Sooo.. that "rape joke" during the Killer Instinct demo [Microsoft apologizes]

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Probably because they think rape is, like, bad.

As do I. Still don't try to make something like this in to something it clearly wasn't.

You obviously don't follow many female gaming personalities on Twitter.

They weren't looking to be offended. Patricia Hernandez, maybe, but not the vast majority of women that were blowing up my Twitter feed the moment that happened.

I don't really do the Twitter thing, so yeah.. I wouldn't have a clue on that... but I have found a lot of people who do the Twitter thing tend to be pretty dramatic.. so I honestly wouldn't be surprised you'd see outrage on there.

I didn't even notice this.....probably because it's nothing.

Grow a backbone, bloody hell.

Over reacting to crap like this does no one favours, it just increases animosity and further reinforces barriers between people.

I find the staged nature of the banter and gameplay more offensive; it's so awkward and cringeworthy to watch.

Why? This is a manufactured controversy then.

Keep in mind, it is a choice to be offended. You have a choice in that matter, being offended is a personal choice one makes. I really wish people used that energy on something else.. because easily offended people are some of the worst people to be around.

I find people who excuse all sorts of terrible behavior just so they can say they're "never offended and being offended is a choice" to be some of the worst people I've ever been around, myself. I mean, you act like simply pointing out that this was a rape joke, and asking that maybe they should keep that in mind next time is wanting to go personally to Microsoft HQ and blow up the building. It's simply pointing something out.

Also, it's really easy to say it's a choice to be offended when something doesn't effect you.

It wasn't even a rape joke to begin with.

As someone said previously, it's a manufactured controversy. It's just people looking for something to gossip about.

The context it was used in, made sense - only people that put in their mind and construed it (because of some sick thought process) that he was implying rape are to be called out for their extremely dumb stance.

This is the internet. People will find anything to get offended about (or troll about), not to mention to talk about - especially with the recent negative experiences with Microsoft/Xbox.

Jesus christ, could you stop saying that people who noticed what the phrase was were just looking for it? I didn't have a bingo chart out hoping I could take a shot when MS did something I could falsely say was a rape joke and brag about it on the internet. I reacted the same way a lot of people on twitter did. I simply went "did..microsoft just make a rape joke? really?" and pointed it out.

Well, you got me. 5 people chose that.. must be true then.

..or people just don't search that phrase all that often.. which is the much more likely option.

You realize how absurd it is using that GIF to prove that it means rape is.. right?

Most Yahoo Answers don't get a lot of votes and thumbs up. But anyways, some dude said he couldn't find anything on google so I posted that image. It's obviously not as popular as jokes like "do you even lift" or "please be excited" (in gaming), but the meaning does exist. Not sure why you're fighting so hard to not acknowledge it... actually it's kind of funny how hot and bothered you are by this.

As do I. Still don't try to make something like this in to something it clearly wasn't.

Except they think it was. I was reading comments where people immediately thought it was a reference to rape. They didn't come up with this interpretation later as part of some nefarious plot to cause trouble.

Haha, exactly. We didn't sit around in a dark room in a castle with a thunderstorm outside planning out god damn talking points. It was just the natural reaction we had, because (!!!) we've heard that phrase before used in that context.

It was friendly banter. It was used in context of a fighting game, appropriately. There was never any intention, or any outright thought of it being a "rape joke". It was the way people decided to take that information and construe it. Listen, I can get all philosophical and shit over something so insignificant, but this is just borderline insane for anyone to argue that it was a "rape joke". It would make more sense in the context of him "teabagging" her player character in an FPS or something like that, but saying for her to give up, stand there and take it as it will be over soon in A FIGHTING GAME CONTEXT, it seriously has no rape joke connotation in that. It's just friendly harmless banter.

Holy crap. The way things are going, I better not say "suck on that!" next time, because everyone will think that's a rape joke as well.

Yeah, this is REALLY projecting.

There's a ton of shit you can't equate to that.. it's context... there was nothing relating to rape in what happened in that video.

Also, I love how people misquote what he said later on to try to prove he was meaning it that way.

This is the definition of creating controversy when there was none.

I've used that very phrase to friends when talking smack.. for as far back as I can remember... or variations of it.. never once was it meant to be sexual.

BTW, that doesn't exactly prove your point. Doesn't prove at all that the only meaning is rape at all.

