I thought the game was 60fps on the X and Pro?
It targets 60fps. That's different from actually consistently hitting a steady 60fps. According to ACG, it drops to 30s on X/Pro, even worse with the base consoles. And 1080p (900p on base One) no matter what console.

I don’t buy the reviews just yet. Especially when ubisoft releases a copy paste open world game every 3 months.

Oh shit, they made mad max? Reviewers were off the mark on that one too. If that’s the case their pedigree should guarantee a great game.

It must not hit all the ubisoft bullet points...
It's the Mad Max team from Avalanche and Id peeps. I don't see how it could be a bad game based on that combo alone. The only thing I'm hearing is that the campaign is a bit short but with how huge Days Gone is it'll be a welcome change for me personally

Does this let me choose to play as a man or woman? Or is it just STRAIGHT WHITE MAIL?
Disregard! You can play as guy or "girl".

What doesn't look good? Most scores are in the 7-8 range with a few a little lower and some a little higher.

I'd argue that is pretty good.
I am not the wealthiest person so full price games have a very hard time for me when it comes to "being worth it".
Same with Days Gone. Both games look okay and are maybe not bad, but 60-70€ is a lot of money for me and I have to be
a bit careful with it seeing where I spend my money. Other things have higher priority.

Sorry did I just read it drops to 30fps... on X? Even at 1080p...?

But it isn’t exactly amazing to look at, what the hell? I mean sure it’s not exactly terrible, it games have exceeded this visual quality for a while with much better performance, and at way higher a resolution?

Man...

I'm really looking forward to diving in to this one, after I platinum Days Gone which should be today if I'm lucky. Personally I think the art style is a welcome change of pace compared to the typical brown and grey color palettes, which I recall even the first game being critiqued for. Its partly the reason I prefer Asian titles since western games are generally very same-y when they go for a more realistic look and palette.

Am I alone in saying I would much rather they locked the game at 30fps? I mean look 60fps is the tits, it really is, but if your game is dropping from 60 to 30 ish, that really does feel like ass when playing.

Man... Looking forward to digital foundry in this one :)

Personally, as much as i like the Far Cry games, at times travelling between the outposts, I tend to get annoyed at having enemies shoot at me and get in my way....I'm fine with an open world where there is no activity outside of the outposts. The graphics to me look nice so I can enjoy them at my leisure between firefights.

I think wutnau may have misheard, i think ACG says drops to low 50's and maybe lower, drops to 30fps cap on base consoles.

After seeing RPS review I'm also worried about the open world aspect but the gunplay seems too good to ignore. Feels like a true FPS but open world instead of a First Person stealth/shooter/RPG like many popular titles.

Bethesda is merciless with the prices in my region (almost double the DMCV price!Absurd!) so I will need to wait for a sale. Hope they cut the price before the FPS king, Doom Eternal, arrives.

If this game flops (which I don’t think so) I hope the damn western developers learns that going linear isn’t a bad idea and not everything must be open fucking world

I don't care where (just far)
I say it every time and the same people will say I am wrong but here we go:

I don't think open world is an issue.

Good games are good, bad games are bad.

A good open world game is good. A bad open world game is bad. A good linear game is good, a bad linear game is bad.

Open world, by itself, does not dictate the good or bad.

People build op "Open World" into this industry boogeyman that is ruining their gaming experience but it really isn't the case, unless they are letting it be like that.

Open world design, at the core, is not an issue.

I'm having a hell of a good time with Mad Max right now, so that formula works for me. I'm sure I'll enjoy Rage 2, although it'll have to wait a couple of years.

I would say the reviewers are giving companies breaks that have a higher production value i.e. Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to mind, even though as a game its sucks, meaning good solid game play mechanics. Also, they somehow think the quality or the experience is somehow going to magically be tailored as they are in 7-13 hour linear games.... its never going to be the same.

Most reviewers don't even seem to like gaming to me, even know what modern game mechanics are nor really enjoying them. They'll rate a video game movie high i.e. Red Dead Redemption 2. For the record I still think RDR2 was pretty neat and I would probably rate it high but probably warn people that enjoy good game play - this ain't it.... its a very poor game in many ways.

For the vast amount of reviewers:

Production values/NPCs/Cut-scense/Story > Game play mechanics

Like what spoke about in the Days Gone OT, if this is an average or low open world game, exactly what are these reviewers saying is good or great? (its all relative) I just don't listen to the vast majority of gaming sites as they really are out of touch.

I'm glad the game is not as over-the-top as the marketing implied. Rage and Mad Max knew the importance of downtime (and even Just Cause 2 had plenty of serenity). The open world design and pacing being like Mad Max sounds perfect to me.

Pre-ordered on Steam - it's expensive for me but Bethesda's client is awful.

