USS Enterprise almost in Las Vegas

Vegas: The Final Frontier. While Las Vegas has undergone a number of renovations over the years, spearheaded by the mob or by family-friendly capitalists, there were once plans for a futuristic attraction that would have drawn Trekkies in droves. A 1992 Las Vegas downtown redevelopment competition was nearly won by the Goddard Group’s plan to build a full-scale Star Trek USS Enterprise, complete with restaurant, ride elements, tours and live entertainment, but not, to its detriment, a hotel or casino. Fans of the show or not, tourists would have flocked to the area to, at the very least, have their picture taken with the iconic Starfleet craft. The $150 million project, paltry by today’s Vegas standards, came close, but lost out to the competition’s runner-up, the “Freemont Experience.” Hit the jump for much more, including a tale of how the ego of one studio head grounded the entire Star Trek USS Enterprise project.

I always realize how much of a history buff I am when I think of the Enterprise as the aircraft carrier.

Also, old.

Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
Man, the thought of UFC's being held at the place. Opening up with that cheesey Kirk fight music.

Awesome.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
That would have benen pretty fantastic. Having a small hotel as well would have been icing on the cake. I think the ability to stay, eat and party inside the Enterprise for a few days would be awesome.

Horrible? stop talking bollocks. the fact it's silhouette has lasted 45 years shows what a forward thinking work of art it was. 60's americana at it's fucking finest.

Rounded nacelle's over fat ugly grille wings and tacky blue LED's any day.

Enterprise D please.

And a one year residency for Patrick Stewart. He doesn't have to perform, just greet people in his smooth, seductive, sultry English tone.

Insanely weird, just loaded up the Nerdist Podcast with Morgan Spurlock, and right off the bat, they are talking about this, the Enterprise in Las Vegas. I'm seeing the picture in the OP as Hardwick is describing the Enterprise would be about as tall as the Empire State Building.

Would have been incredible to see this thing in real life.

Would have been cool but w/o being able to "stay" on the ship it wouldn't have lasted.... had it been a casino/hotel I could have seen it lasting long term.

It was fairly dissapointing, Quarks bar was neat at least. When I lived in Vegas, it often was pretty deserted attraction.

I went there once.... the reason it was deserted was the same issue this would have had. There would be no reason to see it more than once.... it had no staying power. A hotel/casino in the mold of a starship would have been different though.... just like the theme casinos (venetian, paris, caesars, etc) this would have been a "future" theme.

you seem to be in the minority here. and its the Refit that is the most recognizable silhouette , not the original. the swirling fat round nacelle's were TERRIBLY tacky and out of place.

Seems like there would be some huge safety issues with the nacelles and primary hull, especially if the primary hull had actual guest areas inside. I can't imagine it could be built like that without some sort of support structures.

That Moon concept—yes. YES. That would be awesome.

The WWF one? LOL. Man how I wish it had been built, especially if it was completed before the WWF->WWE switch.

maybe it would've been easier to build the thing into the ground

it wouldn't be very apparent from street level, but the ship itself would've been supported on 5 sides

They almost built a Superman theme-park that included a Fortress of Solitude and its GIANT YELLOW KEY

Theres some crazy rich guy in the middle east that is building a star trek theme park. Thats what I would do if I had more money than God.

That was my first thought too. I want to say that it would look too garish in any city, but my inner nerd wishes this had happened.

After they decommission the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65), they should take the nuclear reactors out and put it there too.

It is nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall as well. Would be an interesting setting.

I never went to Star Trek: The Experience (obviously what this was chewed up into). How was it?

awesome, but expensive, but they had tons of half off or buy 1 get 1 discounts that made it easier to swallow.

The first time you were "transported" is by far one of my all time theme park / ride experiences ever.

The first ride there was great, in that the shuttle crafts had actual windows to a big curved IMAX screen. Helped with the motion sensation because you were actually moving in relation to the elements on the screen (something Star Tours fixed with their new in-shuttle screen and video programming).

The Voyager/Borg experience was cool too, in that you walked down a creepy hall with borg drones (fully costumed and such) and saw a couple crew members get taken away. That ride itself wasn't as cool because you were just in a big 4D style theatre (aka, 4th dimension being water spray, borg probes in your seat, etc). Still fun though.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
That's too bad it never happened. The Star Trek Experience was okay. I was never there when they had BORG 4D, but I remember the motion ride being very tame in comparison to 'In Search of the Obelisk' at LUXOR and 'Race For Atlantis' at Caesar's Palace Forum Shoppes.

The renovated Downtown area would have been appropriate for this nowadays. They got a lot of non-Casino type of places there such as Insert Coin(s), a video game bar. I was just wandering around there less than a month ago and watching people zip-line through the Fremont Street Experience. They were talking about re-opening Quark's Bar in the Metropolis center. One of the few things left I like about living here is going to the Strip drunk with friends once in a blue moon.
