Pitchford: Fans wrong to sue Gearbox over Aliens: Colonial Marines

Pitchford - keep talking bullshit and sooner or later you'll buy into it yourself.

The game was a clusterfuck. Now owning up to that is shameful and will haunt his company's reputation for years to come.

Shut the fuck up randy you are a liar!

Alien is the franchise most i love.I followed the development of the game when they announced and looking in the official forums every day until the release....so don't talk randy you are a liar for the rest of my life.

Sorry to talk like this but if you are a mega fan of the franchise and waited for years to play colonial marines maybe you understand how i feel when i see randy in a interview talking like nothing happened.

Randy is the only person in the game industry i hate for like they did to colonial marines.

Pitchford also expressed that he believes that the market should judge a product, not the legal system.

Cos then you can blame people other than owning to your damn mistakes, right Randy? Arsehole.

Just don't buy a Gearbox game again. Him apologising won't make a difference.

And realise that if you pre-order something, you are agreeing to give away your money with little idea as to the quality of what you're going to receive for it. If you pay beforehand and get mugged off with a shit game, who's to blame for spending the cash in advance?

Take responsibility!
And then shite like Colonial Marines can never ever happen again.

Wow Randy still not stepping up and apologizing for this bullshit game. Still not buying any Gearbox products. Deceiving not only the public but journalists too how had to cover basically nothing and got sent to a press trip at Gearbox and sat in the lunchroom for hours cause they had jack shit to show. And Pitchford just stayed in his office the entire time.

Screw you Pitchford.

Wow, didn't know this :/

At first I thought Pitchford was doing the usual CEO thing of just pretending their shit games are good to try and sell them, but considering he keeps bringing it up long after the dust has settled I really have to wonder if he genuinely thinks Colonial Marines wasn't terrible.

Pitchford is one of the biggest snake oil salesmen in video games.

He's still defending that pile of crap?

I don't even think he is defending the game, it sounds like he is saying "I can make a piece of crap and do wrong, but I am above the law."
He thinks its up to the public to deal out punishment by not buying the game and it ends there.

Fuck you Pitchford!

Looking forward to watching Battleborn crash and burn, looks boring as hell compared to everything else out this year. Basically Evolve 2.0 (from 2K again!), I can tell it should be F2P already.

He could also be suggesting that the public went out in droves to buy the game and it actually sold well (I think it did?) which is sad. He's actually saying "Yeh so what we made a terrible game, you all went out and bought that piece of shit, thanks for the money!"

This has been a couple of great months when it comes to publishers telling us how much of a piece of shit we are.

I didn't pay for Colonial Marines, I was given it as a gift, but...

he believes that the market should judge a product

As an impartial, open-minded fan of the source material, ready to have a good time, I did judge the product.

It was shit.

Guys I had a search and I might be doing it wrong but what was wrong with gearbox and the game?
This, apart from hearing the game was shit, what did they do so horribly bad above and beyond the usual shit tier release?

I believe it's also been suggested or suspected that they siphon funds from this project in order to fund Borderlands 2.

I'd love to do the searching for you but can't be bothered. He basically showed off tons of early work in progress footage at E3 one year (the game ended up looking much worse than the demo), claiming it was a passion project for him and that he's the biggest Aliens fanboy blah blah blah. Then the game vanishes for a while and suddenly releases with most of the credit going to a Gearbox assistant studio (I've forgotten the name now). There were also claims made that Gearbox invested the money from Sega into Borderlands 2 rather than Aliens, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true based on the game.

I think Pitchford is the Uwe Boll of the games industry in that he really thinks he's not in the wrong and that he made a great product.
The reason I still haven't bought Borderlands 2 or the Pre-sequel is because of Pitchford.
I might get it at some point but everytime I get interesed in buying it he opens his mouth and I just go lol NOPE.

It's his fault he made a shitty licensed game.

Of course it is. The game was fucking awful.
But other people cannot blame ol' Randy for making them put their hands into their wallets and agreeing to pay full whack for it before they knew what they were getting.

Publishers can release shitty and broken games all day long (and do). The responsibility though is on the customer to be careful with their money and not pre-order it because the marketing said it was the best thing ever.

Unfortunately when they announce Borderlands 3, the majority will completely forget about this and Gearbox will have the last laugh.
Borderlands 3 flopping on principal would be the best way to send a message to this guy but it probably won't happen.

Oh hey notoriously shitty CEO Randy Pitchford is still shitty? Gosh that shocks me
/s

Of course I'll be able to fly with the power of my mind alone before he'll get around to admitting they dumped on their fans with their own unmitigated bullshit and collusion with Sega on deceptive marketing .

Oh FFS

They LIED to get preorders. They passed off a game that didn't exist as a product which was due to release 8 months later. Companies that lie to customers to make money from them deserve to be sued. It amazes me that people give Watch_dogs abuse for downgrading in a world where this piece of shit exists.

Gearbox could release Knights of the Old Republic 3 where every NPC was a naked Mila Kunis and I still wouldn't buy it. Seriously they can fuck off.

