ToQGAF 2014 | Hanamichi! The Next Stop Is Imagination's Stage!

Rewatching gokaiger really lessened my liking to the team :/

New Super Hero Taisen GP scan out. Seems like the Blade Riders are gonna play a somewhat big role this time around (probably about the same length/importance as Faiz's subplot last year). Seems like Blade's been captured by Shocker and Leangle's evil/working with Shocker(?) while Tachibana teams up with Minami Kotaro and Gou to save him? Meanwhile, Yuuto is investigating Kamen Rider Sango, as he isn't supposed to exist. Seems interesting.

Wait wait wait. Yuuto as in the most interesting secondary rider ever Yuuto?

Yep. Zeronos is back.

ToQger 44

Pretty good episode all around. Though I question how Akira was able to use the Hyper Ressha at all (not even with some kind of dramatic focus-episode or anything).

Also, I like how the Ninninger promo at the end references the fact that the team is the third-generation of Ninjas within the show itself and Sentai-wise.

Anyone here interested in making the TokuGAF 2015 OT?

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
It says something that we're using Kyoryuger to represent the next thread. ToQger was just that lame. I mean it had moments, but most of it was bad comedy, fairly bland action, and twists they didn't even try to hide.
Still better than Gaoranger.

It's a shame that it felt like Kobayashi phoned in a lot of the scripts in for this show. Even if it was lame, ToQger felt like it had some nice concepts going on (original trains motif for Sentai, kids as heroes, a sixth who used to be a villain, imagination as a power source, some sweet villain designs, and a face villain who somewhat desires to be good).

However, execution is everything, and everything just fell flat on its face.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I guess I'm Torin, the only interesting character in Kyoryu... who is still nothing compared to Doggie.

Oh well, I'm satisfied he appeared in two Sentai shows.

But I don't even post often here!

Preview clip of Zyuranger DVD

Not much to go off of.
I know some people are upset they translate it as "Dinosaur Squadron Zyuranger". Probably the TV-Nihon audience...

wait why would they be pissed, that's the proper translation that even wikipedia uses

then again lolTVN fans.

Whoa, ToQ 44. This series got a lot better on the last ~10 or so episodes. Wish they revealed the
they are children
thing earlier, so we could get even more development.

I'm also reaching episode 40 with the Ninjas, I'll probably finish them in time for Ninninger, yay!

It's interesting how the ninja series are structured differently. I like how Kakuranger was divided into acts, and how it took a lot of time for the extra hero to appear. The scrolls episodes were strange, but pretty cool. Jiraiya's focus episodes on that arc were the best.

The two groups dynamic on Hurricangers is also pretty great. I think I'm liking the Goraigers more than the "main team". Shurikenger is awesome, too. This is not as weird as Abaranger, but still has quite a few similarities that make me more interested in early 2000's sentais.

Huh. Just saw the update about Super Hero Taisen GP in tokusatsu network. It seems like the movie starts with a remake of the final battle of the original Rider series, with Rider 1 and 2 vs the Great Leader, but updated with modern effects. That's rather neat.

I know some people are upset they translate it as "Dinosaur Squadron Zyuranger". Probably the TV-Nihon audience...

The translation isn't wrong, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's... heavily simplified. When Barza is calling upon the Guardian Beasts, the translation makes them "guardian dinosaurs", which isn't correct. Geki and Dan DO have dinosaurs as their guardians, but Goushi, Mei and Boi do not. And... for some reason I don't particularly like the way they handle dialogue. For a literal translation of his opening speech here, it would be

"O great Guardian Beasts, the time has finally come to awaken the five holy warriors from their slumber!"

Shout's translation is correct, but it just lacks the punch it should have. The next line however... the translator didn't bother with the phrase "seigi no yaiba", and just put "Justice will prevail over evil", which while it keeps the meaning, it isn't what is being said.

"The blade of justice shall smite evil and defend the peace on Earth!"

As you can see, it doesn't take away from the MEANING of what Barza is saying, but his actual dialogue is far more dramatic than the translation lets on.

And when he starts awakening the Zyurangers, the dialogue gets further abridged. The only one that really jumped out at me was when he awakens Boi, as he says in the SF translation "Wake up already!", when the line is more along the lines of "How long are you planning to sleep for?!"

Like I said, it's not bad, at all. But it just lacks... something.

Guess I've taken a short Toku break since gettin through Faiz. I think I'm about caught up on Drive. I finished the ep where Mach finished out his 2 part intro episodes.

I started on Kuuga last year on mobile but the app was taken down and I couldn't get it to stream elsewhere so I may go and finish it.
So its that time again Tokugaf...
Time to tell Shaowebb what to watch next!

Currently I need to see:

Kuuga
Agito
Ryuki
Hibiki
Kiva

Sell me on em GAF. Watcha think is worth my time first?

Also:

Unfinished shows so far:
Kuuga (maybe 3 eps in)
Lion Maru G (possibly 4 eps in)
Akiba Ranger (5-sih eps in)
Kyoryuger (stopped several in...couldn't take it. Brave
out.)

