A bit...worrying... :\

Everyone panic!

I believe Nintendo long ago debunked what you're describing, i.e. a hybrid.

I mean, who knows at this point. Their silence is deafening amongst news of WiiU distrubution ceasing, sony doing iterative consoles, VR coming to actual fruition....

All we know about the NX is that it plays games. That's....weird.

If the NX doesn't drop this year, nintendo is done. Total irrelevancy.

Wut. They'll be "relevant*" (hate that term) as long as the product is good, well marketed and receives decent software support. Whether that's next month or next year I don't think it matters.

*Edit: to note, I don't mean they will be competing with Sony etc, I just mean 'not irrelevant'.

"Good games sell" is a myth that is routinely disproven with alarming frequency. Nintendo fans should know that more than anyone.

It would be nice if that's the way it worked.

But it's not, and it's likely that it never will be again.

How is that relating to what I said?

If you're referring to my comment on "good software support", I'm talking about volume as much as quality. 3rd parties being on board is basically rule number one.

Even so, I was replying to a post about Nintendo being "irrelevant" if NX doesn't launch this year, and thus being doomed. Do you genuinely think launching this year is more important than good software support?

It would be nice if that's the way it worked.

But it's not, and it's likely that it never will be again.

To be clear, I'm referring to relevancy as implied by the post I was replying to. ie/ not falling into oblivion/not being irrelevant. I don't expect Nintendo to be duking it out with Sony & MS any time soon.

They're relevant to gaming through their games regardless of the hardware product. First party output is still highly regarded by many and that's why people who dislike the WiiU and its "gimmicks" so much are so thirsty for (PSBO)NX infos.

As long as there are people willing to pay for these games, they'll stay "relevant" (to an extent of course) as a first party, regardless of them alienating a portion of conservative "core" gamers. I'm not even sure core gamers are the leading money bringers anymore...

Regardless I hope relevancy isn't measured by market appeal because that would paint a very, vary bad picture of most mediums.

Unfortunately unless Nintendo can find a way to evolve some of it's major franchises or establish new ones that catch the attention of more core gamers, it's hard to see them staying truly relevant in the industry unless the nostalgia fueled non-gaming products count. That or catch lightning in a bottle, but I'm very skeptical that will happen again.

This is like a demo of what a mario costume would look like in random UE4 3rd party games lol.

Agree with this, thats one of the reasons why i don' want 3rd party devs work on nintendo games. But you can imagine what nintendo can create with a system that handle that much power.

Even though you put who those people are...I still don't know who they are. But if its on twitter it must be real.

Because right now I don't have a lot of faith that Nintendo will deliver a console that will compete with Xbox One or PS4.

Nor do I think they will produce a handheld that will compete with the mobile phone.

A bit...worrying... :

Not surprising. After Wii U, they'll have to prove they know what they're doing, and I'm not sure they're quite desperate enough at this point.

I guess when they say "take chances" its about whatever "gimmick" nintendo has planned for the NX.
I don't know the exact context they are saying this though. That they just don't like what the proposed "gimmick" is or if the console as a whole just isn't impressive?

I mean, the job titles are comic illustrators and fanartist.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if they happen to know someone who knows something considering new "insiders" with supposed sources seem to pop up every couple weeks nowadays.

I find your take a bit odd considering most people here are incredibly cynical as to what the NX will be from a hardware and commercial standpoint in the first place.

Hard to be positive when you announce the death of a console BEFORE revealing the new one.
I'm still believing though, without hope there is only despair.

That is exactly what Nintendo should be doing, though. They should be putting in all effort to make sure that the next system is a success, because even if it isn't, they are going to be locked in for the next couple years.

It doesn't even matter what job he has. He is a known entity. He is someone who states an opinion without hiding behind anonymity of the internet. And his opinion is dismissed based on that very fact. "He's a comic illustrator, pff!" or "Blabla, Sonic salty" or "You got all that from someone that draws Sonic comics?". He's practically trashed because he dared to expressed an opinion without hiding under the safety of being an anonymous insider for example. That's my whole point here.

A fan artist isn't really an insider, and though it does sound like he may have heard something about the dev kit, who knows what he heard and from who, and if even that was reliable, or if what he heard relates to the home console or portable. I imagine whoever may have told him something didn't say anything with much detail, because NDA. And like he says, dev kit may have already charged or could change.

He might just be referring to Tamaki said or some bs like that. Who knows.

A lot of the insiders around here are of the type "I have some friends in the industry" or "I heard from someone in the industry".

I don't think the image in the OP is legit but the concept is something Nintendo has patented. I just don't see what's exciting about a screen controller when that's what the gamepad already is. Even if there is new interactivity, it feels counter to VR, big screens, and immersion to be looking down at a controller to play a game, assuming this is for a console.

Right, and I don't know that anything they are saying is accurate either. Could just be good guesses that happen to pan out.

Seems most of the insiders on here don't exactly have a spotless record of always knowing what's up.

I'm not hearing a lot of rumours/leaks that the NX is going to be a stellar machine. Are you?

We haven't heard anything about it NOT being a good console.
Of course it could always be a terrible console but there has been no news on any front at all to come to any conclusion other than "3-4 devs who have come forward don't have dev kits or know anything at all about the NX".

I wouldn't call being doubted as being "trashed."

People will believe them as soon as they have some kind of track record or verification behind their info. Anonymous sources get trashed too when they don't have any substance to back themselves up. I do agree that people in general are more likely to doubt when the rumor is negative (or when making specific claims). For instance, a lot of people kind of just assumed Rosti's credibility when he said vague and easily believable things like "NDAs are really tight" etc. But when he came into this thread and seemingly confirmed this rumor people started to try and pick him apart until he clarified.

I think mobile doesn't compete with handheld, because mobile games doesn't have physical buttons + the most game feels like flash games.

Nintendo will not be stuppid enough to bring a new console that still can't compete with ps4.
They know 3rd party devs will ignore the system again.

It's early to tell, but if one gimmick will fail, it will be the psvr because of many reasons.

Even when looking at apple with their products, it looks like they are struggling to bring new ideas to the market.

MS focus at the moment is PC & Hololens.

It's a good time for nintendo "to fight back" and bring something the core gamers want.

I'm not hearing a lot of rumours/leaks that the NX is going to be a stellar machine. Are you?

I'm not hearing any credible NX leaks/rumors beyond the one from Trev about it launching with Zelda. Oh, and there was that first one about "industry leading chips" but I guess that doesn't count.

Only reason Trev counts is because his source delivered in spades with the 3DS and Wii U software leaks. Everyone else is literally a friend of a friend on twitter or 4chan, with no history and no credentials. Why would I latch on to such flimsy rumors from people not in a position to know anything about a platform we know next to nothing about? It could be anything, and whatever it is could change, because they haven't announced it and aren't locked in to public perception.

Someone could tweet right now that NX is powered by ground up babies and I'm sure there would be a rush of responses from you and several others. "I'm not surprised. Nintendo always did hate babies." Because, I mean, no one's farted out a rumor that NX isn't powered by ground up babies, have they?

My expectations are low. I hope that it is at least moderately more powerful than the WiiU and pretty cheap. Unfortunately they we'll probably end up with another console that's over expensive due to whatever the new gimmick is.

The question is, what consoles do you own of current gens?
What do you want to pay for a NX console?
