Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

Any action-RPG's with a lot of customization or build/ weapon variety hiding out there? Already have Valdis Story and Victor Vran

I don't know why there's a rogue-like tag on it in Steam, but it's definitely not a rogue-like, and I love rogue-likes/lites.

The game is awesome. Fantastic soundtrack, great lore and fiction, and of course, the combat is stellar. I just about guarantee you'll like it if you like mechs and synthwave.

Played up to the mission where Singh finally gets ammo. When does the difficulty really get going?

Nearly at the end of it and it's really good, incredible atmosphere, interesting story, tight gameplay and fantastic visuals. Unless the ending is terrible I'd give it 8/10. If you're a fan of FPS campaigns you'll enjoy this one. £3.74.

If you're new to the series you should get the bundle which includes the first game as well.

Alright hidden gem/card game loving GAF. I'm probably only going to get one (possibly two) of these card games from this sale. Any rec's on which?

Faerie Solitaire

Solitairica

Monster Slayers

Guild of Dungeoneering

Ironclad Tactics

Card City Nights

I'll probably end up getting one of the two Solitaire games and one of the other four. As bad as this sounds, I'm slightly hesitant on getting Card City nights since I swear in past sales it's been as little as $0.99 and now it's like $3. something.
I played Card City Nights on mobile. Best mobile game I've ever played. I didn't know it was on Steam though... And there's a sequel coming! Hell yeah!

Grim Dawn does it really well where you essentially pick two skill trees to make a class. You get a fair amount of skill points every level so it's actually pretty quick to start having a realized build.

There's also Path of Exile, which I'm not really a fan of personally, but it's pretty much theorycrafting, the game.

So, I actually just checked for Solitirica and Guild of Dungeoneering on mobile....and they are pretty much the same price as on Steam (Guild was a buck more, but it also came with the expansions already built in). I had some Google play credits so I ended up buying both of em for Android. This built in a little extra money for the rest of my cart and allowed me to add in Xanadu Next (or Halycon 6. Until then it was one or the other). Thanks for bringing mobile up, I never would have thought of that otherwise! Gonna have to keep my eyes out for that Card City Nights sequel, as well.

I asked earlier but didn't get a response... does Brigador play well with a controller?

Not sure if the updated version does, but the original controller support was pretty bad, but I'm not sure how much of that is because of the unique or some might say shitty control scheme.

Kingdoms of Amalur is amazing. There is Van Helsing games if you are looking for isometric rpgs. There is also Titan Quest and Torchlight but you probably know them. Are you specifically looking for Diablo like games?

If a pc game has controller support that's not a fps , I'm always using the controller . That being said , two minutes into the tutorial for Brigador and I quickly switched to keyboard and mouse . It's pretty clunky but works very well with keyboard and mouse .

Ok. Well, that's a no buy for me. I use a trackpad on my laptop and some games I really want to play just don't work. I either get hand strain from that, or the lack of a numpad messes me up. I know I could get a mouse or bt keyboard, but I also know that's just not going to happen [my pc gaming tends to be 'here and now', not 'get on a table and set everything up'].

Dungeon of the Endless nearly broke my wrist, and that was barely action, lol.

Darn.

Thanks for the answer, though, it's exactly what I needed to know.

I've only played a bit but it did play well. It takes a bit of getting used to because it's not like a twin stick shooter: the right analog actually controls a cursor, because distance to the target affects the vertical angle of shooting. Also make sure you set crouch to toggle instead of hold, because it's very hard to crouch, aim and shoot with a controller otherwise.

Edit: I may have been to late, heh. I would recommend you give it a try; you can always refund it and this case would be a 100% justified one.

Someone mentioned DROD earlier [specifically, Gunthro and the Epic Blunder]. It is in my cart, but then i searched for 'DROD' to see if there was anything else... and noticed there are like a bazillion DROD games.

Can anyone give a primer on which one I should buy? Don't want to spend much, my cart is almost whittled down to what I can spend.

Any horror games on the level of Corpse Party in regards to atmosphere and spooks?

How is Mad Doctor? That seems to be around that kind of aesthetic. And I know people mention The House of Fata Morgana a lot, but is that more about unnerving vs actual spookiness?

I hesitate to call either of these "hidden gems" or "under the radar" but they're old and very cheap (both just over $1 US) so if you got some money from cards or are just looking for pickups before the sale ends, I recommend them:

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
is one of those games where it's almost too easy to say it's ahead of its time. A very mature (as in adult, not pornographic), very twisted sci-fi story told as a SCUMM point-and-click adventure game (and not especially cryptic, either). I had long heard it was very good, I finally picked it up in this sale, and so could you.

I feel like everyone must have VVVVVV by now but if not, it's very cheap and oh man is it worth playing. Do you like platforming? Do you like awesome music? This isn't easy but it's short and it's a very satisfying experience. Play this!

Any recommendations for a colonial era city building game? I already have Banished but haven't played it much. Looking for something that has more outside interaction. Think city building combined with RTS.

Both great games but not exactly hidden gems as they each have over 1.7 million sales on PC.

Stick to Gunthro.

If you want to buy the DLC, you can get all 3 for the price of 2: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/1847/DROD_The_Original_Trilogy/

one last reminder - check out Sanctuary RPG!

Stick to Gunthro.