Did antitrop say that the only meaning is rape? No. Stutte was saying that he or she found NO connection to rape when googling it, so antitrop is showing that there is a connection.

If the connotation of rape for that phrase is so high that it is among the top results on google, then it isn't the type of thing that should be said during an international press conference.

NO. IT. DOES. NOT.

Jesus, it has more of a direct relation to euthanization *if anything*

So you're suggesting that the phrase referred to either 1. Nothing (??) or 2. "Euthanization" (by which I'll assume you mean euthanasia)? Then you concede that if, hypothetically, the phrase was a reference to rape, then it would be bad?

Holy crap.

Because fighting game banter has never ever had rape references in them. I mean, I've only played two online fighting games and I could tell you how depressingly common it is.

I'm not saying it has never happened, nor that it will stop. But in this context was it a "rape joke"? No it wasn't. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

You're arguing a completely different matter altogether. You are bringing in some sort of ulterior agenda to this that doesn't involve the material at hand.

Friendly banter or not it can still be perceived as a rape joke. People trying to explain it away because of the context are idiots. They could have trash talked in innumerable ways and they still managed to pick the worst way possible.

Just because people decide to perceive something as a rape joke, doesn't mean it is. That is extremely subjective and moronic. People are free to do what they want. But when they go on some sort of idiotic agenda or attack because they perceived something that just wasn't there, well then those are the idiots.

And as others have said, this nitpicking projection for some sort of drama or gossip or whatever reason is really just baffling.

The phrase "suck on that!" is widely understood to have a sexual meaning, yes...

It's not like a terrible crime against humanity or something if you say it. But you really shouldn't say it at a press conference. Might look a tad unprofessional.

Actually no. It's more like a one-upmanship. It's like saying "beat that", or "in your face". It has nothing to do with it being inappropriate. But then we can get into how it can be inappropriate because YOU decided to perceive it in that light. Which you have a right to, but if we really think about it, it's YOU who is looking at what is being said in a sick way, not the person saying it, nor the underlying meaning of the phrase. Plain and simple.

I'm done trying to argue my point. What I have said is sufficient. Some of you will obviously go against my view no matter what, and we will just keep going in circles.

Have a good one.

I'm really not because the phrase is a very common reference to rape. Just because it can mean other things too, doesn't mean it wasn't awkward and a very very poor choice of words. Just because you don't see it that way, doesn't mean others don't. Obviously. And that doesn't make them overly sensitive and just looking to bring an "agenda" into things.

But then we can get into how it can be inappropriate because YOU decided to perceive it in that light. This is going to turn into an Inception plot twist where you say we're the ones actually telling rape jokes, isn't it.

Surely you can see how the phrase "suck on that" is inappropriate, while the phrase "beat that" is just tame. I mean, you seriously cannot be that obtuse.

I can never understand when people say these types of phrases have nothing to do with being inappropriate. "Suck on that" very clearly comes from "Suck my dick," as in, "I'm so much better than you, you should suck my dick." While there may be nothing explicit in the original phrase, it definitely serves as an example of the patriarchal ideology embedded within our language. Whether it's conscious or not, it does reinforce such ideas.

This post sums up my feelings completely, I have nothing further to contribute.

I wish I could bold that sentence twice to make it even more conspicuous.

I kind of feel like we're fishing for more stuff to complain about here guys... Whether is was intended to be a joke geared towards the now infamous rape deal or not we're never going to really know, but it really came across to me as just normal smack talking in the midst of 'owning' someone. Maybe I'm just naive though who knows.

I guess socially slow is the answer. Who uses google to determine what expressions or jokes mean? Im goin off my whole life and how term has been applied.

Also, be aware sayings can take on new meanings.

I know there this a lot of MS hate right now and you guys are getting off to every inkling of bad press for them. But you need to relax, why would MS even think of making a rape joke during a conference.
Yeah who uses a search device to find out meanings and phrases...

Even before I noticed the meme, if anyone, particularly a guy, said to me "it will be over soon, just let it happen" I would have been creeped out.

Oh and no one has said they intentionally made a rape joke but that they should have caught the fact it could be interpreted as an inappropriate joke.

But keep playing this up as console fanboys looking for something to blame MS on.

