CEO of Niantic booed onstage at Pokemon Go Fest. App unplayable, many still in line

http://kotaku.com/pokemon-go-fest-is-having-a-rough-start-1797156301

First reported by Game Informer, the game is apparently “unplayable” for many at the event. For people who flew in from out of state, or even out of the country, these issues really suck—they paid a lot of money just to get connection errors. John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, got on a stage at the festival to address these concerns, only to get booed by the crowd. People seem pissed.

The central idea of this event is that folks at Grant Park complete timed challenges alongside folks around the world, but if players can’t even get the game to work, what is the likelihood we’ll meet the requirements to unlock a legendary later today?

What a seemingly ill-conceived event. Server error me if old.

When they announced that GoFest was going to be a worldwide challenge event where everyone must catch Pokémon at a specific time of day, I thought to myself "Maybe it's not a good idea to encourage everyone in the world to log in at the same time".

I'm sort of surprised how pack this is.

Surprise! I imagine this is the same feeling I had on the first day when I walked for miles and got nothing because of the server issues X 1000

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I didn't realize this is what they meant when referring to this event as legendary.

The whole idea of this event is also very inviting for DDOS trollers.
Edit:
Meanwhile in the Chester event:

Can't believe Niantic still haven't sorted out this type of issues. Totally understandable for people booed the CEO, especially if some of them are from overstates or from other countries holy cow! I sure would be pissed if I was on their shoes.

I dunno why the Pokemon Company has not had a word with them yet, this is one of the Pokemon Ip's worst mishandlings ever.

They had a fucking huge lasting thing on their hands but ruined it last year too with mismanagement and way too late updates.

Is Pokemon Go the biggest missed opportunity...ever?

Yeah, and it's pretty depressing. It was huge, but it could have kept the momentum going if things were handled better. Something like Pokemon Go rarely happens and they squandered its potential.

The thing I don't get is why Pokemon trading and fighting were not a thing. They could have copied a light version of the formula from the handheld games and it would have been better than what we got.

You'd think that after last year's massive launch problems they'd hire a person or two with an understanding of basic networking infrastructure. You know, someone who'd tell them that making all players all around the WORLD log in at the same time might be a bad idea.

Is trading actually in yet lol? Should have been there like 3 quarters/seasons ago:p
Same for fighting/pvp.

The merchandise industry grew in 2016 due to Pokemon. Guess.

Just because it was a success doesn't mean that it wasn't a missed opportunity. The game could've had longevity, but now it's just diehards who still play it. Last summer, everyone was playing it.

Yup sounds like he's having fun lol

Server issues aside, I wonder if they had hired phone companies to put up temporary cell towers, if not I don't know how they expected this to work. Even if they offered free wifi the amount of people there would still overwhelm the local cell networks.

This is astute

What was a legit worldwide phenomenon for a brief period of time and changed the way we socially interacted with strangers

has become this

man, they were in over their heads. They needed billions to support what they had tapped into, and it will be nowhere near as successful as it could have been.

I'm still shocked the Pokemon company decided to go with a small mobile devolper to make and handle a game and franchise of this magnitude. Like what did they think was gonna happen? It's freaking Pokemon!

They could save this by staging a Team Rocket invasion, and blame them for the connection issues...

...MAYBE THATS THE ACTUAL PLAN.