Ugh. I guess I'll get the DLC... was already slightly over budget but....

Final List, mostly from this thread:

Bastard Bonds $5.43
Redemption: Eternal Quest $0.59
Act of War: Direct Action $0.74
Act of War: High Treason $0.74
Highlands $1.99
Original War $0.99
DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder $2.49
DROD DLC
868-HACK $4.12
Emerge: Cities of the Apocalypse $3.19
Faerie Solitaire $0.99
Elysium Blood Games $0.89

Cart total is 24.65, slightly over my $20 budget.

Games I -really- wanted to get but had to cut:

Voidspire Tactics $7.49
Unexplored $7.99
Dungeon Rats $6.74
UnderRail $7.49
Endless Legend™ - Classic Edition $7.49
The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians $6.79
Dream Quest $4.99
SatelliteReign $4.19
Rise to Ruins $4.99
Domina $4.99
Massive Chalice $1.99

Hmmm. Maybe I should get Massive Chalice and drop the DROD dlc. Will think on that.

I bought it, its still early I havent played it too much but it feels off. The camera is wonky and I am getting some slight hiccups. This very well could just be a me problem though.

Thanks, I think I'll hold off.

Any suggestions people ? I'm tempted to pick up Dead Space 2 for a replay at higher settings.

Don't think I've seen this recomended yet. It's a Metroid/Castlevania (sorry not using that word) platformer with Inventory type puzzles thrown in. Great pixel art graphics and cool music. The jumping is a little floaty but you get used to it.

Steam question... how do you even find this? It's not listed under the DLC for DROD, and when I search 'DROD original' it doesn't show up... I'm wondering how many other bundles I'm just blind to

It appears on the individual page of the DLC. It is unusual for a bundle not to be listed on the page of the main game, don't worry about it.

Before this sale ends, I want to ask if there's any good atmosphere surreal games anyone might recommend on Steam that are more hidden? For general but I'm also interested if there's any I don't own which anyone might recommend.

Knytt Underground
Anodyne
Postmortem: One Must Die
Talos Principle (not hidden per se but it fits the surrealism criteria)
Magnetic: Cage Closed (also kinda fits)

I double checked, but legit surprised nobody mentioned Tharsis

http://store.steampowered.com/app/323060/Tharsis/

It's at 67% discount (4,94€).

It's Dark Souls of board games a single player strategic board game were you control the crew of a spaceship in their trip to Mars. Each round you can deploy each of the crew members to different parts of the ship and perform actions depending of the state of the ship or which crew mate. Every action is decided by dice throws, so there is a big luck facto also involved.

The game is quite short, but it's high difficulty is going to guarantee that you will have to retry the mission plenty of times, learning step by step how to take advantage of the systems. You can't deql with every problem and you will have to make sacrifices in order to reach Mars after 10 rounds.

The game can be brutal and one mistake can throw all your plans out of the window, and ti will throw more wrenches that you can manage 5moreso in the finla rounds). It can be very frustraiting if you don't like luck taking a front row, but I like the unrcentaty of some situations, and having to balance risk/reward. There are also plenty of tools to increase your odds, like getting more dices, neutralizing some penalties, taking advantage of the different abilities of the crew, etc.

I haven't been able to finish the game yet, but the story is minimalistic and intriguing so far, although it's not the focus of the game.

There are also side missions with different conditions to beat and also crew members to unlock. There is also higher levels of diffculty, but I can't even think how brutal that must be.

Presentation is quite minimal and it's basically some pretty menus contextualized:

It has several reviews on steam, but they are more due to the difficulty (it was launched without the easy mode) and lack of patience from people.

Give it a go if you want some challenge.

Might be an odd one but is there a game on Steam that is similar to Valkyrie Profile? Never played the original but I always hear people talking very good about it and I liked to know what kind of game it is. I know that Indivisible is coming next year (which I will pick up on Switch for my commute) but is there anything else? The original aren't available on PSN.

WUPPO! So i played the demo last night and it sold me on the game. It is sort of an RPG-Adventure game?..It sort of reminds me of Tomba in a sense that you have to find an item that one guy wants to get another item and so on. It has cute hand drawn graphics with some really funny writing. Try the demo, my save carried over! It also has 99% positive reviews.

You should check Hyper Light Drifter. I didn't finish it but I enjoyed the time I had with it.

I came close to buying Hyper Light Drifter, but I have to ask if it's difficult to make out things in the environment with that art style? I watched videos and I can't tell what's what aside from enemies, so it sort of scared me off.

I don't see any element that coild put it in the RPG genre. It's more like an adventure game with simple combat. I hope you enjoy the game, for me it's amazing so far.

I beat the game yesterday and it was never a problem for me. Awesome game, by the way.

I am just going by the Steam "genres", but it has some light RPG elements. It appears you get a few different weapons and upgrade them, you have an inventory and can use various items and it plays sort of like an RPG as opposed to a P&C adventure game. Definitely an adventure game at heart though.

Played a bit of Downward and damn. This is fun. Its a Mirrors Edge kind of game in some kind of hub worlds. Has a system where you get artifacts to enter areas you couldnt enter before. Feels like its really fun and the full game comes out on 13th:

I never really play the campaign. I play the other missions and they can get pretty damn hard pretty quickly.
