Thinking back on the introduction scene to Chris and Rose, it makes sense now. You get shirtless bathroom scene of Chris intercut with scenes of Rose picking out pastries. So it's symbolic of her picking out Chris as the perfect body for her family to sell the same way she would pick something at the bakery.

Also the movie was a great theater experience. The whole audience gasped when Chris' picture was revealed at the bingo auction. That scene alone is really good at getting you worked up to really hate these people. A modern day slave auction. Same when Chris found out Rose was seducing a whole bunch of black people for her family. The whole audience was shocked. So many great shocking moments of horror that don't rely on gore or disturbing visuals. Just shocking revelations.

Also at the end when Chris took a picture of the grandpa, someone in the theater had inadvertently said aloud "SMART!" right after and the theater laughed in agreement. IT's great to see an audience that is invested and can relate to a capable main protagonist and their situation.

Ok did they imply that Tiger Woods was abducted via that old guy saying he knew him?

Also entire crowd of 60% white people cheered at Roses death I was sorta shocked.
Grandma fucked up not getting a athletic body it seems like the rest of tbem. Seems she only wanted the hair

Holy shit what a good movie. Just got out of the theater watching it. I was hoping Rose wasn't involved right up until she couldn't find the keys.

Also I don't think old dude was implying Tiger was abducted by them. He was just trying to relate and build common ground. They were all window shopping at the party.

The old guy is just saying he knows of Tiger. It's just another "I would've voted for Obama a third time" ignorant platitude of trying to connect with someone because of their skin color. But I'm sure he would've liked to snatched Tiger's body for his golf game. That's why he asked Chris if he golfed.

Also how weird must it be to see your grandma and grandpa in a body that you had fucked in the past.

Shit, I missed that. I thought it was just more pandering to relate, but looking back. All of them were sizing him up to see if they wanted him or not.

Something I just noticed -

When Chris is in the chair, how did he get the cotton in his ears? Both his arms and legs were tied down, while he dug into the leather. If he was able to get an arm free, wouldn't he have been able to free himself? Am I forgetting something?

If he was able to get an arm free, how did he re-fasten himself?

I thought that he was gonna get arrested or killed by the cop they met earlier and I felt so relieved when his friend appeared. Sure it would have provided some deep commentary if they stuck with the original but I also wanted Chris to get out alive.

i see what you did there

One thing I want to run by you guys. When the cop appeared in the beginning and asked for Chris ID, what if he was actually trying to save him or warn him or maybe just get his address just in case something happened because he(the cop) already had suspicion of Rose and her family abducting black people? Gives a new dynamic to the strained relationship between us and the police department in that sometimes they just might be of help and not just a nuisance or racially profiling someone

Seems like he could just bend down to get his ears close to his hands and shove it in from there.

I don't think there's enough evidence in the movie of that being the case. If he really wanted to keep him safe he'd investigate the bitch and her family, not get Chris' name and hope for the best.

The thing with the cop was interesting for me. Chris was fine with it because ya know, ain't gonna cause no shit despite the officer being a bit aggressive, but his aggression only came because Rose was instigating everything

I think that scene looking back was not her being "protective", but was her ensuring her victim didn't leave any tracks/get in the system.

Yep, they already established that he was able to get his head down far enough to try and get the buckles off with his teeth. From there youd just have to turn your head.

That also rang true, like a LOT of the movies non-fantastical parts for me and my GF. She's white and when we went ot visit her people she was overly sensitive as well. Why we both had a laugh after the movie and she asked me is that why i waited so long to go meet her people (as they live in a small town in MO.). I was like hell yeah! All black people know small towns = trouble lol.

Actually, thinking about it. If he took Chris' ID. He would have to write him down. When the missing people's report came in... that would be the last place they saw him. It has nothing to do with the Cop, but Rosey trying to remove the paper trial.

So while we think she is scoring points, she's just playing the long con. Gotta go with Chris' friend on this, damn that bitch is good. There was no action that wasn't calculated from her.

