But did GB even call out MGS5 on all the bugs??

it just proves that GB is just a front.

Seriously this community will never be taken seriously when you have personalities in said community attacking a guy for giving a game a lower score than they agree with.

Amazing.

I don't follow gaming media as much as I used to, mainly because reviews and coverage are bought and sold, so there's no credibility, but yeah... Jeff Gerstmann is the wrong guy to attack on this one. Especially from a flimsy, pimped-out position like Rooster Teeth is in. He's got credibility from the Kane & Lynch thing, and he's usually a tough reviewer. I remember he rated Super Mario Sunshine a deserved 8/10 back in the day, and Nintendo fans were rioting in the streets, lol.

Wow, Jeff doesn't review games like he's 13 years old, thinking every hot new release is the greatest game of all time. What an elitist asshole.

A. I love Giant Bomb
B. I hate Giant Bomb's reviews
C. I love Fallout 4
D. I support Jeff's thorough destruction of Rooster Teeth

Maybe I'm just more about integrity than I even thought.

You can't be serious. "Speak from the heart"? I know practically nothing about RT, but how could you not tell what's going on by just watching that video? It's blatantly obvious.

To be fair, the rest of the guys at Rooster Teeth are pretty sound. Unfortunately this podcast The Patch is pretty fucking garbage. Hard to judge them all based on this one podcast.

People have always had irrational reactions to review scores. I remember being in GAF way back when EGM print was still a thing and reviews scores would be posted and like clockwork people here would go ape shit that games that, in most instances, they haven't even played yet were being scored too low. That kind of reaction is always funny to me because people that react that way clearly already have their mind made up, in which case, why the fuck are you even reading reviews?

This reminds me a lot of that time when GT acted like children for games some people might not want and everyone called gb cynical for brushing it off

Off subject but why does it seem like every nerd underwear model has blue or red hair?

Probably because it's one of the few professions that let people alter their appearance. Seems women in particular get have to adhere to strict guidelines on appearance in the workplace. Tattoos, piercings, hairstyles and colors, shoes. So I don't blame anyone for taking control of their appearance when they can.

wow internet, saw this brought up on gb reddit awhile ago and never heard of "the patch" podcast so i actually listened to it for the first time and thought what they said was fine. this is coming from someone who is a big gb fan and listens to the bombcast/beastcast and even went to pax prime for their panel.

people really love drama or something cause this barely rates as anything. so meg said something along the lines that people give low reviews to get attention which is true. seemed like it was a general statement and not specifically singling out jeff. Not sure who it was but some other guy even said afterwards something along the lines that reviews which are critical are still useful for people who are looking for that kind of review.

Here is the very sad thing. Many reviewers have no clue what someone else is going to rate something. They just don't have the time or desire to find out by seeking someone out prior to the embargo and many times after an embargo move to another game.

It is so odd to pretend that many of these guys have esp and know what exact score something else will rate a title at. And even if they just assume a game will get high ratings, for years we have seen that isn't always the case.

In the majority of cases this comes across as people uneducated in differing opinions that fall back on 3rd grader arguments because they can't foot a proper and well thought out response. That is of course, if a response or comment is even needed.

I'm honestly curious if review scores play a part in people buying games. Don't the masses usually get buying advice from friends. Who are the specific people who are on the fence about a game and need a review score to tell them whether or not to buy a game? I'm not berating them but I'm literally very curious about who do these reviews actually help?

It always feels like reviews are from a time that has passed. And that the only people who actually care about them are the those who are highly into games and who end up buying those games regardless of scores.

Yeah, I agree. Even Ryan is sound for the most part and I was surprised he'd actually say something about Jeff's review. Gus has always been awful though IMO.

This is like some sort of unintentional satire.