Doesn't look to be dropping at all on Xbox One X

Open world is always better. Linear is so old school and dated imo. I like to do what i want, when i want, and how i want.
Oh and 7's and 8's are not bad scores, ffs.
Well, when it's linear, at least, devs can focus on making their mechanics more profound and optimised. It has a direct impact on the overall feel and atmosphere of the game. But it's just my opinion :) thanks for answering

It’s feels like most western developers no longer care about putting proper level design in their games so they just go for “open world” instead.

I personally hope western developers obsession with making every game “open world” slow down a bit so we could see proper level design.
Yes exactly, quality over quantity. We hear it often but It seems like they can't see it yet :/

Well I watched some vids and....it looks shockingly dull and not as off the wall crazy as advertised or as I expected. The shotgun looks weak too, especially coming off of Days Gone where it has one of the best shotguns in recent memory. Also that hot pink and neon bullshit is gross and I was already smothered with it in Far Cry New Dawn.

Not a fan of the tone either. It’s comparable to the OG Turtles movie from 1990 that everyone bitched about being too dark. Then Secret of the Ooze came out and was way more comical and lighthearted to appease the complainers. This is Rages Secret of the Ooze.

Summer drought is starting early I see. Damn.

No, I haven't done PC gaming in ages - I think you better wait for some of the pixels pushers for that.

As to the performance, I only went by the ACG video (and it's entirely possible the comments on performance were based on a pre-release version). The analysis posted a bit above looks much better (although 1080p is still quite "ehh" for the mid-gen refreshes).

Don't know if you guys know him, but MrmattyPlays (huge Bethesda Game Studios fan) really enjoyed the game as well. Interesting how some outlets say the game world really isn't all that great and I believe pc gamer even called it dull, but Karak from ACG and Matty say the exact opposite.

playing it on XBox X. with an LG C8. hate to say it, but it does look shitty. like there's pixel crawl and just looks like it's grease smeared if that makes sense. didn't think that 1080p would look that bad, but it's almost a deal breaker. Only got like 40 minutes in so I'm still going to give it a shot, but definitely is far from crisp. Perhaps I need to turn my tv to 1080p to match? No clue. Gunplay is super tight though.

Yeah the game uses heavy CA and I also suspect something else, be it over sharpen. I haven’t seen it’s AA solution either yet, which I suspect may be fxaa and taa based. Trouble is, with foliage/alpha dithering and LOD dither (if in use) it would look very rough at such a low res...

Lol... low res... 1080p isn’t even a low res... but with shit like CA shoved in your face... it really does fall apart quickly.

I’ll be able to see native wise tomorrow on my 65” LG OLED. And I do fear that it will look like ass and force me to play on the shitty 1080p 40” LCD upstairs... Amazing but that shitty upstairs tv saves my ass on these types of things a lot.

Probably going to just give it a run on PC. i am all about graphics, but the gameplay is pretty awesome from what I've seen so far.

To add onto your point, the main issue that plagues a lot of open world games this generation is the lack of density. The map size means little if there isn't much to do per digital square mile and you're left with a lot of downtime.

Yeah. I subscribe for his BL content. Opinions like his are what me think I'll really like it despite the negatives.

Graphics don’t matter for me to enjoy a game. Some of my all time faves are games people would throw up at now. I mean you can’t beat DKC2 for that sort of game no matter how advanced you get.

But when it comes to shooters, and open world ones at that, resolution is just as important as frame rate. If you can’t see what you’re shooting, well...

But linear games with proper level design has its advantage that open world game just don’t have.

To me it just getting tiring to see all we are getting from western games is open world.

The people that don't like open world games keep saying don't make more open world games. The people that don't like battle royal games keep saying don't make more battle royal games? The people that don't like racing games keep saying don't make more racing games. The people that don't like online shooters keep saying stop with the COD and BF madness. The people that don't like single player adventure games keep saying for Sony to stop making those. The people that don't like sports games keep saying haven't we had enough Madden already. The people that don't like GaaS games keep telling EA to put a stick in it. The people that hate 1st person hiding horror games plead to the world stop having them hide in lockers for a hour.........etc. etc.

This game always looked like crap.

The first game was a really solid “id does mad max” shooter with great graphics, gameplay, and art style.

This one is a concoction of focus groups that decided young people really like borderlands, deadpool humor, memes, and rainbow colors.

Nope. I believe this was actually the first BGS game he really couldn't bring himself to give any praise to.

I was afraid of this. Some of the footage already showed this soft look. And you can clearly see aliasing on the weapons. Also it being only 1080p sure doesn't help. I really would have liked options here. A option to play 4K/30fps. Or at least 1440p on X maybe.

Don't think so. His review video is titled "Disappointing is an Understatement" and he rated it "do not buy."

Yep. He makes good videos. And he's not afraid to admit mistakes. When Fallout 4 came out he had nothing but praise and really was just exeggerating and in hindsight he realized that too and admitted it.

I think story is by far what most reviewers value most. Because 98% of them want to writes books and games, writing is what they value. Tlou, rdr2, and witcher 3 are mediocre gameplay-wise, but get top grades because of the writing. The reverse is almost never true.
