Thinking back on the introduction scene to Chris and Rose, it makes sense now. You get shirtless bathroom scene of Chris intercut with scenes of Rose picking out pastries. So it's symbolic of her picking out Chris as the perfect body for her family to sell the same way she would pick something at the bakery.
Also the movie was a great theater experience. The whole audience gasped when Chris' picture was revealed at the bingo auction. That scene alone is really good at getting you worked up to really hate these people. A modern day slave auction. Same when Chris found out Rose was seducing a whole bunch of black people for her family. The whole audience was shocked. So many great shocking moments of horror that don't rely on gore or disturbing visuals. Just shocking revelations.
Also at the end when Chris took a picture of the grandpa, someone in the theater had inadvertently said aloud "SMART!" right after and the theater laughed in agreement. IT's great to see an audience that is invested and can relate to a capable main protagonist and their situation.
