Square on DQ11 Switch: Still planned but no announcement. Can't discuss release date.

Yes, they were, on pc, using UE4, prepare to port on PS4 and something something powerful current generation console code name NX.

And then they got Switch dev kit and realize its spec.

Horii "wtf is this shit?"
Miyake "Saitoooooooooooo!"

Base on untrue story.
Considering that ninten do was showing the concept of the switch off to early devs and that devs thought the switch was real cheap for what it's packing I don't think square was unaware of how "weak" it was, hell it most likely gotten stronger since then especially when it comes to RAM

Tales from your ass then. I figured.

You'd think that instead of coming up with ridiculous conspiracy theories, you'd simply look at all the other times Square Enix released a game on PC slightly late and with little fanfare (like Dragon Quest Heroes). But no, it has to be a conspiracy.

I don't know about Dragon Quest Heroes but, they removed leaked trailers of Nier with steam logo because reasons and don't speak shit about it until 2 weeks before the launch.

If DQH was anything like that, probably Square Enix had same deal with Sony. Why would a third party want don't speak about a version and have 0 marketing on other platform?

Because they're a Japanese company, don't care for PC (possibly due to the old piracy bogeyman) and want to prioritise console sales? Just look at Sega, Valkyria Chronicles was a huge success on Steam and as of now, they still haven't announced a PC port of Valkyria Revolution.

The idea Square Enix's weird behaviour HAD to be Sony's fault, even though Square Enix Japan have a history of treating their PC ports weirdly, just strikes me as coming up with the most convenient and laziest excuse.

What if Nintendo is helping to localize the game for the West and publish in the West? That might mean the lack of a Switch announcement is waiting to see if they can finish localizing the game for a global Switch launch in time for the PS4 and 3DS Japan release. Then it's a Western timed exclusive for the Switch and 3DS until SE does the PS4 version some months later.

What if Nintendo has bought Square Enix and they want to announce the purchase in the Nintendo Direct today, with a global launch of the Switch version directly after the Nintendo Direct? Then it's a timed exclusive for the Switch, and the PS4 launch is only happening due to a prior, yet unannounced deal with Sony.

Probably aren't in a big rush because most sales are going to come from 3DS anyways, may as well take your time to make a good port and meanwhile the install base will grow.

PS4 will be first priority for titles like this until Switch overtakes it in hardware sales in Japan (which won't take long). Then Japanese games will be built around the Switch and up ported to PS4.

weirder things have happened and all... but a mainline (and offline) DQ releasing on a console in its first year is just bonkers. i can't believe it's something people expect

mainline DQ is always prioritized the highest install base

This "3DS version upgraded" nonsense needs to stop. It's either the PS4 version or a custom one.

Why not? Wouldn't you like a definitive 3DS port?

- It's a fact that a PS4 port will run/look worst than the original.
- A custom one for a console with the smallest userbase? Yeah sure.

Yes, I'm sure SE wants to prioritze a new system with currently about 1.5 mil in its western fanbase over a console that has a western fanbase over 50 million. Step out of the bubble for a moment man.

Sure, just like Japanese games were built for the Wii and up ported to PS3 and 360.

I don't think that's going to happen.

Yeah ok. If it does overtake ps4 sales in japan it will take years and not even sure it will ever surpass ps4 numbers. Ps4 is the world wide market leader which matters the most

You can't "port" a 3DS game to a console vastly more powerful. It doesn't make sense in any way when you think about it from a technical aspect.
3DS DQXI rendered in 1080p with better models, textures, effects etc = PS4 DQXI. In a sense, DQXI on 3DS is a downgraded port from the PS4 version. But the technical gap is so huge that they obviously didn't make a port and made the game from scratch instead.

What if they cannot talk about the Switch version because the game requires a hardware add-on to reach PS4 hardware power? That add-on could be announced in today's Nintendo Direct.

This is a realistic theory. I'm going with this.

That wont happen. PS4 is still the market leader in the West and developers are not going to go backwards to make switch the main sku if their ambition is Worldwide success.

The Switch will probably start getting versions announced with PS4 next year though.

In Japan its very possible that happens end of next year.

If you think the PS4 version is their top priority in Japan, you've got some re-thinking to do.

It's the 3DS version.

Releasing a Switch version next year will get a lot of repeat buyer$.

Also, the Switch version will undoubtedly look worse than the PS4 (and Pro) version, so they might be able to avoid comparisons if they release them separately.

I think you mean Nintendo bought Sony. They're buying Square Enix on Friday.

It's honestly just strange that they're being wishy washy about the release date potentially being the same as the other versions. That sounds much more like there's an NDA/agreement on discussing it rather than development issues.

