Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Attacking NK, unprovoked, for seemingly no reason, while the wounds of Iraq are still fresh is a horrible, presidency ending move.

How stupid can he possibly be? Nobody takes him by the hand and says "maybe this is a bad idea"

100 day report card is this Sat. The clock is ticking for some other discussion point. Cable TV fellated his pointless Syria flexing, that's the only metric that matters to him.

Tinfoil time: they announced this today and scheduled for Wednesday to tempt NK to do something stupid tomorrow. Isn't there some anniversary happening?

I thought that as well but that's a unique 4some to put together for such a thing.

I don't know why you'd have Mattis, the DNI and the chairman of the joint chiefs if it's a political stunt.

Later he'll claim they came to him for a solution. "Look, they came to me ok. I was like, I was working on the amazing tax cuts and they practically knocked my door down".

We're still officially at war with them. No peace treaty has been established.
It's still unprovoked escalation. There's no peace treaty between Russia and Japan ending World War II either, but you wouldn't expect them to attack each other.

So the night of the election, an ex-military guy I used to work with and hadn't talked to in a while IM'd me out of the blue to a.) 'BERNIE WOULD HAVE WON!!!!' at me, and b.) tell me this meant we'd end up going to war, and it would almost certainly be with North Korea.

I sort of wrote it off at the time, and I don't really think he knows anything special, but it's just kind of lurking in the back of my mind during the recent stuff.

Anyone who joined the military after Trump won is a fool. I don't think that is cruel to say. It's an honest opinion and a correct one I would say. Whether North Korea or someplace else, whether his ratings were great or poor, this man was always going to find a war somewhere.

So the "distract the public from my Russian connection" trial balloons towards Syria and Iran have deflated and now he is trying his best to prop up NK into the pony that will do the trick to make him a wartime president to prolong his sad existence as the 45th.

No? Sounds like they are getting ready to strike first and letting the senate prepare for such a thing.

That or he is going to try threatening them to do what he wants or else.

Yeah I think that's the only reason for this. They are trying to get consent from the senate to strike.

Those two countries aren't completely off the walls batshit insane, either. Both a little kookey in their own ways, but not likely to start threatening to nuke people because their leader woke up and didnt get his lollipop.

All 100 senators have been asked to the White House for the briefing by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the aides said.
Even if it's just a diversion, how does Trump cajole these dudes into playing? Plus, wouldn't that piss off a lot of senators? Like, all of them?

I just finished watching House of Cards Season 4 last night. I fear Trump was doing the same thing..

What on Earth. I'm still waiting to see if anything is to come of Operation Gotham Shield happening imminently. I have a bad feeling about all of this.

Trump supporters should be the only ones in the military right now. If I was serving I'd find a way to get out, not risking my life for this deranged lunatic.

That'd be terrifying. What would stop Trump from using that private army to become President for life?

What if there's a mandatory draft?

I wouldn't join the US military if they offered 500k a year.

Come get me. (Although my age and health would probably disqualify me anyway)

Even if you take Trump out of the picture... NK is quickly becoming a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

They're gonna get nuclear launch capability within years. That's bad. In order to stop them you have to launch a pre-emotive strike that will endanger SK. That's also bad.

My brother-in-law and uncle got out over the last 2 years, but I still have several friends that are active duty. And given the branches they serve in (Navy, USAF, and Marines) they will almost certainly be deployed to NK.

I can't believe we have 3 and a half more years of this.

So... does anyone know Mattis' particular track record on North Korea? Like has he ever put forth a view beyond the 'We will respond if attacked' rhetoric that's been standard operating procedure for the last few decades? Because I'm aware he's probably just waiting for the opportunity to try something with Iran, but maybe he would be less eager about a North Korean (and possibly Chinese) conflict, and try to stay Trump's hand.

I mean, I won't hold out complete hope, but dammit I need something.

Tillerson is a bitch who is as balless as he is clueless. Mattis is... I don't know, sane, but he's made statements before about war and enemies that tells me he probably wouldn't be against going to war with various countries. Not sure on the other two.

I'm too old to be drafted. If a draft were to happen my advice to anyone in that situation would be to leave the country and dont feel bad at all about it.

Thats tough. Must be frustrating for soldiers to see this all unfolding.

If I'm not mistaken, the draft cuts off at 30? Not sure. But with the military our size, I really don't see a draft. Well, there will be tons of red staters running to join if we actually go to war. Not as much as with Iraq, but there's a lot of red hot country boys who think it's their duty to go out there for 'Merica.

Draft is 18-26, if you have a "specialty skill", its up to 45. Don't know what exactly falls under that category but happy to be in my 30s.

I'd gladly fight for a country that gave a shit about its people and worked to better their lives. We don't live in that country anymore so there's no damn way I'd go to war to fight for it.

The draft isn't coming back though so there's no need to worry.

On the other hand I don't feel comfortable with North Korea making nuclear weapons. This is a country ruled by a highly unstable government with puppet Kim at the helm. Ever since the Korean War they have talked and indoctrinated their citizens that we are evil. That you and I are savages. Ask yourself this, do you really trust North Korea in the long run with ICBMs. My opinion might be unpopular here on gaf but something has to be done eventually. This would be a long time coming. But if we do this, do it right. We need everyone on board. Korea, China, Russia.

Can't wait to see the future history texts positing the question if it was justified to obliterate Seoul because America decided to sucker punch North Korea with a nuke.
