German Federal Elections 2017 |OT| Electing the new leader of the free world

I'm not a politician and have no experience around economical politics, but we can agree, throwing around the blame and wanting to punish those, who feel down, doesn't help anybody and just will split our country even more.

I think you assume all afd voters are poor working class. But even if you assume that still doesnt make it right to blame immigrants for their problems.
I do understand why and how exploiting those, makes sense and as far as I can see, that's an old, but reliable strategy of extremist parties.

But it doesn't explain that relatively well off middle class jumped on the band wagon. People who don't have to fear next month's rent payment. People that felt they MIGHT loose some of their way of life or their wealth were persuaded into voting for a party that's full of nazies and holocaust deniers.
For the afd that's the real success and that's why they went as far. Selling Nazi ideology, hate and intolerance to people who 5 years ago would have voted at most FDP and cdu.

I'm kinda rambling here but that's what really makes me mad about all of this and I've seen first hand how that transformation looks like.

Obviously I let of some steam earlier but my tolerance for Nazi propaganda and retoric is balanced at zero and as I stated earlier we as Germans have a special kind of responsibility to counteract the early signs of this kind of movement.

Still embarrassed at the result.

@Dehnus:
My Great Grandmother managed to get fake documents in time and lived as a Christ for the rest of her life. Since her daughter is the mother of my mother, I would be Jewish today if not for the Holocaust.

Let's wait for more hard data. But the South (BW too) was quite open for some AFD positions, sadly.

seems like i have to apologize and retract my statement
AFD is strong in Bavaria and the strongest among all western states this year and a total opposite of 2013

Well, not to be that guy, but "kinda". You would only be "jewish" according to horrible eugenics race law, or due to old testmament mumbo jumbo about who or who is not a jew (which is also an extremely antiquated and terrible way to look at ethnicity or religious adherence if you ask me). IMO, you are jewish if you practice judaism - but that is my post-englightenment way of looking at faith I guess.

But really, back on topic, terrible election results. I am happy Linke got some new votes, but it also so voter migration toward AfD which is rather troublesome. Very troublesome.

So, what's the international take on the election?
Holland pretty much says Merkel biggest as expected, some focus on the AfD getting to be the third party, and how a coalition will be hard to form.

But well, glass houses and all. Since we elected Wilders as our second party. Although the percentages come out about the same as the share AfD has in Germany now.

Just came back from the protest in front of the AfD election party - was pretty big and a great, peaceful, loud crowd. At one point some older guy (with a poodle in his arms, weirdly) came along and started getting in the cops' faces and immediately two other dudes gently touched his shoulders and asked him to leave.

Feels good that this kind of protest just naturally happens without previous organisation because people want to show their fellow (sometimes soon-to-be) citizens they don't have to be afraid. We have to keep this stuff going in the coming months and years.

Also, a little late to the party, but Martin. Schulz. Dude. Couldn't you have said ALL of that just two weeks earlier? Your party would be at 30 instead of 20. Happy to see though that being part of the opposition could lead the SPD to get back to what they once were.

They are only counting votes, not projecting them. Maybe the remaining votes will predominantly come from rural areas which might change the results quite a bit.

They are updating the statistics pretty quickly: https://bundeswahlleiter.de

yeah nvm - i got some huge brainlag...
it's just a "Zwischenergebnis"

mostly the East is still missing

Still noteworthy that the projections might be off by as much as three points. There is still some wiggle room left.
yes, but projections being off by 2% is bad work done by them
their goal is always to be within 1%
so i was a bit shocked.
100% of berlin is still missing for example. that will change quite a lot for Die Linke

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.

because there is no data jet? :D
but yeah Schleswig-Holstein will be low for the AFD
Greens and FPD is strong up there

Because there are no results for Schleswig-Holstein yet?!

Not on that picture particularly. But I've been looking at the Liveticker. And we're well under the average when it comes to the AFD. It's still too much, though.

One of the few positives about SH. Our famers just love the CDU.

I'm not that much of an CDU "fan". But I have to agree.

Jamaica coalition talks will be very interesting. Greens, CSU and FDP have some difficult red lines to square if they don't compromise. OTOH probably the coalition with most potential for substantial progress in a long time if they do.

Why can't Die Linke inspire German workers and students to the same extent as UK Labour, the Sanders movement, Podemos, Le France Insoumie?

Germany has no shortage of a left-wing tradition and Germans seem to suffer from the same kind of economic stagnation and growing alienation as other first world people

Their leadership sucks, they are alienated and the media only knows Merkel and AfD.

because our left-wing tradition is the SPD and moderate and not extremist and Die Linke?

without the east Die Linke would be next to irrelevant and all the time fighting to get over the 5% threshold mark

Could you speak more about the leadership problems?

All I know is that Wagenknecht, despite being of an immigrant Muslim background, has made some overly conciliatory comments toward people who hate refugees.

They still have the stigma of being the successor of the GDR socialist state party SED and all the evil baggage that comes with that. That makes them unelectable for a lot of people in the West. Even if that sentiment fades away they're still seen as the party of and for "the east" by most people in the western part of Germany. They also have some fundamentalist positions when it comes to international politics that makes them hard to vote for on a federal level.
