Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

How are these games for someone who, um, enjoyed HoI 3?

If you enjoyed the battle mechanics of HOI and were looking for something similar but more challenging and punishing they're worthwhile. There are many similar mechanics such as logistics and the importance of terrain.

Installed Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition, entered game, hard crash. Tried multiple times, same result.

People say PC gaming is now as simple as console gaming, but I've never played a console game that can't pass the title screen. At least I can refund. Fuck this shit.

I agree it can be frustrating, that one was poorly handled for sure, but uh, DSFix is your friend you should use it. If you PC game Durante is a name you should always know and trust

Known issue, DSFix fixes it literally lol

Played through the entire game with my buddies, clocked over 50 hours, worth it.

Edit: beaten lol

Then it must be very good, because we recently had:

The Witness (-66% off The Witness+Braid Bundle, €17,78)
header_586x192.jpg

and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (85% off, €2.84).
header.jpg

Not exactly Myst-like I know, but close enough.

I love The Witness (it was my favorite game of 2016), but I'm kind of picky and don't consider it to be in whatever sub-genre Myst is in. If you include it you also have to include The Talos Principle which is incredible as well. I wouldn't include The Vanishing of Ethan Carter since it's really a "walking sim", though I will say it has a much better narrative than Quern does. Quern is probably the only non-Cyan game other than Haven Moon that actually feels like Myst though in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere.

Thanks, but I've settled my mind. By principle I will not let the devs have my $20 when I can't even use their product. My PC will remain the indie and VN machine it has always been.

Just grabbed a $20 Steam card and I'm partly tempted to just blow it on Dishonored 2. Hows the performance these days?

Pretty rough at launch, according to most people it's a lot better now. Performance on my GTX 770 was still pretty disappointing though when I finished the game a few weeks ago.

But if you have a decent rig, go for it. Great game.

Redout 60% off ($13.99)

There's a few AG racing games on Steam and of the ones I've played Redout is currently my favorite. Blisteringly fast and gorgeous, consider using a controller for this one because on top of steering with the left stick you'll need to use the right stick to modify your trajectory in order to navigate the trickier corners at high speeds. The DLC track packs are also worth picking up.

Now check out these screenshots and this video of all the tracks in one of the DLC packs stitched together with portals.

28 Euro Steam Credit but nothing I bought until now. My backlog is huge, only a few hours these days for gaming. I need to stay strong, but at least one game I would like to buy. But which one?

I think it needs to be one of the gems in this thread.

anyone know of any card game gems? I tend to like games like Star Realms, or hybrid crpg games like Guild of Dungeoneering or Card Hunter or even abstract card games like Hand of Fate [loved it]... I'm less into 'design your deck' games that have you playing people with $100 decks.

I've been playing a lot of Monster Slayers lately

It's a prettier take on Dream Quest, which is among my favorite games... ever.

Both are roguelike dungeon crawlers. You choose a class, which determines your starting deck and potential level up cards and what not, but then loot and everything is a card that goes into your deck. It plays a little like Dominion/Ascension/Star Realms, but single player against a dungeon full of monsters with their own prebuilt decks. IMO so far, Dream Quest is better gameplay, but Monster Slayers isn't so programmer art-y. Both are worth playing.

That was an IOS game. Have they add all the DLCs in this version? It was a good game. Im recommending it.

Oh man...I have every iOS expansion for The Quest Classic. Easily one of the best in the genre.

What other games are out there like this? First person classic RPGs I mean?

Quest feels great on PC and the main expansion (fire and ice) is available. It really is a great game with that old school Elder Scrolls feel.

Also, everyone should get Shadowrun games, it's $10 for all 3!

I grabbed Hollow Knight and it's not really doing it for me...

Sucks cause I could really got for a good Metroidvania right now but I just don't like the floatiness of the jumping and the way they handle the maps...

Hollow Knight is one of the best in the genre, but the first 2-3 hours are not as compelling as the rest of it. From a world traversal standpoint, it's actually closer to a Souls game (short-cuts, limited fast travel, massive interconnected world) and mapping is something you grow to enjoy (or at least tolerate).

Definitely agree with others that you should get Dead Cells, but it's a completely different animal. Like 99% combat.

It was the first phone game that showed me they can indeed stack up against console games. The Quest shits on something like Skyrim. Really excited for the sequel, which should release this year if it's not delayed again.

