Yup. I was on Facebook and saw someone I know arguing wih a gay black guy about how this whole thing is no different from people gathering for pride.

I just cant with these people. There isnt much else to say besides fuck off or fuck you.

As you should. They're 25% of voters and far less of citizens as a whole.

They're not who the fight is against or the messenging should be geared towards. They're a lost cause, and you don't give them daylight by acting again them in violence. You use their violence and hatred to delegitimize their rhetoric.

King understood that very much, while also being critical of the middle both sides nonsense. His tactic was influence the middle by forcing them to not be able to look away from the atrocities committed by white nationalists. And change came because of it, and then only after self sacrifice.

Give me a break. Such an event could never happen today, and you know it.
Took the nazi's 20 years to gain power and move on to the actual war and Holocaust. "Give me a break" was the reaction from normal people back then too.

Do I believe we are quickly heading to mass murder? No. But we still should to everything we can to put down these hateful ideologies as quick as possible.

Every member of every gathering is too broad, but to be more specific, every member with nazi memorabilia, yes. Especially if things keep escalating the way things are now. If we had a competent government that arrested any of these people and put them away for a long time then that would be different. Violence wouldn't be necessary in that case. Maybe if they saw consequences for their actions they might change but right now there aren't any. At least not on a lawful level. Of course I don't want violence to be the answer but with the way things are going it keeps looking more and more like it may be the only one.

Discounting our current government's stance on matters, what would your answer be?

Advocating murder is ridiculous. Completely ridiculous.

What should be done is what's being done. Drown these idiots out. Overwhelm them with words and actions that are the very opposite of their hate speech. Their violence is despicable and doesn't work. Neither would ours. Defend yourself if physically attacked. Don't physically attack.

These people have always been here and unfortunately always will be. The violence and killing of WWII didn't eradicate the idea or purge from human beings the base emotions and fears that lead to prejudice and hate, just the government and the army that gave those ideas and that hate power.

This isn't saying "just wait." That implies arguing against another solution that would be quicker. The argument is that that other solution isn't quicker and would just make things worse.

It just seems strange to me that folks are willing to accept that we can't just kill our way to a world without radical religious violence. Why would it be different here?

Forcing the other side to defend the extreme form of their position before one can accept their actual, less extreme ideology is the death of discourse.

But reducing an anti-violence perspective to nazi-sympathizer is ok?

WWII has been the example cited. We didn't punch nazis in WWII.

And what you'll more immediately see is continued voter suppression so they their power is preserved as much as possible. That's well in progress.

From there it will progress to denial of services and imprisonment at least. On this current path, I can see that within 10 years.

Do I believe we are quickly heading to mass murder?

I do. Fuck that. My parents were born in North Carolina in 1940 and 41. They had first hand experience with the Klan. I'm not taking them as anything else other than deadly serious.

Because at the end of the day they are playing a long game to set the conditions to implement their ideology and it just so happens that ideology includes murdering wife and child and making me watch. So that, when mofos tell you and show you point blank what they about you a fool to not believe them.

Bumped up my monthly donation to the SPLC. Calls in to my Senators and local Rep. Time to start looking for local anti-hate groups to join, I guess.

To quote Existential Comics:

"Middle class, white liberals who think "rational debate" will solve everything forget that sometimes we have genuine enemies. With real enemies you can't resolve things by giving them a platform, engaging in discourse, or understanding them. You fight against them."

I'll add to this that people must realize that neonazis do not have legitimacy, you cannot engage in politics with them, they are not legitimate adversaries that you can engage in political disagreement and exist with them. They must be met with antagonism not agonism.

The discussion over punching nazis is one we've had about a hundred times now. No one is convincing anyone.

This thread is about a very real terrorist attack by a white supremacist, not about people's fantasies or even plans to punch supposed nazis.

If you have something to post about the topic -- some news would be great -- then feel free to do so, but we're done with the discussion of nazi punching. I'm sure it will come up again, and we'll send another twenty pages having the same argument, but for now, put it to bed.

I agree but what you are saying is different than saying grab your gun and shoot the next nazi you see, which some are jumping to

If somebody wants to take the fight to Nazis Im not sitting on a fucking high horse telling them not to do it because "MLK didnt..."
He didnt throw Stokley Carmichael and Malcolm X under the bus because he understood non violence was a tactic that others wouldnt agree with. So dont you dare try to insinuate that people who choose not to adopt nonviolence as a tactic are sacrificing the moral high road.

While obviously no one should be going out to actually murder these Nazis in the street there should be a concerted effort to make their lives a living hell.

Out them publicly, expose their schools, employers, business partners, associates. Picket their residences. Petition other countries with hate speech laws to prohibit them entry - that would ban them from almost all of Europe, you know the place where their "heritage" comes from.

Ironic that we should be looking at Germany for guidance on how to deal with these Nazi and hate mongering rallies.

Germany, the birthplace of Nazism has done one heck of a job at preventing the insurrection of this hateful ideology by making it a criminal offense to display symbols associated with nazism and white supremacy.

Germany is the shining beacon of how to actually combat Nazism effectively. Amazing turnaround that other countries should learn from.

That was awesome. Makes me feel a teeny bit better about being an american right now.

There are millions of amazing people living in this country. Those people and the values they uphold will always be worth fighting for. I try to remind myself of that whenever I get down about the future.

Core challenge right there: people instilling their bigotry into their children. It's a challenge everywhere and breaking the chain of hate from one generation to the next is extremely difficult yet needs to happen to gain true progress in reducing percentage of racists.

It has been my experience that many people reproduce just to replicate their belief systems in other humans.

Those people are the problem.
