Hit Manga "One Piece" Getting Live-Action TV Show from Prison Break producer

They don't even have to be kids. Al is a suit of armor the entire show and you can easily make Ed a teenager or even an adult in their late teens, early 20's.
See you could tweak the stuff if ya want but then you're just compromising the story. These shows work well because they're animated. They're also kind of corny, cheesy, and dumb but not in endearing ways.

Let's say HBO adapts FMA:B, do you realize how drastic and more mature they would have to make that thing?

What the fuck?

No idea how this would work.

I hope this project doesn't damage the image of OP and put people off reading the manga.

I really don't think this project could do anything to harm the odds of someone reading one piece that 4 kids hasn't already done.

I mean if it sucks it sucks it's been like 20 years. if someone was going to be turned off one piece they would have already.

on the flip side if it sucks they might talk about it and their friend might tell them the original was better and get more people to read it.

You really think so? I felt the trailers so far looked laughable tbh. And I enjoyed the Kenshin movies.

yeah I really think so. is it a perfect look no. but given I set my bar at the live action dbz movie I would say the fma movie looks pretty solid lol.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

FMAB is already that so I'm not sure what you're talking about and aging Al up a little wouldn't change the dynamics or anything and as pointed out, he's 15 in the story so he's not a child.

You can adapt the whole East Blue arc in a 13 episodes season I think. The season finale is Laboon.

Nah, end with the escape from Loguetown. Great ending place, and if the series bombs you don't have to spend money figuring out how to do some of the Grand Line stuff when devil fruits become much more common.

You'd still be adapting 100 manga chapters and 53 anime episodes into 13 (presumably) hour long episodes. Tough, but you can shorten a lot and merge other stuff.

See, the thing is, the Pirate Motif sounds really, really cool. The early chapters of Shanks and Luffy make for a great set-up from a pirate perspective, not unlike any of the PotC films. Bandits, revenge, destiny, sea monsters all could work.

The super-natural or super-human stuff is where it'll feel tacky. That stuff ALWAYS feels tacky, even with a budget. Not even super hero movies can pull it off that well. Cap and Iron Man get grounded hella easily with combat costumes, machinery, tech, gadgets, and gizmos. Once you go beyond into actual deformation, and super power fuckery, you might as well get Willy Wonka on the phone.

The human elements, a.k.a. the core of One Piece, can be done, but I'm worried about pulling off the translation. Somehow, whether subbed, dubbed, or translated, you get the vibe of the world and DEFINITELY how Luffy, Zoro, etc. all these characters act. - their dreams and hopes. If you give it to (presumably) Western actors reading lines from an altered script, are they going to bring the voices to life? Cause I'll tell ya, the VA cast has already nailed that part for me.

Wasn't the cancellation due to Toei wanting more money and Demarco thinking the ratings didn't justify it?
Even though this was an easy fix by not putting it on at 2:30 in the middle of the night and following it after the boring-as-shit Naruto Shippuden which was going through a filler arc when One Piece was removed.

its also the fact that toonami people have never liked one piece, most of toonami is only based around nostalgia.

In part but stuff like One Punch Man was one of their biggest hits. Not too mention One Piece is old enough to for people to be nostalgic about it

I still feel One Piece is hurt by a combination of:

-People who watched the 4kids dub and disregarded it since then.
-An Art Style that is not anime enough.
-A Dub, that while great, its EXTREMELY behind current events.
-A solid fanbase that mostly watched subs or read the manga because the dub is so behind, its almost impossible to avoid spoilers.
-Sheer length makes it hard to convince people to give it a try, specially newcomer who are not into Shonen.

Could work as some sort of hokey Fox show with F&F levels of diversity and a decent budget. Also if they take huge liberties with the plot (Zoro is just a samurai, not a 3 sword wielding samurai).

But realistically, this is going to never get off the ground like the SAO TV show announced and stated in a trailer for the animated movie, Tiger and Bunny movie by Ron Howard, Monster series by Del Toro, and Naruto, Bleach, and AoT live action Hollywood adaptions by WB. A lot of Hollywood live action adaptions tend to be announced at events like this that never end up happening due to behind the scenes roadblocks.

episode 1 will probably introduce crocodile as the bad guy

he has a claw and a cool power. and he's very evil. gotta get that established in the first five minutes.

Let's be honest. We might get some casting, directors, and writers. Hell, we might even get a pilot episode. But the chances of it getting to the pilot is so slim and even if a pilot gets made, it will be one of those pilots we never see and get cancelled after showing it to the higher ups in the company.

as a fan that is mostly caught up with the anime in japanese the dub is actually at a pretty solid spot. far enough back that I don't remember everything and since oda sets up so many things far in advance it's great noticing a ton of stuff I didn't notice the first time because I didn't care about the names at the time lol.

Still, it's popularity doesn't seem to really ever have a chance to expand outside of what it is.

One piece has always had a problem of introduction in America. 4 kids ruined the first impressions but Toonami started airing the show too far in. Alot of people were scared to watch it until they caught up on their own. I don't know what the solution really is but it's such a good series, it easily should be above something like the bleach fandom in America.

If Zoro doesn't put a sword in his mouth then what is the god-damned point?

every once in a while I see a thread title so absolutely absurd that I just have to take a deep breath and look around to make sure Ashton Kutcher isn't waiting outside my periphery

this was one of those times

Maybe Netflix?

The only way to watch One Piece is to marathon One Piece. Watching one new episode a week on Toonami sounds like complete torture, especially in this age of binge watching.

If FUNi could somehow set up a deal with Netflix where, say, 20 episodes of One Piece are added and featured every other week, I feel like that would get a ton of eyeballs on it and people would be willing to give it a chance. I keep hearing stories about how people randomly stumble onto anime on netflix and they quickly fall in love with the stuff.

I feel like it only has a chance after the anime has ended, where it gets a Kai-esque reboot. And even then... meh.

The biggest barrier to the series is the length of it. You see it all the time here on GAF, and everywhere else. Another being based around just how the world is built with the adventure in mind doesn't hold much appeal either. Part of the reason you don't hear much about OG Dragon Ball in the West.
Only thing that can reasonably be done is a Kai-esque reboot, and that'll probably never happen.

I actually like this idea.

It doesn't?