Curious about:
Gobusters
Gokaiger
Sentai in general
Garou
Bima

I can definitely vouch for Kuuga being a show you need to watch. Though the show can be a little slow-paced at times, the characters are pretty memorable and the Kuuga powers within the show itself are treated with importance and not something like a toy commercial.

Kyoryuger on the other hand is probably the best Sentai show in recent memory. Though it may be a bit too over-the-top for some, it has very likeable characters, tight action sequences, and strong plot arcs that are introduced and resolved throughout. Even the filler episodes manage to be memorable in a number of ways. Kyoryuger always manages to be constantly engaging on an episode-to-episode basis, and that's not something I can really say of much recent Sentai shows *coughToQgercough*.

Guys, could each of you guys make a list of recommended shows to put on the OP for the next TokuGAF thread? I plan on having as many of you guys being quoted on the OP with a list of shows you think newcomers should watch.

Honestly, none of those Rider shows captivated me.

However, Akibaranger and Kyoryuger are must-sees. You may like Go-Busters by the time you finish it, but I admit it is a really bland show with poor characters until around half-way through the teens. Obviously, Gokaiger is an all-time great, and another very recent Sentai show that's fantastic is Gekiranger.

Kyoryuger is bitchin'.

You can quote me on that

I see a lot of vouching for Kyoryuger. Whats the deal though? When I tuned in it was really really cartoonish...like nicktoons heroism. Blue bein all strong and destroying that statue he was supposed to save, the over the top happy smile of the main red's bravery...just...did it ever get deeper? They all seemed like caricatures...did it come together like Den O did or something?

-Kamen Rider Kuuga
-Kamen Rider Double
-Kamen Rider Fourze
-Kamen Rider Gaim

-Jetman
-Kakuranger
-Kyoryuger
-Akibaranger

I guess I'll think of some good descriptions later.

Newbie Recommendations:

For Super Sentai: Boukenger. It's very indicative of the franchise over all. It's very basic and episodic with very, very few overarching plots, but that's part of it's charm and it kind of is reminiscent of older Sentai in this way.

For Kamen Rider: Kuuga. It's a slow-paced show and some people find it hard to really get into, but the underlying police drama of it really sold me on the show and it really does feel like a buddy-cop movie at times. I don't know. Kamen Rider for newbies is a bit harder to recommend because the franchise tends to wildly differ from year to year, especially in the early days of the Heisei revival.

Other Fun Stuff: The Takara Tomy trinity of Ryukendo, Rescue Force and Rescue Fire. Ryukendo feels like Tomy's answer to Toei's Kamen Rider, but it's a boat-load of fun and the characters are just a blast. The Rescue series are Tomy's answer to Toei's Sentai, but due to it's focus on rescues (extreme or otherwise), it's usually very good at keeping your interest.

I don't have enough experience/familiarity with Ultraman to give a good recommendation, sadly.

Bouken and kuuga? Don't listen to that man! Both of those series are boring, although boken has interesting parts.

For sentai go with deka and for rider go with kabuto

I strongly suggest pushing the following:

Kamen Rider OOO's- It builds a very strong core cast. Everyone matters and everyone is likeable. It has a very nice build up of the hero's powers and him growing into them as they are constantly depicting how hard it is to handle using combos for him. Also it adds the nice mix of both drama, comedy and action that is prevalent across the entire Kamen Rider franchise.

Kamen Rider Gaim-living proof that no matter the theme if the show puts together a real plot with real risk/reward issues then it can carry itself. This is one of the best Rider shows hands down. Lots of powers, good cast, and tons of crazy plot twists. Things get dark and things stay heated. A great show.

Kamen Rider Den O- by God it was popular for a reason. It is the comedic landmark in all the shows and to date it still holds audiences with Momotaros. The cast is fun, heartwarming, and there is actually some real drama here. A must see if you want to relax and just enjoy fun stuff.

Kamen Rider W- detective mystery with a great show encompassing sub plot that eventually takes over and takes off. This is one of the best there ever was, or will be...except for Chief. She's a fucking turd.

Kuuga is a type of show we will probably never see again: at its core it is a J-drama with your main character being able to transform into a Hero. Its visual effects will feel outdated, but it's also a show that doesn't rely on much CGI anyway. It's a very reality-grounded show, with much less toys to sell. Its relatively low budget forces it to focus on storytelling instead of style--all for the better. Hibiki is a similar show to Kuuga, but I'd recommend Kuuga over Hibiki because the latter was retooled in the middle of the season, making Kuuga the "complete" one.

So yeah that's a +1 for Kuuga. I'll write for other Rider shows and Sentai when I'm done with houseworks later today.

Akiko got better as time passed =/

Listen to this man though. Especially with den o. It starts off a little slow but gradually amasses a lovable cast and the best secondary rider to date.

If you can't stand the atmosphere, I guess then it never improved, but what Kyoryuger has over other recent Sentai is a sense of things always going forward. In spite of having an episodic structure, there's a large number of extra ranger and subplots in the villain side which pretty much continuously flow, with many large arcs spread through the series.

Personally, I don't think the characters themselves were particularly great, and the ending was disappointing, but its sense of movement and action really kept me entertained throughout.