I wouldn't want Borderlands 3 to flop in the slightest if it was well made, works as it should, and is of a high quality.

It's just nobody should agree to pay for the thing until it can be assured that all of the above criteria have been filled. Fortunately, especially with Steam refunds, it's getting easier and easier to sort things out if they don't function up to par.

Don't get me wrong, I pre-order some games. I've got MGSV waiting. But if I get bent over and fucked if the game comes out as a non-functioning turd, that's not on Hideo Kojima, that's not on Konami, that's on me for agreeing to buy the thing before its even out.

Edit : what I'm trying to say is that to agree to pre-order is to agree not to complain if you end up getting shat on, or waste time and money with frivolous lawsuits. That's all.

After reading the OP I was going to say the same thing as the first reply/Jim Sterling said. Pitchford should just say "I apologise if some fans feel they were mislead - that was never our intention. At the time our ambitions just outstretched our resources, and the final product wasn't of the quality we had hoped. I apologise if any fans feel deceived."

That's all he needs to say - just a broad apology, even if he doesn't really mean it, and just let bygones be bygones. Stop insulting your audience because their expectations were balanced against your misleading marketing.

Eh, I love Borderlands, I still want BL3 to be great and I'm looking forward to playing it. You kinda have to divorce what you like from the people behind it sometimes (assuming the offense isnt great enough to trigger you into action), else you end up missing out.

I dislike pre-order culture as much as anyone on GAF but it's not to blame here. Boxing off player skins/perks etc is a far cry from advertising 5 or so minutes of a game that doesn't exist.

I'm surprised people still give Gearbox money, they actually used Sega's money for Borderlands 2.

And Borderlands 1. Colonial Marines was announced in 2006.

He's definitely wrong to not have at least apologized in some form by now.

He's definitely NOT wrong in saying that the lawsuit was a giant waste of time. I really think the court system should be reserved for serious grievances only - things that affect people's lives in a meaningful way. This was, after all, just a shitty game and nothing more. No one lost their home by buying it, no one got sick and died from it, etc. At worst you lost 60 bucks. Definitely not worth the hassle in court.

In the end though, Pitchford really should just keep his mouth shut. No good seems to ever come from his words.

"As long as no one is SERIOUSLY hurt, corporations can mislead us and essentially swindle us out of our money! It's ok!"

Well we pre-order all sorts of goods in 'real life' before receiving them why should s/w makers get off scott free? After all if you buy a home in a new development you are pre-ordering a home, or if you order a new model car straight from the factory, in both cases you are buying on the basis of promises and past experience with the producer or their reputation.

Pre-order was only a winning game for Gearbos et al before refunds became a standard for digital goods, now the playing field is levelled I can put my money down based on faith and if the product as delivered is crap I get my money back.

That said if Randy Pitchford promised me a solid gold bar for $5, I still wouldn't pre-order and I'd have an assaying kit in my pocket for the moment he handed it over.

Yep, this. They accepted money from Sega intended for developing Aliens: Colonial Marines and instead used it to make their own game, Borderlands 2, all while telling Sega "oh, yeah, we're working on it, sorry it's taking a while, check out this vertical slice that's totally representative of the gameplay!"

I used to love Gearbox and their Brothers In Arms IP, and when I heard they were doing a licenced Aliens game I was all over it. I attended their forums for years and got extremely hyped. When I finally saw the reviews and heard people's impressions I ended up not buying the game. I'm still extremely salty.

Shouldn't ubisoft be sued for their photoshop "screenshots" then? The ones they use even on the 360 marketplace?

You coulda filled a silo with your saltiness if you had actually played it.

Not to excuse ubisoft but there is a massive difference between touching up a screenshot and fabricating 5 minutes of 'gameplay' that you show off 8 months before release.

I agree with Jim.

I agree. All it takes is him manning the fuck up and going ok we screwed up. We lied and we're sorry. It really is all it takes.

The sad thing is though that under all the bugs and awfulness it actually had a ton of potential. The story while not the greatest was kind of interesting. The gameplay itself wasn't the most awful. It's just that everything else was shit.

I definitely understand the point you're making, and it's a fair one.

I would say though that for both cases - you don't "have" to buy houses that are in development and you don't "have" to buy a new model of car straight from the showroom. You can wait for a while and test the car at a dealership. You can go to any complete house for sale and view inside it and take a look around.

You can wait for the game to come out and read the reviews and what others are saying about it. You are taking the risk that you may not like something, or it may be shite, when you buy something new.

Luckily as you said, now that it's getting easier to claim refunds, the process getting a little easier and a little more secure.

I've been playing Gearbox games since Opposing Force, I rented A:CM but bought it when it was on offer for a few quid to show my buddy who had never played it and didn't believe it could be so bad.

I was always under the impression that Randy was a good guy, Gearbox will never get any of my money again. The most frustrating thing is the game is/was a complete fucking mess and he still will not admit it.
