Yeah. It might be better for the game if America won on ESPN but that was exactly the kind of hype top 8 that was needed

Like someone said earlier:

- hype top 8
- espn/Disney coverage
- new content incoming

If ssfv turns out to be real and a solid balance update adding new mechanics.. it's looking promising.

Well to me it's hard to top 2015 because Momochi vs Gamerbee was much closer. Momochi vs Infil was incredibly close with Infil changing characters. Gamerbee vs Infil was a grind, but super enjoyable. You had Nemo's incredibly entertaining Rolento (normally don't like the character). And although I would never want it to happen again, the controller issue in grandfinals made the whole thing even more dramatic.

Gamerbee vs Infiltration is still my favorite SF4 Evo match of all time.

Then the Grand Finals...brutal.

Street Fighter V
Tekken 7
Smash 4
King of Fighters XIV
Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

I get the feeling that EVO's going to be dropping some anime, in favor of more popular western games. Just like how EVO Japan is dropping some western favorites in favor of more anime.

Sadly agree MvC: I is likely an auto-berth, as much as I fear that game might shit the bed. EVO's a good partner for fighting game devs/publishers and they'll support it.

Smash Melee is my curiosity. You get the feeling EVO doesn't want it, but there's no argument that it isn't wildly successful and brings people out. I think even if EVO wanted to get rid of it, they'd still stick it in the fan thingie and it'd get voted in like Mahvel this year. I think if there was a pressing game worth including over it, then it'd get pushed out. But most of the big fighting games for 2018 won't be until later in the year.

My guess? Super Street Fighter 5, Smash 4, Smash 64, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Injustice 2, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Guilty Gear, Fan Vote.

Tokido is my favorite player and I am so happy that he finally won Evo with Street Fighter.

I wasn't biggest fan of Punk and his teabagging attitude, but I think he is an amazing talent and it's great to watch his play (as someone who loves Karin). I hope he can come out of this experience stronger.

Incredible top 8 for SF. Felt the most invested in years, most of the matches were all incredibly hype, and that Grand finals. Just amazing. Edge of your seat stuff.

Punk is an amazing amazing player, but for some reason he stiffened up after the reset. Or maybe Tokido and Mago scouted him very well?

Experience gap. Punk is super talented and skilled at the game but he hasn't been on that stage and in that situation as many times as Tokido has. He cracked and couldn't recover in time.

Today age and experience won. That's why I am happy. Ma boy Tokido was long overdue for an EVO win. Punk was seeing stars by the time it was 5-0 straight. I bet he haven't took a beating like this in his life when it comes to SF. His knowledge of FG is limited and fundamentals are weak compared to players who are playing FGs before he was even born and it showed. Hope he will be less arrogant now and learned a thing or two.

If you think about it, 2 years in to it's life, SFIV was nowhere near the great game it ultimately became after a lot of balancing and refining

Hopefully Punk realizes this eventually. He's beating himself up pretty bad at them moment

That's what happens when you are super arrogant and think you won the game even before you start playing. He just got a reality check. Hope he learns a thing or two. Maybe he should have wore those pokemon hats and gave free rounds to Tokido.

How did you get that impression given the guy looked scared as hell and had tears in his eyes before the finals even started?

Really hoping Punk and Du sit and stew on the humble pie they got. They've been super fucking cocky kids this past year.

i'm really looking forward to dbz fighterz if that goes grand stage

Yeah, I'm actually a bit worried. EVO spreads the main stage love between publishers. This year it was Capcom, Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Aksys (and then Mahvel won the fan vote). Each publisher basically picks their fav, which is why BlazBlue got highlighed over the more popular Guilty Gear.

So the question is, come July 2018 will Bandai Namco still want to tout Tekken 7 as its main game? Or will they pick DBZ? Tough to say.

Only guarantees I see so far (and your 5 main stage games) are SFV, Tekken 7, Smash 4, Marvel, and DBFZ

You can probably put Injustice on that list too.

If Blazblue Tag comes out that goes on there, if not Guilty Gear

King of Fighters probably gets another shot after the amazing finals this year.

Leaving one game to the Donation drive, which Melee dominates.

Or Melee gets the 8th slot, and I have no idea who wins that donation drive.

Man too many fighters next Year. I think Injustice may show up again due to NRS doing their own "CPT." and evo is one of the stops. DBFZ maybe a saturday game depending on how it's received.

Punk called himself the Alpha and has been cocky/arrogant all year. He has the skill to back it up which is fine and he has a lot of fans but I definitely don't feel too bad for him. He destroyed people and looked down on them, now he's on the other end. Its brutal and he'll come back from it, I don't doubt it but I'm not going to feel for him tonight.

surely we'll unearth it guys

THERE ARE DOZENS OF US

(For real though, that Demon was one of the dirtiest things I've ever seen. That crowd eruption and commentator reaction was amazing, my eyes were bugging out.)

So glad there's gonna be 2 EVOs a year...
You know it's gonna be hype.

Winning the inaugural year is gonna have some great fights.
Would be crazy if Japan had bad luck winning SF in it. :p

Yep it's going to be sick! Every 6 months we'll have EVO and I can't wait!

Talk about some serious narrative inventing just because you don't like a guy.

There was nothing that showed that or that punk was super arrogant about anything tonight. Probably to his detriment. And he also probably faced the one person in the top 8 he didn't want to see

Have you not seen Punk in any tournaments?

Yeah sure, but I was referring to here. It didn't seem like he was coming at it like he thought it was his to take. And maybe that was his mistake. He seemed really tense and nervous instead of just playing loose and having fun like he normally does in tournaments.

Sajam/Chen mentioned that Tokido recently beat Punk in a FT10. Without 2/3 Punk was in trouble.

SFV
MvC:I
Xrd
DBZF
Smash 4
Melee
IJ2
Tekken 7

These 8 seem like locks for next year. NRS and 3D games need a rep, and the other 6 are all going to do good numbers.

KOF14's attendance was really low and it's going to be really hard to justify a return from the TO's perspective.

He was really upset on stage after during the medals. Think he thought he had it in the bag, which was probably a lesson.

Tokido made him look almost free too, so it's hard to take. But he'll learn that you gotta lose sometimes.

i don't think so. even in the goofy interview before the finals with gootecks he said he was nervous to face tokido. He showed a surprising amount of deference. makes sense since apparently tokido slapped him in casuals they played earlier that weekend.

Thank you and well said. Funny hearing all these salty tears like he is and has been a fragile puppy.

I do hope EVO Japan will be just as hype as this.

Jiyuna in the anime suite was just talking about that and he said he doubted it would be. Takes place near the end of the season, where people would just want to relax. It wouldn't be international bc people not in japan will just want to destress at that time and not travel 9 hours.

You and your hot takes.. super arrogant lol