The last I heard of Rooster Teeth before this was when Jeff was on their Youtube Gaming stream during E3. The times, the times have changed, or whatever.
Oh well, I guess this is helpful in that if I ever stumble upon anything Rooster Teeth again, I'll know they're more interested in acting as a marketing arm for publishers, than doing or encouraging proper games criticism.
I'm not familiar with the specific review in question and I have no idea if the Rooster Teeth comments were off base in this circumstance, but I'm glad to read that someone is publicly taking Gerstmann to task in some form. The guy is a stick-in-the-mud blight on games media that's treated like a messiah for giving one shit game a mediocre review a decade ago. He has zero enthusiasm and only cynicism for gaming -- and it shows in both his writing as well as his podcast. He should just switch over to writing about wrestling or something that he actually enjoys.
He doesn't enjoy wrestling.

Never heard of these people. Fallout 4 is my GOTY, but I can't find much fault with Jeff's review. The game has a ton of technical issues, especially on consoles and that' can have a pretty big impact on some peoples experience with the game. It wasn't a huge deal for me, but I understand why he would score it the way he did.

So, I definitely think that's a really stupid thing for RT to accuse Jeff of, but I do think it's fair to criticize the split PC, console scores.

I mean, 20% off a score because the game's framerate occasionally dips a bit seems goofy to me. Especially considering 1) it will likely be improved through patches, and 2) they haven't done the same for a lot of other games with similar issues.

While I do think this whole thing is pretty ridiculous, saying they weren't necessarily talking about Jeff is pretty dumb when the lady literally mocks Jeff's use of Mixlr. How does she even know he's always on Mixlr? That's like something only big GB fans tune in to.

His 3/5 - 4/5 split seems entirely accurate to me.

Never heard of them, but now I know how Meg Turney looks in her undergarments.

Yeah I googled her and saw a bunch of tits and ass, then I went to her twitter and got some more tits and ass.

Every single Fallout 4 thread since release summed up perfectly in two adjacent posts.

You can't review a game based on the promise of what might happen in the future.

What a bunch of jackholes. I lost what relatively little respect I still had for them. The game is indeed a technical mess. I've never in my life played such a glitchy, buggy game. You know you've got a mess on your hands when you're not sure if you can't progress in a quest because you're missing something or if the game itself is just bugging out.

Especially because Bethesda's track record, especially last gen, proves that they may release a game that never actually get's to a point a fair few people would consider "playable".

I actually feel dirty after watching that. Maybe they should just stick to shorts and stuff and not legitimate criticism? Also, the talk on reviews this past week on the Bombcast was pretty enlightening on how and why games get some of the scores they do get.

Probably worth mentioning the founder of RT seems to have a lot of respect for Gerstmann, and they've been on each other's panels. This looks like an uninformed cosplayer said something dumb, and the other guys went with it.

Even the RT community savaged them over it. Here's Ryan's response in their subreddit where he doubles-down (check the downvotes)

I love how he talks up context, when the context was bashing on Jeff and his review. I wonder if they even ever saw that he rated the game higher on PC because it just ran better?

It's more than just "occasionally" "a bit".

On my PC, with the settings turned below what the game recommends, I run at mostly 50-60FPS. When I get near a decent sized area like around the Cambridge PD, it drops to around 35-45. Normally I'd just put this down to "Bethesda Open World(tm)" and be fine with it, but if I go anywhere near Goodneighbor it drops to 18FPS. 18 FPS. That's almost too slow to be considered motion.

The fact that it runs worse on my PC than it does on the underpowered console hardware suggests something is really wrong this time around.

While I do adore Bethesda's work and the game, I'm fully behind Jeff's decision to base a large chunk of the score on its performance, because, after all, what good is a game if it's literally hard to play?

Guess the PC version should get 6/5 because of how amazing it'll get with mods in a few years.

Forgot that people still read video game reviews and respect their authors. lol

"I have no outstanding experience with games, no keen eye for their technical aspects, and I'm not even good at any of them. I haven't even explored much in terms of variety of titles. Guess I'll be a video game reviewer."

Like I'm gonna care about what skinny-fat bearded white guy in hipster glasses #27 thinks about a video game. Video game reviews are a waste of time and space. Twitch has effectively replaced them as far as I'm concerned. Good on them for continuing to make money on idiots, though. The industry is a joke, lmao.
