Shane Black: RDJ wants Mel Gibson to direct Iron Man 4

Marvel might as well.
RDJ looked mega invested in Civil War with the material he was given, and given the overarching story it's the best time for another Iron Man film. And given where Stark's head is at, is there anyone better than Gibson/RDJ (who both hit rock bottom) to tell the story of a guy who's hit rock bottom?
Or, to put it another way, RDJ got Marvel to sign off on Shane Black as co-writer/director of Iron Man 3. I think it's fair to say if he exerted his power, he'd be able to get Gibson an interview at least.
And as for 'Hollywood protects their own', Gibson isn't even in the top ten list of fuck-ups in Hollywood. Stuff like Zack G refusing to work with Gibson in The Hangover but working with a convicted rapist in Mike Tyson points out the fabulous hypocrisy of Hollywood.

I always liked when stars still can be great friends to eachother despite the fame and those three are obviously very tight. Gibson helped RDJ to get out of the gutter, so no wonder RDJ wants to return the favor.
Marvel movie seems like below Mel's talents, but it would bring him into mainstream again, making it easier to secure bigger deals. Altough from what I've heard this might already be happening after how well Hacksaw Ridge was recieved at Cannes.

I would agree with this before Ryan Coogler signed on to direct Black Panther. No telling how good he can be if he continues to get opportunities

Would be interesting to see what the free market's decision would be on a Mel Gibson directed Iron Man 4. I doubt Disney wants to take that gamble.

There's so many inconsistencies, hypocrisy, convenient lines in the sand. Known rapists get work. Known hard core drug users get work. Ex convicts get work. Well this would be a great test to see how much bargaining clout RDJ really has. I really can't see Gibson directing unless Downey makes some major salary concessions, if it could even possibly happen at all.
Personally I was under the impression Gibson had been a shit for years, but couldn't be touched because he was a top of the top A-lister. It wasn't until the public tirades that he could be blacklisted without anyone making a fuss.

If they ask RDJ to make Iron Man 4, and he says 'only if Mel directs it', then Mel's getting at least an interview for the job. I get what you're saying, but it's a business and they're not passing up a guaranteed biilion over bad press.
Not to mention how Tilda proves that Marvel does what Marvel wants to do, they don't give a fuck if some nerds or some entertainment websites object.

Yeah, it's a weird way to look at this situation and argue that because rapists get to make movies so should racist zealots and abusers.
How about none of them should be getting rewarded for their horseshit, and just because some of them still get work doesn't mean everyone should, or that we should reward it ourselves, either.
But then again, this is always way more a personal decision than anything else: It's up to the individual to weigh how much they're willing to set aside in order to enjoy a movie/an album/a comic book/etc. etc.
There's no one-size-fits-all solution for that kinda shit.

RDJ open to doing another Iron Man, as long as he can bring in a director guaranteed to torpedo the franchise so no one ever asks again.
He insulted everyone in those phone calls. Latinos too. He also said some shit against Asians I think. He must've been on something or was just completely out of it, he sounded insane.
Let me know when the Russo's make something on the level of Braveheart and Apocalypto.

RDJ, and Black for that matter, recovered from bad periods in their lives. It's not like for like. They had substance abuse problems and went sober. Mel's...is more complicated. But I get why they're supportive of it.