As for similar games, the closest I can think of are the Legend of Grimrock games. Has a stronger focus on environmental puzzles, though, which could be a good or bad thing depending on preferences.

So many rogue style games lately. I loved FTL due to being semi turn based (you could pause) and being able to work towards unlocking things in future (not just die and start over with nothing to show forever)

What would be a good rogue like for me based on this?

Dungeon of the Endless, which happens to be 75% off!

Does anyone have experience with Under Night In Birth Exe:Late? I've barely seen any mention of it anywhere, but I really like the style and it has a pretty good discount for a fighting game. Does it have much going for it if you don't have anyone to play it with?

UNIEL is a fantastic fighting game and definitely one of my favorite anime fighters. It has some balancing issues but the mechanics are so smart and it's such a slick game to play. The art style and character designs are very cool too. That being said, I'm only interested in playing competitively and with others, so I'm not sure how much I'd recommend it for single player. It has your standard arcade, versus cpu, time attack, survival, and score attack modes but I never touched them so I can't really say much on them.

DEADBOLT - $6.99 (30% off)
A stealth action game where you play as a grim reaper and hunt down gangs of undead abominations. It feels a bit like Hotline Miami crossed with Gunpoint. Enemies kill you in one shot, so you have to plan your moves carefully, aim for headshots, and take advantage of the environment whenever possible. What really made this game stand out for me was its variety. It has 27 missions and I'm pretty sure every single one of them introduces at least one new enemy, weapon, environmental interaction, or stage gimmick.

Concrete Jungle - $4.41 (66% off)
A deck-building board game styled like a city builder. You play cards to develop the town, altering property values of adjacent tiles. The goal is to develop houses on high value land. During a match, you can adjust your deck further by adding new cards. Has solo missions where you just have to develop a lot of land well and vs-AI missions where you compete with another player to develop the best land. I believe it has local multiplayer too, though I haven't tried it.

Tetrobot and Co. - $2.99 (70% off)
A great puzzle game where you guide a tiny robot around the insides of bigger robots. The main mechanic is an ability to suck up and spit out different types of blocks. Starts a little slow, but becomes very interesting as it goes on.

Cosmic Express - $8.49 (15% off)
A simple and adorable puzzle game about creating a train track to deliver aliens to their homes. Gets challenging pretty quickly and has some brutal endgame puzzles. Also part of a bundle with Sokobond and A Good Snowman is Hard to Build.

anything similar to ori/hollow knight/axiom verge
Aquaria - Underwater exploration metroidvania. Great visuals and music. Voiced story along the way.

Castle in the Darkness - Tough retro metroidvania type. Lots of bosses. It's long and has quite a lot of secrets. Be aware though that it has instant death spikes and no map. I found it to be really rewarding gameplay wise in the same way that I found certain NES games very rewarding.

Elliot Quest - Retro metroidvania action platformer. One thing I really liked about the game was that nothing was really explained to you, you had to figure out things by your own just like classic NES games. Has fun Zelda like puzzles and lots of secrets.

Odallus: The Dark Call - Stage based metroidvania. Reminds me a bit of Castlevania in the way i looks and plays. Fun game overall.

Pharaoh Rebirth+ - I think this game resebles the modern Castlevania games in its structure the most. It's stage based with large areas to explore. Lots of stuff to collect. Great game. Only downsides is that it has a lot of useless dialogue that interrupts gameplay and it has one level where you're just driving a car and jumping over holes by trial and error gameplay with a bad shooting section from the same car later in the level.

La-Mulana - Hard metroidvania type game with some very obscure puzzles. Lots of traps you have to avoid. I had a lot of fun with the game, except that I had to use a walkthrough for a lot the late game. Great music. Be aware that some things you can collect are missable. You also need to find the holy grail in the first temple area before venturing further or you can get permanently stuck (Unless they've changed this). It's a very long game.

Oh a question I can answer. I'm not home so I can't give you an exhaustive list, but you should look into might and magic x legacy, paper sorcerer, star crawler, grimrock, the fall of the dungeon guardians, stranger of sword city, operation abyss and operation babel.

I've beat most of the above so let me know if you have any questions. My recommendations would vary based on exactly what you were looking for, etc

And while it's not exactly in the same genre get sanctuary rpg as well

If you want to go old school you can check both steam and gog for wizardry, might and magic, and many more.

