Watch_Dogs original graphical effects (E3 2012/13) found in game files [PC]

Ah, this is a fine demonstration of which game journalists have enough wit to make basic research before they throw up articles. The result appears to be "very, very few". No wonder games journalism has such a crappy rep.

Also, fuck Ubisoft for their complete lack of effort, and lol @ Digital Foundry.

This is un-freaking-real and I honestly can't wait for their response.

"You see, we had to remove certain features because...well, because the next gen consoles couldn't have parity with the PC."

i dont know if there is some parity thing that some are advocating, but i do know that the gulf between PC and consoles is pretty damn big. Much bigger than the petty squabbling of the two hd consoles

Everything I have seen from this game tells me that Ubisoft aimed for the moon and then they realized how long it would take them to actually get there. They simply ran out of time, so plan B.

Hmmmm, don't like the new DoF in 0.7. While running it's perfect, but if you walk or stop it's almost completely gone.

PC Gamer re-did their headline

"Original graphical effects found in Watch_Dogs and re-enabled by modder" would be more in line with the truth.

There is your proof.

And again, this was almost certainly put in from one of the console devs as a note to anyone else looking at it that they didn't need it, then the code likely made it's way back to PC when other changes from it were incorporated back to PC.

This is not an uncommon thing to have happen with multi-plat titles.

I mean, it could still be some sort of if/then/else stuff like "if a>b then we're on consoles, gotta do ______ to improve performance, otherwise we're on PC, who cares, they have enough power." Still, absolutely not the kinda thing you want to be found when the community is already out for blood.

Still garbage.

Calling it a mod may technically be correct, but makes implications about the code that are false. It also buries the fucking headline behind semantics. 'Mod' has come to generally represent user-created content. This shit is in the game.

Yeah, tweak would be a better word for it, you'd figure PC Gamer of all outlets would know

I really doubt that's reason it was removed. Probably has more to do with last gen.

I said damn.

I did notice my graphics card ran it a little hotter than usual - two degrees, to be precise (68 over the normal 66) - but the game ran so smooth. I'm very interested in what Ubisoft is going to say about all this... once, you know, you cut through the PR bullcrap they'll inevitably spout.

more like it ain't done and we have a shipping date. Taking it out will make broke shit even more broke, so just disable them.

Really wish more studios were like cd project RED that can give out free 2.0 patches with completely rebalances and visual improvements.

Just tried this on my pc, and oh my God does it look amazing. It's always played well on mine, but with a noticeable small bit of stuttering that begins when you start driving. Not with this. Buttery smooth and beautiful with it.
So I decided to try this tonight on my AMD 7870 Annnndddddd.... The DoF is certainly on now, very high and is controlled by walking slow or looking at foreground or background objects.

Headlights are good but shadows looked juxtapose with the others AND the car shadows run at like 5 fps now so kind of stutter behind the car, plus the dithering on Aiden's coat is on or off. Also noted that just with the shadow mod on you get flickering on Aiden more even in the day.

The rain seems to come on based on viewing angle with light a FOV and look like an extra set of particles. Focus is unchanged at all with the same rain effects.

Textures are the same and on high with no extra added POM or even at ultra/PS4 textures.

Performance is no better at all as I thought, at night in the rain it is worse and the driving stutter is still present and unaffected in anyway and this is with high textures and ultra everything else @ 1080, so lots of placebo effect it seems on this.

After looking at it they look like simple effects in the engine that don't play nice/ we're not finished and most certainly DO NOT bring this upto the 2012 reveal, I fact they hardly add anything at all, sorry "DoF level 11" is certainly noticeable though :)

But that's the issue. Not some code comment that's probably fake. The issue is that it appears that they gimped, deliberately since the code still shipped with it able to be turned on, the PC version just so there was parity. Because god forbid everyone realises that the return of the king wasn't all they hoped it would be.

There's a distinct difference between being lazy and not having the team ship the best version of the game on PC that they could, and deliberately gimping the PC version because consoles. I just bought a PS4 yesterday, but I totally recognize that my two year old HD 6950 pumps out a nicer looking Watch Dogs, and the game should have looked far better on PC. That said, I seriously doubt Ubi made this decision merely to make the console versions seem more acceptable.

The effects aren't finished, read above you.

Me neither. It might just describe a feature that is for PC only and not relevant to consoles or something.

Exactly.

It might've been indicative of something and they just forgot to delete it too, losing some context about it.

The way people are attacking these devs, that probably worked hours around the clock to ship the best game they could, is awful. This is the whole "lazy devs" arguments brought to an extreme.

Maybe the devoloper was just sad about the fact that most people on consoles dodnt/can't appreciate PC only futures. ;)

I want to know the exact reason why the stutter went away with this patch for those with 2GB cards

I dont like the explanation of "Magic"

Could you do a before and after video capture? Upload it to youtube, showing you applying it and launching the game...turn on the framerate counter too.

Heck, if I had the game that's what I'd be doing tonight for fun.

This is sound interesting. At least, you have tried to going deeper in the analysis. Read here, it seems they have drop off details just to screw the pc version. Good Lord.

Watch Dogs is the gift that keep on giving. Keep that PR machine spinning, Ubi!

Now that people are installing the """"""""""mod""""""""" and not having performance issues, what is the excuse they are using to justify this?

Bloom is too jacked up and dof is basically nonexistent except when running now. And I thought there were going to be anamorphic flares on the headlights?

While this doesn't paint too good picture of Ubisoft's actions I have to say it's always cool when they still leave those in the code for the community to restore.

PC Gamer applauded Blizzard for it's Diablo 3 DRM, scoffed at fans pissed off about the Sim City launch and are hanging on by the tiniest of threads. They are spinning the toilet bowl, they can't afford to piss off Ubi or any publisher for that matter.

They likely overestimated the new console h/w back in 2012 and when the final specs/devkits were available they downgraded to PS4/XBO levels.
PS4/XB1 were released in 2013.

In 2012, a company like Ubisoft must have known almost every little detail about both consoles, upgrades aside.
