I have noticed a lot of my friends and family that would say things like Trump will be good for this country are now sort of on their back foot when talking about him.

Like if push came to shove, they would probably say that they support him, but it is much more qualified than it was in the past. Like, they are mostly doing so because they don’t want to admit they were wrong.

IMO, his approval ratings may be sort of artificially high because of this. He’s been in the mid thirties for a while, but I’ve notices this rhetorical shift more recently, like mostly since September or August.

Same.

I’ve yet to meet a supporter at this point that doesn’t have some hesitation admitting they were for him/still for him, including people that were all for during election. Some have turned coat completely.

I think Nate Silver said we were seeing this a while back.

Basically a good deal of Trump’s support is moving from hard support (“Trump is great, fuck you!”) to soft support (“well, he’s ok, I guess, better than Hillary?”) whereas the disapproval is hardening. His movement is downward with every group, there’s not a significant amount of people who previously disapproved of him but have been won over.

Not making any new friends, losing the ones he’s already got. Sounds like Trump.

Kinda weird. In my neck of the woods (Wisconsin) I actually saw a lot of the reverse. During the election it was all "Trump is better than Hillary, so I have no choice," but now it's full-throated defense of absolutely fucking everything the guy does no matter what. Like they made their choice and now cannot waiver even a little. In fact I can't actually think of someone I know that's got softer on support rather than harder.

I feel like there’s a difference between pre-election and post-election attitudes. A lot of people viewed supporting Trump as a social faux pas, so they couched their support as the lesser of two evils etc etc. But now he won, so they feel empowered being on the winning team.

I’m guessing those people were always behind him 100% and were too embarrassed to admit it.

I remember when Republicans started expressing disappointment in Bush during his second term. The way you knew it was really bad for him was once they started denying they had ever supported him in the first place. Suddenly they started coming out of the woodwork to say they knew all along he wasn't a real conservative. Never mind that Republicans loved him until the point at which even they could no longer deny his incompetence.

My dad openly called Trump a fucking moron and a democratic plant leading up to the election. Had to vote for him because he's better than Hillary (and because Pence...). Now? Not a single word against him ever. Not even a little. Unwaivering support for everything and criticism of the other side at every opportunity no matter what.

Yeah I remember my cousin in 09/10 complaining about Obama and remarking “well McCain sucked too!” Oh gee, I bet you really thought that going into the polling booth.

The losers always suck and are dumb and it’s entirely their fault. I don’t think this is even a partisan thing, like who is honestly going to say Richard Nixon was a better choice (or at least more honest and respectable) than McGovern or Humphrey? Or that Bush was better than Kerry or Gore? Sure, you can contextualize those wins historically, but those presidential losers are still viewed in retrospect with mockery and derision. Can’t just be that the American people were fooled by charisma (Bush) and race-baiting scare tactics (Nixon).

That’s because your dad thought he was going to lose. Trump was every Republican’s dream candidate, they just thought he was unelectable (and didn’t want to admit that it was due to being so right-wing and racist). To be fair, so did I.

The twitter feed is a complete mess. It's the twitter version of a spectacularly awful powerpoint presentation. The person running it doesn't understand how to use twitter, is treating the company twitter account like it's a personal one, and doesn't understand how much they don't understand about how they're handling the screw up and the follow up.

A lot of the media is kowtowing for continued access. Take a stand and do your jobs. Never in my years at home growing up did my parents say I misrepresented something. Something is either truth or it isn't truth. Anything that wasn't the truth was a lie. Full Stop, they are treating adults as fucking kids. I hate this.

For many of them, it's not even about kowtowing for access, it's deliberately not holding both sides to the same standards. (Jamelle Bouie's point that Journalism is a very "white" industry is an important one.)