I'll be honest, I totally whiffed on guessing where the movie was going. I started to think a bit of the way through that the family were actually just weird and the whole thing was a set-up to get Chris to give up smoking through the hypnosis. His anxiety about the weirdness at the party was just a side-effect of the treatment.

Clearly I was completely wrong. Ironically, he's probably going to be smoking more than ever after that experience.

so this whole taking over the bodies of black people thing started because the grandpa lost a race to that black guy in germany right

like some sick twisted version of if you cant beat em join em

Holy crap.. Now that you said it, maybe so. I'm mad I didn't make the connection with his grandpa and that creepy lawn guy running in the middle of the night

Wait....

Damn, your final sentence makes me look at the question the Asian guy asked in a whole new light.

What makes this movie so great is that you can go back and watch the fifth time and still find something new that you haven't made a connection to in earlier viewings

That was the whole point of their auction.

Each person asked if he was good at something. The woman that felt his muscles was there for her dying husband, the golfer wanted to golf again as he was too old to do so and the blind guy had a passion for art/photography and wanted to see through Chris' eyes. The only way he would be able to do so would be through the brain stuff via Rose's dad, a neurosurgeon.

Allison Williams really impressed me in this. Her range as Rose was great and sold the eventual keys reveal moment.

Her switch to her default demeanor was equally unnerving.

It works both ways. Remember when Rose said, my dad is going to bring up how he would vote for Obama a third time.

Basically all these people are playing up on "compliments", Oh he's a handsome fellow, and big too. I bet he's big down there too. Or, Tiger Woods is good at golf, so maybe you are too. These are all things white people say at times to pander. To show they are down or accepting.

Yet, in this case, they are actually trying to size him up. It puts a twist on it. All the stereotypes used as compliments are also there to see if he has it. It's a slave auction.

Not basically

It was. A silent slave auction

Removed it :p

It's scary how close it is to other films too. Line them up and people come up and ask, "He's a big one and can do this and this". This is what I was impressed about. This is how a films should do their twists. Once revealed, everything prior has a new meaning.

Jim may have been scoping Chris for months and told the family of his location. It explains why he was able to successfully talk to him at the gathering.

I can't believe I didn't make that connection. Damn, this movie really is just packed with little things like that.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I have a quick question.

The small door in Rose's room with the photobook. Seemed real convenient that it was opened. Can we assume it was the maid/grandma leaving it open when she has some kind of control over herself for Chris to find ?

Doesn't make sense why Rose would leave something like that in a place Chris can see it.

Felt more like the auction was over, Rose was accelerating to the finish. If he panics and tries to escape, he was not gonna get far... besides, he wouldn't be able to do anything anyway.

They wouldn't want to damage the goods to say. So I don't think they want him running. My guess was just Rose storing her next trophy.

wasn't it always open every time his phone was unplugged? so i just assumed it was her doing it. Also they relaxed hella a lot once the first hypnosis happened for protecting the operation. Especially b/c Rose was there to watch to see if they needed to do extra

If you recalled, Chris was trying to bite the belts off his arms. He could've easily plugged the cottons in his ears.

Great movie, and I normally hate horror/thrillers. I loved how passive/aggressive the racial commentary was. Acting and writing was on point. Had a few jump scares or scenes that didn't make sense, like when grandpa first ran towards Chris and then darted away. Minor gripes though.

TSA dude stole the show. I laughed every time he came on. Rose was a geniune twist. Also was happy with the ending.

Awesome crowd. Everyone was cheering and reacting throughout the movie lol.

The best thing about this movie (at least in my experience) is how the moment the fun goes away and the audience felt the most terrified... is at the end when the cop car pulls up. You could feel the tension in the air... and then Rod comes out, and the audience just exploded into cheers. Peele basically just stating "Nope, I'm not making another horror movie where the black hero dies!" It's just a fantastic moment in so many ways too, making the scariest moment be something that's all too real.
