I wouldn't put any of the Marios in a top 5 NES list anyway, but I sure have no idea what I would put. Hm. Instant choices not in order:

Castlevania 3
Mega Man 2
Zelda 1
Bionic Commando
Final Fantasy

I say those simply because those are probably my most played NES games still today.

edit: really haven't played NES DW3 in a long time, so gonna fix that with something I do actually play still on my NES.

I wasn't much of a NES player but I had the awesomeness recently of playing Darkwing Duck on a friend's and holy crap how is this game not on anyone elses lists? It's some of the best platformering I've ever had.

And it's actually quite hard too.

it's essentially a lightly modified mega man game, really.

When I get home I can elaborate on each of my picks. I can tell you it was not easy narrowing it down so much. Such an awesome system.

Capcom's NES Disney platformers were all pretty much amazing. It just so happens there were a good lot of them with Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers usually topping most people's lists.

Also I forgot to add Shadowgate. I loved that game even though it was ridiculously unfair.

Ah yes, Little Nemo is awesome and hard. But he moves sooo God damned slow :(
Especially noticeable after you've played other platform games.

BLACK BASS FISHING.

I have tons of NES games on my psp. Black Bass and Ducktales are the only ones that see regular play. I don't care that you don't like fishing; the game is awesome. Oh and a nod of the head to Baseball Stars 1. It's still the most fun baseball game ever made in my opinion.

Maniac Mansion is one game I never played for the NES but heard so much good things about it. I remember the game featured in Nintendo Power and I was hyped to play but none of my friends had it I don't think I ever saw it on store shelves so that was that.

What exactly was so great about the game? And do you think it will ever be released the VC?

Slap a 2 behind Megaman and that's probably my list.

Though I might swap out Simon's Quest, Bubble Bobble or Little Nemo for Dragon Warrior.
