let the enemy team have at least one flag so they could at least be able to leave their spawn.

Anyway, yeah, if you don't want to use a mic, that's fine, I completely get it and won't fault you for it. Just don't bitch about losing to other teams that do.

This is why I've started gravitating toward fighters again. When my friends aren't on but I want to play something competitive, I'll just load up Smash, Street Fighter or Tekken. Don't have to depend on anyone but yourself, and when you lose it's nobody's fault but yours*.

*this is assuming the fighting game is relatively well-balanced, doesn't have shit netcode, and/or isn't full of bugs/glitches.

What no. That's not irony.

You're right. The actual irony would be saying you don't use a mic because others ruin your experience and then getting destroyed by the enemy team whom are working well together because, you know, they're actually communicating. That'll really ruin your experience.

As I mentioned before, I don't fault anyone for not using game chat, like for reasons such as the ones you've mentioned, but at the same time people should recognize that not using it can still also "ruin your experience." Because eventually you're going to run into groups on the other side that communicate and you're going to get destroyed. And probably not want to play the game anymore... because it's no fun getting outplayed so hard that you literally can't do anything but either sit in spawn or feed the other team kills.

Sort of a catch-22 situation.

Talking is for scrubs, just use monomania and read each others minds

Sort of a catch-22 situation.

I'm confused. The catch 22 is that you're better than me so you use a mic and using a mic makes you better than me?

The arguments for using a mic don't really entice me to speak to mic users.

Edit: i should elaborate my contention. I don't have a problem with my play not using a mic, it seems op has a problem with his play when i don't use a mic. Not my problem, as they say.

Umm... because I'll get shit for sounding like a 10-year old girl? Yeah, no thanks. That already happened once and I don't want to get that again even if I want to talk to my teammates using mic most especially in Overwatch's Team voicechat. I only use mic when I play with my friends and that's only in Group.

While I do understand that communication is crucial to winning a match, the amount of toxicity I've encountered in Overwatch alone is enough to make me go 'Nope' on communicating through voicechat. Perhaps I just get queue'd with assholes too often when I play by myself.

I'm not ever going to have the time or inclination to organize a team with mics. I actually get a kick out of teams that do in basic competitive play lists. But if you're Joe mlg or whatever I guess it makes sense.

I just don't get why people get into competitive matches in OW if they are not going to communicate. Synergy is one of the biggest deal breakers in this sort of games and without a mic and the immediacy it provides it goes down the toilet.

Absolutely agree, OP. If you're playing a MP game that requires teamwork, it's such a hassle when you get a non-mic random.

The threat of 'abusive' mic'd people is overblown... I play mp every night and rarely run into it, and we just mute it when it does happen. More importantly, after awhile of playing you'll befriend lots of friendly people and soon enough never need to deal with randoms on your team unless one of your crew isn't on that night.

Ultimately, though, having someone not on mic is a -massive- hindrance to a good team.

I don't even understand why people would want to play w/ no mic or communication... it's team based for a reason.

I'm confused. The catch 22 is that you're better than me so you use a mic and using a mic makes you better than me?

No... Did you even read? Here:

"I don't talk because assholes ruin my experience" (fair enough)

*gets destroyed by people who communicate.* *experience ruined anyway*

I wasn't even talking about me in that second part, just teams in general.

EDIT: And I should note that this obviously doesn't happen all the time, but it's happened enough in my experience.

And also games have gotten better at avoiding matching individuals against organized groups, but that still won't stop this from happening against randoms working together.

You're going to get torn apart for this post but I agree with you entirely.

Getting into a comp game in Overwatch and having 3 people not using mics is pure suffering.

Edit: To be clear, I mean specifically in competitive playlists and such. In regular modes, quick play, etc, I don't think you have any obligation or expectation to use a mic.

In competitive modes you're limiting the team's ability to work together by not communicating.

This is why I play non-competitive MP modes only.

No I'm not going to use a mic if I don't want to lol. If competitive queues matter so much to you, why the hell are you playing with pugs in the first place? Fuck outta here. Knowing that some of you rage over this is wonderful.

We need to stop equating people talking about this topic as if were name calling those who choose not to communicate in MP games. How you got to your hyperbolic post is beyond me when that poster pointed out, to those choosing not to communicate in a team based competitive atmosphere, they are in fact hindering their team's ability to win. Now did he/she say they were bad people because of it? No, just that it might be ruining other's experience.

?? What does 'toxic person' mean to you?

Completely agree in a cooperative and ranked mode. It's one of the things that burned me out on Overwatch. It became increasingly frustrating to play with any non pre-made teams when only half the people were communicating.

Not having a mic in that setting is the equivalent of showing up to a baseball game without a glove and telling everyone you'll just play with your bare hands.

If it's too much of a burden or barrier, then the mode isn't for you. Be more considerate.

I've been tempted to get one for Friday the 13th but haven't found any standalone mics yet, do they not exist? Are they always paired with headphones? I don't understand why that method is popular considering they are two completely different things.

I'll stay in my 3-4 person party and continue to put in work, thanks. The whole team doesn't need to communicate to succeed, and I can assure you, you do not want to listen to whatever me and my chucklefuck friends happen to be talking about.

I don't use the mic at nights due to family. But I've been using the mic less and less after hearing the comments that people make.

I just want to play Overwatch with chill people for once.

I'm somewhere in the middle on the talking vs not talking during online matches debate. Often it's very helpful and should be done, though I don't feel it's always absolutely nessessary. I'll talk if something needs to be said, but I'll occasionally spend full games saying nothing at all.

I do think, however, that by far the main reason people don't/won't talk online mostly comes down to how shy/embarrassed/worried that people will think they have a dorky voice a lot of game players fret about.

If you feel like something needs to be said, say it, don't be shy.

You need to find some people outside of the game. The odds were never in your favor for good communication in any team based game, whether forced team chat or not. You can try to collect a nice circle of friends by adding randoms, but that's harder. Don't judge your silent teammates, and mute the toxic ones.

I had a standalone mic on the ps3. It's just too much trouble since if you're playing with the sound coming from the T.V. it will play back on the mic and is just annoying to everyone else hearing the echo. Or alternatively, you play with no sound which is not ideal. Honestly, the cheap mics that come with the PS4 and Xbox are good enough for just about anything.

I'd rather lose a match than win a match getting yelled at by random assholes on the Internet. It's not a catch-22, nor is it irony, my primary goal when playing a game is to have fun. Winning is fun, but not at that cost.

Also I've got 150 hours in Overwatch, have never used a mic, and have never been steamrolled by a team using voice chat.

Is it the players that don't use mics, or the abusive players that make getting on a mic or listening into voice chat a chore?

Stop singing in my ear or screaming racial slurs and maybe I'll feel like leaving voice chat on and joining in.

I don't even own a mic for my PC and usually disable voice chat if it's an option. Not only do I not want to hear people throwing insults and racial slurs and whatever other garbage may come across voice chat, but I have plenty of anxiety already without being subjected to cyberbullying.
