Merkel warns US, Britain no longer reliable partners

Europe "must take its fate into its own hands" faced with a western alliance divided by Brexit and Donald Trump's presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.

"The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

"We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands," she added.

While Germany and Europe would strive to remain on good terms with America and Britain, "we have to fight for our own destiny", Merkel went on.

Special emphasis was needed on warm relations between Berlin and newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron, she said.

Western alliance had a good run

Why is that?

Britain hit the brakes on a lot of issues regarding further integration

Because Britain is a huge part of Europe. No Britain in the EU means a weaker and more divided Europe overall. Greater integration among current members probably can't compensate for that.

The only chance is if Macron is actually able to convince Germany that France is ready to be equal partners, which right now looks slim.

It's impossible to have bigger EU integration than before without Britain.

The opposite is true.

In what world aren't Germany and France equal partners?

Its kinda sad, but I actually think it'll be a good thing for the rest of the world to break their reliance on the US. The best thing to come out of Trump. Learning the US is crazy an unreliable. Hard for countries in the short term, but good in the long term, and bad for the US in the long term. They'll probably just all attach themselves to China's tit though.

Maybe not bigger but deeper integration is certainly possible.

I mean Eurozone countries for instance are on a whole different level of integration compared to other EU members.

This is nonsense.

Britain was often the one diving the EU on important issues. Greater integration isn't making europe weaker. If they'd integrate EU armies instantly would be the second largest military power on earth.

The EU economy is currently outperforming the UK and US on economic data and EU approval ratings are at their highest ever.

Sadly a lot of Americans will be happy about this.
I'm happy in the sense that the EU's citizens and governments will probably be safer from Russian aggression than if it stayed dependent on the unstable US government and voting population. Just like I'd be happy if China or the EU took over the top position of the Paris climate deal and leads responsibly in the possible absence of the US. Someone needs to fill the holes Republican Americans keep digging.

What? You really lost me here. Populist Anti-EU politicians are performing better than ever all across Europe. We just had the election in France a few weeks ago where the anti-EU party won an unprecedented 33%!

Culturally, they are different. China does not value open democracy. So there's no danger of EU becoming BFFs with China. Economically, they'll trade where it benefits the EU regardless if it's with China, Russia or the US.

this turmoil shit isn't gonna last.

It will last until the GOP accepts actual facts and doesnt just listen to their golden idol and his propaganda networks, until they actually become educated and realize that everything the right has been telling them is bullshit (the fact that they expected the GOP to bring back jobs, do right by them and improve ACA even though throughout the last two decades its shown the right doesnt fucking care about anyone who isnt rich), and until the GOP in Congress remove this human excrement encased in orange sausage in office.

Hopefully the US is just a brief hiccup and some kind of sanity returns.

I would like to live in that world. Sadly, reading responses to everything showing Russia and Trump collusion, how terrible Trump has been, and other threads here with articles about Trump supporters still riding his dick, I dont think it will change. I mean maybe if they all die off because of 45's policies? However even then I am sure they will say they would vote for him again. His supporters are too far gone and the right is such an anti-American organization its not even funny.

Greece doesn't think the EU is a reliable ally I guess. The whole thing is a mess.

Greece had major internal problems and shouldn't have joined the Eurozone that soon. While the handling of the crisis wasn't perfect either on the EUs part, inferring from it that the whole project is not desirable is reaching.

What point do they have in being part of NATO then ?

You really think if Russia openly attacked another country that is part of NATO, public opinion wouldn't shift immediately more in the way of "Should"?

This is just the German public being it's pacifist self.

As sad as this is to hear, I can't blame the new Leader of the Free World for saying this. All I can do is hope the next president can fix this for us. Ideally, it'd be Mattis, but I'm expecting Pence or Hatch depending on how exactly Trump's term ends early. Because it is a matter of "how," not "if."

I don't know enough about the current political climate in the UK to feel I can make a worthwhile statement.

I didn't say anything about the whole project being bad,so stop reaching... 😛

I voted remain and think we have fucked ourselves over. The rich and powerful got their way by influencing the gullible. The EU isn't 100% amazing but it is far better then Brexit.
