So, why did he think it would be funny for people to hold up a sign reading "death to all Jews"?

Better question is: Why did he think it was a good idea to pay people to hold up a sign reading "Death to all Jews". And then edit the video. And then upload it.

He's an idiot :\

Thats some new kind of internet humour you kinda see on sites like reddit, 4chan, 9gag. I dont get it.

"Whitewashing" the crimes of Nazi Germany by using memes like "Hitler did nothing wrong", using Spongebob images and caption "Auschwitz 1945" and stuff like that.

"lol anti-semitism" isn't funny or edgy. It was juvenile on the internet 20 years ago, it was lazy during the early days of 4chan and it continues to be trash in all its various forms today.

Sure are shit if it was his family that ended up in a concentration camp he wouldn't be making jokes like that. That's the problem here.

My guess is everyone here who sees no issue with this sort of repeated thing at all likely has no personal connections to what happened either.

I cannot get over the levels of stupid you have to be to do this once, get warned not to do it again, then do it again.

So you don't see anything wrong with the video he posted and requested?

There's a huge difference in seeing something wrong with his bad attempt at humor and lumping him in with actual alt-right and Nazis. He did something stupid and racist because he was trying to be edgy and funny. There's a disingenuous attempt in this thread to paint him into a modern day Nazi with sworn allegiance to wipe out other races. It's beyond a stretch.

And to be quite honest, it feels like half the posts in this thread are basking in schadenfreude: personal hate of PewDiePie, the Most Popular YouTube Personality getting his comeuppance... and couldn't care less he did something abhorrent. It reminds me of my burning wish to see BSB and NSync fail as a kid for no good reason other than hating pop music and boy bands.

Lol at people saying he's a nazi/anti-semite.

He's still gonna make fat-ass stacks and have a hot as shit Italian girlfriend anyway.

You... probably should have thought about this post a little bit more than not at all before hitting the Submit Reply button on this one.

The joke is he's getting people to say outrageous stuff. It's the definition of satire. You don't have to like it but the point of the video was not "Jews are scum". It's the absurdity of paying somebody to hold up a sign saying it and them doing it.

So saying "Hitler did nothing wrong" as a joke is also clever satire?

And come on. Like some other poster would have said. He even edited the video, submitted it. And if they wouldnt have done it, who knows? Maybe he would have found someone else to do it.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
That video wouldn't even fly as a prank on college humor or other similar parody or humor associated institution.

I've only ever watched Pewdiepie's videos where he seems to lament stuff going on in his life, such as discussing his income, or stepping away from gaming, and there is sincerity, genuineness, and obvious signs of a bright individual that shine through. His content never was for me, but his true personality seemed to be very respectable.

These recent slate of videos pretty much destroyed that opinion. Not even witty as shock value, just in the most poor taste. You can sort of tell his reaction to the sign reveal possibly shook him, but hard to say. Video should have never been aired and he chose to do so. Disney made the right choice to walk away from him.

Which ignores his later video where he made a "hitler did nothing wrong" joke, without that kind of prompting.

In the Jan. 22 video, Mr. Kjellberg showed a man dressed as Jesus Christ saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.”

Nothing about making random people hold up signs about killing Jews is satirical.

100% mirrors my view on his videos and this situation. Well said.

Didn't he recently make a video in which he talked about how he no longer does this edgy nonsense and cringes at his old stuff?

Holy fuck. You can tell right when they reveal the message he knew he fucked up.

And the proper response to that is to upload it? You see if this had happened live and he didn't know it was going to happen, that one thing, and while still dumb, would be a bit more forgivable. Nah, he made a choice to put it out there.

Again, if this was late night Comedy Central material, no problem (although I still don't find it funny). But his audience, whether he likes it or not, is kids. I don't let my kids watch youtube unsupervised but a lot of people do. These "jokes" (and the rape jokes he used to do) send bad messages.

Maybe I'm just old.

Jontron isn't part of GG anymore, and that was probably part of the reason behind that move.
Ignoring that being part of Gamergate isn't something you can just go "oops my bad" on, you should also take a look at his current antics like openly retweeting Infowars and joining streams with the likes of Sargon of Akkad.

Maker is Disney? I thought Polaris was Disney?

Or is Maker Polaris?

Anyway Pewdiepie is trash for this, but he became popular on the back of rape and r*tard jokes so it's not that surprising

What is it satirizing? Or if it's "just a joke" what is the setup and the punchline?

Still wondering how the hell that's satirical.

The "opinionated Youtube king" stuff is getting old. I felt like they were all capable of pulling that type of nonsense early on but I dont know why

I think it is fine for them to have an opinion, the issue I have is when they actually pretend like they are unbias and unopinionated for the most part. I have to give PhillyD credit since I heard this week he took a stance to call out the outrage that Dear White People was getting but these Youtubers play it so safe for their base with how middle of the road they are.

One reason why I started enjoying PewD content was because he took stances on stuff through his actual humor and real jokes. I'm not sure if he has hit his peak now with this situation coming out since I truly believe he is stupid enough to find what he did funny and he is being very true to himself with his channel now. I don't think there was any malice in his intention but that does not rid him of his actions and it's clear that he think Nazi-humor is the funniest for his channel.

Pssst. I think "GG" in this instance meant Game Grumps.

Look up the definition of satire. It is:

The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

So obviously it is satire because he is exposing his...own....stupidity....? Yeah, I'm out.

It was a terrible joke, but this article and post are completely taking it out of context to push an agenda which many gaffers are falling for. I don't like the guy but he's not antisemitic, and if you want the full context he posted a video response days after the event explaining his thoughts. Tbh this is a really bad thread.

What is he exposing and criticizing?

Yes, what he did was probably stupid. But I think people are missing something here. He doesn't think "Death to all Jews" is funny. He is shocked that the people actually did it. He didn't think they'd do it. Has no one heard of shock humour? It's literally what Louis CK created his brand around. I can't believe how sensitive GAF is getting. He clearly isn't serious here about these being his really thoughts. Maybe it's because I don't live in the USA but man is the internet getting touchy.

It's all about context, shocking humour becomes less funny when it hits closer to home. With the real threat of white supremacy returning in a big way, shocking jokes don't work.

Pewdiepie has been a massive idiot with this stuff though. It is worth pointing out that he has been clumsily trying to parody Donald Trump by comparing him to Nazism, but going about it not so well.

The WSJ have been disingenuous in their portrayal of his history, I feel.

It's because of h3h3

I felt like Pewd improved in quality since collaborating with h3h3 but then when h3h3 turned out to be a piece of shit, I'm not surprised that he ended up being a bad influence.

No, these sorts of edgy jokes were never funny, regardless of who you are or who your friends are.