So I looked it up (the exact phrasing used by the producer) on google, and all I found was links back to the manufactured outrage at the story we're all talking about. Oh and one WoW post about some purple monster... thing. Would you mind letting us all know what google search you're doing? Because googling what he said is giving me nothing.
The first thing I got was the shhhh rape meme. However I only wrote the "just let it happen" because I knew the full joke would link to this controversy.

Check google images.

Just let it happen, it will be over soon = Rape?

If anything this says something about society rather gaming society, how does one make the leap from simple banter which i took to mean, youre getting beaten but the beating will be over soon, to mean RAPE?

Is it the fact that it was a girl who received the comment, or does that not really matter?

I guess this is a "rape joke" the way saying "I'm going to DESTROY you" to your friend before a game is a death threat...?

Yep, except you shouldn't say it on a live stage to a person of the opposite gender when the phrase could have an extremely negative connotation in other scenarios. It's not a huge deal but people should be sensitive to that stuff. To you "rape jokes" may be hilarious and have nothing to do with actual rape but they still refer to someone being dominated forcefully. Again, it has nothing to do with sex but those jokes revolve around an unwanted action of a violating nature and that can strike a chord with rape victims and family and friends of rape victims. They should have used better judgment considering they represent a massive corporation and had thousands of eyes and ears paying attention. It doesn't hurt to be sensitive and watch what you say.

The gender of the receiver matters to a lot of people, and doesn't to some. I'd really want the reverse to happen, where the guy is the receiver and the girl the giver; I'd like to see if Hernandez would make an article out of that, or who would have to say what about it.

Hi Gaf, I've been lurking for months and seeing all the frenzy over 'rape jokes' and 'sexism'. I usually keep out of these discussions because they're usually pretty pointless as everyone usually sticks stubbornly to their own opinions without acknowledging others, but what the hell, why not jump in.

You're all making pretty good points here. It's unintentional. It's totally harmless. People overreacted. But it IS a rape joke. It's just something that's used really often especially in a fighting/aggressive/masculine situation which means some gamers are de-sensitised to it and don't think it's a big deal.

Whether or not that's a bad thing is up to any of us. Racist slurs used to be 'acceptable' and 'normal' back in the 1920's. The reason PC issues like these get brought up so often these days is because we're going through a time of change. If we choose to hold on to the mainstream as it is now, we could end up the hated minority in the future.

I'd rather make the effort to support positive change than fight people over my right to insinuate rape, however harmless.

tl;dr - Don't be old.

A man can be raped however it's very rare for it to be by a women due to size difference and generally a man being able to overpower a women.

You aren't seriously going to argue that male rape by women is as common as the reverse and has the same social stigma attached?

You did see this one that took literally about 5 minutes after the presser right? I must not be getting the joke

They probably didn't see it but the Joke is from It's always sunny. Dennis says women don't object to sex on a boat when it is out to sea because of the implication of what would happen to them if they refused.

I'm not going to argue that, because it's not true. Still happens though.

The social stigma for that? Idk southpark did a good job covering an aspect of it.

I didn't think anything sex or rape related during that, it was trash talk in my interpretation. Not a good choice of words, but still not worth to make a huge issue out of it.
I freaking hate the extreme PC culture due to people looking for something to be offended with.
Saying "just let it happen" to a person (rape is rape with either sex) when you're owning them in a video game is just trash talk.

If there were two dudes up there this would never have come up. But since it was a woman people have gone out of their way to read more into the comment that was intended. Something tells me these people also have a problem with the number of women in the gaming industry. But you can't have it both ways. Women can't be truly part of the industry while having special protection afforded to them. I know that people are talking about the comment being made itself more than protecting the lady on the stage but her gender is the only reason people are taking issue with it. How can women in this industry fit in if their gender is going to come into play during interactions like this one? Especially when they're held under such ridiculous scrutiny, where dorky banter is compared to rape humor.

haha, agree with him? That comment by Bakhtanians is so fucking outrageously offensive and stupid. I just posted it in terms of its similarity with this incident.

Good to see that the majority of the fighting game community pushed back against that offensive notion that sexual harassment is part of the fighting game community.

I've said quite a bit to friends on this subject.

It wasn't a rape joke.

People taking it as a rape joke are applying their own context to it, rather thank taking it in the context that it was presented.

It's like me saying 'I'm getting off" in reference to gaming, and someone thinking that I'm actually masturbating.

Get over it.