Having a hard time considering playing a game like this on PS4, even though I enjoyed VIII on PS2. The Switch has changed my habits with Breath of the Wild.

Don't worry guys, the PS4 version will do so badly that it will bankrupt both Sony and SE and they'll come crawling back to Nintendo.

So they announced the Nintendo-exclusive Western localisation in the Direct just now. You guys were right, they couldn't talk about the releasedate yesterday because Nintendo wanted to make the announcement today!

I would guess it would take 2.5 years for the Switch total to exceed PS4 total but I expect with Switch having superior sales than the PS4 in the same time period that the Switch will be the lead platform in 1.5 to 1.75 years.

Lead platform for what? Bigger games still will be PS4 focused because of the WW reach.

That's highly unlikely. The 3DS is at over 22 million sold in Japan if the Switch does even moderately well in Japan ir will overtake the PS4 in 1-2 years

PS4 is at 70 million worldwide. It's about to outsell 3DS worldwide in a matter of months. FFXV and Persona 5 greatly increased sales of PS4 in Japan. There are even more Japanese games coming this year for PS4, high profile and low profile. You underestimate just how big PS4 is becoming there.

Nothing is touching PS4 this gen. It's outpacing PS2's sales and selling at a faster rate than it ever did. X1 is treading along swiftly behind it and it's going to come in second. Switch might get good sales in Japan but it's not touching PS4 or X1 this gen and that's just reality.

Anyway, the reason why they're not announcing it is because PS4/3DS are the main platforms. The game doesn't exist for the Switch yet. They are focusing their development on those versions and once those are out...they'll talk about. It's common sense. Those were the main platforms. The Switch version is a port, most likely a downgraded port of the PS4 version. You're not going to be hearing about it for awhile.

Maybe I missed something but I didn't think the PS4 was anywhere near 70 million yet. More like 58 million or so, quite a big difference. He isn't underestimating the PS4 in Japan at all. Even best case scenario it will struggle to sell much more than half of what the 3DS will lifetime.

You're right that the PS4 will easily sell more than the switch or xbone. I disagree about the xbone outselling the switch though. It'll be lucky to sell more than 45-50 million life time.

You still have to do a lot of homework for Japan, wrong at almost everything.

So they announce the game coming to NX before any other thing in the world had been announced for the system (pretty much). But now that the system is out and people own it and and are playing games on it.... now they're being secretive?

:\

So there's a story going around on Japanese blogs (here's Hachima Kikou's), which I'm reluctant to post on Gematsu because I can't verify it, but I figured I'd share it here.

Before that, to recap, Square Enix PR told WSJ: "Support is planned, but there is nothing to announce today. We cannot say today whether the release date is the same as or different than the PlayStation 4 and 3DS versions."

OK, so a 2ch user apparently e-mailed Square Enix's Japanese support e-mail (which you can do here) asking about the Switch version. This was the response (posted in the form of a smartphone Gmail screenshot): "Nintendo Switch support for Dragon Quest XI is currently planned, but July 29 is the release date for two platforms, PlayStation 4 and 3DS. For more information regarding the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI, please wait for further news after July 29."

This would imply that the Switch version will be released after July 29, which kind of contradicts Square Enix PR's statement that they can't say whether or not it will be released on the same day as other versions.

Things to note: the user could be making this up (images like these aren't hard to fabricate), and I feel like game company support e-mails are generally never super accurate about matters outside the realm of public knowledge such as this.

Anyways, I sent out an e-mail just now to Square Enix's media relations, so if I get anything back (probably not soon if I do since it's the weekend), I'll let ya'll know.

Has Square at least mentioned which of the three visual styles the Switch version will adopt?

Nope. I want to know as well. I'll be buying both the PS4 and 3DS versions, but if the Switch version has a different visual style, I'll pick that up as well. I won't be buying it if it's the same Unreal Engine 4 version as PlayStation 4, but if it's the 3DS version in HD, I'll get the Switch version instead of the 3DS version.

Huh? It doesn't contradict anything. They said they couldn't say or not whether it would release at the same time. Not being able to say something is not the same as something not happening.

If I say "I can't say whether or not I'm going to play Horizon next" and then I choose to play something other than Horizon, I'm not contradicting myself, nor am I a liar.

At any rate, it's pretty clear it's not releasing at the same time. If it were, it would be announced already.

I mean it's contradictory in that PR says it can't say whether or not it's releasing the same day, but then support straight out says it's not releasing the same day.

But yeah, like you said, it's pretty clear regardless.

If customer services are anything like most companies i deal with, then the left hand rarely knows what the right hand is doing stuff b regards to specific messaging/communication, Even though the rep is most likely right.
