The Sterling Grounds |OT| It's a Slaughter

well there you go

It's funny, I saw the commentary on Jim's Stream/LP thing and it was my first exposure to the game.

Not only did it make me not want to play the game, It made me not want to support the developer in future en-devours. If you have time to complain about people being critical of the first impression of your game, you have time to make your game better.

An invisible indie game that looks like shit releasing alongside a ton of other games, or a indie game hyped up as a so bad it's good purchase. I'd take the second option any day.

Totally. Should have let the commentary ride, instead of acting petulant about it.

I think the ammo is generic and fills whatever gun you happen to be holding. Based on Jim only finding pistol ammo as he held the pistol the whole time and the dev comments, that's the only thing I can think of. Jim NEVER found shotgun ammo but he also never held the empty shotgun again.

What a weird design decision though to have one size fits all ammo that once picked up, it becomes sized only for the gun you're actually holding.

The developer makes a good point though. Fuck you JimfuckingSterlingson for not muting the music. It's even in the options! I mean come on, thats reviewing 101. Always mute the music.
Geez it's like he wanted this amazing game to look bad.

hes the only one insane enough to sit through some of this steam crap with his squirty plays
Jim sure loves low-hanging fruit, gives him plenty of attention every time.

There's a billion games out, why else would you put time into something that makes clear within 5min that's not worth it?

His goal is to push Steam into doing a better job at quality control. This game isn't even Early Access, it's a full release. He highlights shitty developer-gamer interactions as well where devs try to squash bad reviews of their games and act like children and ban gamers who talk bad about the game. It's not just. "Hey pay attention to me, I'm Jim Fucking Sterling", there's more to it than that.

What a disgrace to the indie industry and to Steam which makes it look like a laughingstock.
No wonder the quality of Steam is going downhill with bullshit like this. Greenlight and Early Access needs some serious filter.
Stuff like this is why i don't give a crap about indie games anymore.

Indeed, thank god for Jim, thank god for bringing to light those jackass wannabe indie devs.

My YouTube comment on the original reply video:

Hey Jim, imagine if all the bedroom codies in the Speccy/C64 days had the Internet and YouTube to spew their emotional diarrhea and resultant butthurt over other people's opinions of their GREAT ARTISTIC OPUSES.

I mean, can you imagine Jeff Minter doing one of these videos about a bad review of Attack Of The Mutant Camels? No, I'd think he'd have more self-respect and maturity than to stoop so low.

Which is why we need such paragons of virtue like you, Jim, to keep shaming bad devs in public, whether they're big AAA superstars or indie scam artists like the producer of this garbage. Who knows, maybe they'll learn something from the experience. Keep up the good work, mate.

I can't really think of anything more to say about this whole thing, so I'll just continue to laugh at the game and dev whenever I come across them, and move on.

Easy pickings by Jim... such a low cost for easy page views as you KNEW the game was fucking terrible.

Still though, bless him for doing it.. because this shit is hilarious.. and the dev's response video.. Jim Fucking Sterling SON.

I dunno about that. I don't tend to pay attention to newly released games that I think are going to be shite, so I'm grateful to Jim and those like him who serve the community by confirming whether or not these games are actually shite or not, so I don't end up wasting my sheckels on shite games during a Steam sale or 75% off Daily Deal.

Plus, wannabe indie dev scammers tend to be the most entertaining crybabies in gaming.

I saw the first video yesterday and had no idea that the developer would have a meltdown. I have to give him credit though, it is hilarious. And fuck jimfuckingsterling.

I told my brother about this and his response was, "guy probably didn't know how to code the ammo any other way. Or he's lazy as shit. Either way, bad game design"

I am not sure why, but the thing which bothers me the most about that game is the countdown timer.

First, it goes from "15:10" to "15:9" instead of "15:09", like any proper time display would. Then, when it's at "15:0" (instead of "15:00"), the next tick it goes to... "14:60". Yes, 60 seconds. And no, it is certainly not a leap second.

Oh wow. Wow. Seriously? How do you screw up a countdown timer? It's dead simple not to. All you do is take the total seconds and run it through a function that formats it correctly. You'd have to actually be trying super hard to program it incorrectly like that.

Amazing.

Is it just a byproduct of the lower barrier to entry in terms of developing a game (more games just means more crazy devs as well)?
.

thats exactly why. and i don't have a problem with it.

for the record i don't think steam or valve should be more strict with their guidelines on what games should be on steam or not. the greenlight method is flawed but its way better than just letting valve decide whats worthy or not.

let any game come on and let the consumers decide. democratization of games and whatnot

So, any bets on how long it will be before the video goes down due to copyright claim?

exactly, using random images off google in a game you are profiting off of, is copyright infringement. The blood splatter, the main menu page...

Unless he can prove he has the source image files for those, he is breaking the law.

Very funny ad sad HE is accusing JIM of copyright infringement when he is blatantly doing it and profiting off of it.

You know, I get accused of going for "low hanging fruit" and "easy targets" when I criticize indie games....

... and I get accused of going for "low hanging fruit" and "easy targets" when I criticize big-budget published games.

Y'all need to come to a consensus on what I can criticize. :-)

I'm guessing the crux is that you criticise the low-hanging fruit of many a game. I personally don't know if this is true or not as I haven't seen the vast majority of your work, I was simply aghast at the strange situation of a developer meltdown.

Perhaps I should watch more of your videos though - are your critiques fair? Is there a weighted discussion between good and bad points? Or do they focus mainly on the bad?

The idea behind my YouTube channel in particular is that it's a Russian roulette. I blindly pick the latest interesting looking games on Steam and jump in to see what my first impression is. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. Thanks to Steam's terrible lack of quality assurance lately, it's been more bad than good.

Huh... my post on their Steam forum was removed but they didn't ban me.

Probably because my post was too incriminating for them and they didn't want Valve to ever see it if they actually banned me and I contacted support.

Do feel free to share here. I'm documenting all the fun incrimination for Monday. :)

I just pointed out that their review the reviewer can be considered a slandering campaign against a specific (named) individual and such things are not covered by freedom of expression and can be brought to court.