Talos isn't open world like Witness or Myst are, not in the same subgenre

I know this isn't really the place to keep discussing this so I'll keep it brief. I've wanted to start a thread discussing all these First Person Puzzler's and First Person Adventure games for a while now actually (but probably never will). Technically each of those 3 games could be in their own sub-genre, but at that point it gets to be a bit much for me.

First Person Adventure - This is Myst. Obviously a twist on the point-and-click adventure genre. There's very few, if any, structured and repeated game mechanics. The puzzles are extremely varied and organically mesh with the environment and story.

First Person Puzzler - This would be The Witness and The Talos Principle. These games are built around specific mechanics. It's more rigid and structured, and it's more about understanding and mastering the rules. Each puzzle in The Witness is a line panel (though it does play with this a little bit), and each puzzle in The Talos Principle is about using the the games limited tools to reach the tetrominos.

Now, why I actually came to the thread was to recommend this game I bought a while ago but finally played today:

Verde Station $0.49 (-90%)

You could definitely call it a "walking sim" though it does have some light puzzle solving. It only takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.

This is a repost (from last year) but the Umihara Kawase games I list have become more cheaper now.

header.jpg

Sayonara Umihara Kawase - is 70% off so it costs $4.49

http://store.steampowered.com/app/378750/

It is a physics-based puzzle-platformer which is all gameplay, no story. There are 60 stages in total, the game can have a very steep learning curve for you to learn techniques and for how to find a solution to a stage.

That is why I provide a Physics Guide linked here: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1298029
so that it can help people to finish the game so that they may want to try previous entries in the series hence:

header_586x192.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/85452/

There is a Trilogy of the series available to buy on Steam. It is 70% off so it costs $8.99

This comes with the original Umihara Kawase which released on SNES, Umihara Kawase Shun: Steam Edition which is based off the PlayStation game and then Sayonara Umihara Kawase if you hadn't already bought that.

You have the option of buying all 3 games separately if you happened to already own one of them.

Thanks for the recommendations. The only game in this genre that I've played is Orcs and Elves on NDS but I loved it all the way through. I'll have to check out the games you mentioned.

Forgot to recommend Induction ($4.99, 50% off)
Played an early demo of this a while back, was quite impressed. It's an easy recommendation if you're into puzzle games that teach you through experimentation and level design. I found it's implement of time travel and time loops quite unique. Time loops in games is usually just you restarting a level alongside a copy of your previous actions. Induction gets way more complicated than that in how it gamifies loops and time travel.
Played this for about two hours, and it's really good so far. It's very much a "wait a second...if I need this to happen...maybe I can do this...oh shit, it worked" kind of puzzler. A lot of learning by doing, where you want to replay a level you solved a few times to make sure you understand what you did
induction-loop-4.gif

This game really interests me.
How long is it? And how fast does it move? I'm obviously not expecting some fast pace action thing but is it like "Oh no, here is a locked door. Now I have to rewire three panels all across this station" kinda game or does it have a good flow?

Well I don't remember much about the game itself because I played it years ago, but what I do recall is that the puzzles are more or less self contained on the planet you're currently on and they didn't drive me insane like the ones in Deponia. I can't think of anything negative to say about the game, so I guess that's a good thing, haha.

And oh yeah, I just remembered, the dialogue is a bit stiff, but I think that's to be expected.

Buy this little gem if you enjoy games like Two The Moon. It is a short story driven adventure game with some puzzles and hidden collectibles.

Buy it. Gift it to your mom.

Soundtrack is great too and adds much to the atmosphere and emotions of the game.

It's actually 25% off of $9.99, with a current sale price of $7.49. I would've jumped on it at 75% off of $7.50, lol.

Tried the demo; the frame pacing issue was less but still there.

I'm playing the demo now and just finished the first mission. Really enjoying myself, and for the most part performance seems pretty good.

I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a purchase.

Edit: Just realized I'm not in the regular Steam sale thread. So sorry!

Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander is a bit of a mix between FTL, 4X and RPG. It's pretty good, a bit repetitive in parts but very well worth the price and there is a big upgrade coming in soon.

I mean, yeah, Wipeout any time, but a)That's more expensive and b)That's not on PC (well, it is through remote play I guess).
